My name is Mark Portman. I am currently living in New Jersey. I was born, am currently alive, and, eventually, will die. For now, as I wait patiently for death, I will write and publish my work to help pass the time.
I don't want to talk about myself too much here. I would much rather convey my life story and certain aspects of my personality through fictionalized accounts which I wish to publish on this website. I don't want to give away too much information about myself in a short biography section at the risk of revealing plot spoilers regarding my work; however, I would like to share some facts about myself which I do not believe will later come back to spoil my work.
I enjoy music very much; I play bass guitar and I love to learn new songs to play and write basslines. My favorite artists are Nirvana, R.E.M. , the Clash and Foo Fighters; however, this is not the limit of my taste, and I enjoy plenty of pop and rap music to balance out my alternative rock leanings. I also like films, and love to watch and review them; my favorite movies include "Pulp Fiction," "Casablanca" and "American Beauty." In all likelihood the majority of my compositions which I will upload will be reviews of films I have seen. I also enjoy making short films, but my productions are few and far between. I also enjoy television, but I feel that I watch considerably fewer programs than other Americans; the only shows that I watch on a regular basis are "Lost," "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "Scrubs." Otherwise, I prefer to watch films on TV rather than programming.
My favorite authors include George Orwell, Kurt Vonnegut and Ernest Hemingway. I also enjoy the works of J.D. Salinger, Chuck Palahniuk, Ray Bradbury and John Steinbeck. Out of the aforementioned authors, I would describe my writing style as being closest to Orwell's, and my themes more aligned with Palahniuk and Vonnegut.
I am an atheist and a former Roman Catholic. I am also a very liberal Democrat, and I am the most actively political person I know. I have nothing against conservative politics and Republicans; I was just raised liberal and identify with the liberal argument much more than the opposite. Most of my friends are conservative Republicans and I've grown used to being the black sheep in the group; I prefer to think of myself as a member who provides political balance in an otherwise right-wing think tank.
I hate Wal-Mart, people who claim to like a rock band but only know of one song by the artist, and commercials for the Olive Garden, McDonald's and Alltel Wireless. I also detest the bands Lynyrd Skynyrd, Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco. I have nothing personal against the band members themselves, and I do believe that if I met them that I would more than likely enjoy their company and possibly grow to become friends with them, but as far as their music is concerned, I have no tolerance for it.
I can honestly state right now that this short bio of myself is not written in my typical writing style. Most of the time I inject much more humor into my work, as well as references to popular culture and much more profanity. I try to keep my works as tasteful as possible, but I do dabble in depraved subject matter and terminology freqeuntly in order to convey a specific mood for my piece. I also tend to write long, drawn-out passages; I understand that writing in such a style may make me come across as pretentious, but I find the joy of writing lies in the reading, not the information that it provies; if it's straight-up information you want, go watch the television (although I cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information you are presented). If you want information coupled with pleasant language, read my work.
So that's it about me. I'd love to share more with you, and I will someday through my writing. For now, we are only acquaintances, but hopefull, we will grow to become good friends.
Have a nice day or evening, depending on when you are reading this, if you are reading this.
