~ Prologue ~

I remember the first time I saw him.

It was a cold day, and I was sitting alone at a table in Maydeen's Cookery. My shoulders were hunched over and my faded black track pants and my old plain blue tee shirt were not helping with keeping me warm. I only looked up briefly, realising myself from my quiet contemplation, but it was long enough to see him walk in behind somebody who appeared to be his Pa. He looked back at me and smiled.

I could tell he was different. His blue eyes showed no fear, and his brown hair was all over the place, unlike the clean-cut men who were raised in the pathetic little town I was born into called Port Hayde.

He was also friendly, his smile warm and comforting. He didn't appear to be cold and shallow, like every other person I'd grown up with. He walked up to me almost immediately, still smiling.

"Hi," he said. "I'm Limmion. I'm new here, and that over there is my dad."

"Hey," I replied. "I'm Edurice, and I'm definitely not new here. Where'd you come to Port Hayde from, Yellowstone?" I asked.

"No, my dad and I moved here from Lasken." He said.

I almost burst out laughing. "Lasken? Seriously? You've got to be joking. Isn't Lasken "the big city" or whatever? Why would your Pa do something like that?"

"Because my dad's an idiot." He replied.

"Of course," I said.

"Well, fair Edurice, would you like to accompany me and get some milkshakes? I would appreciate the company, since I don't actually know anybody."

"Sure, and I'm sure that I can get Maydeen to give then to us for free, she's my Ma's best friend."

"Good," Limmion replied. "Because I'm completely broke."

I turned back to him. "Same here." I said, smiling.

And who thought all of my troubles would begin with just a milkshake with a friend? My name is Edurice Lakelan, I'm 14, and one day, I could end the world. If only I could keep my mouth shut, if only I could just completely zone out from the world and really be my own person.

Who would have thought that my best friend, Limmion, could also have the answer to all of my problems?
