"Chelise! Wake up!"
While opening her soare eyes she takes a huge breath and sees a man beside her, shaking her shoulders trying to wake her up.
"Great! You're awake! We must hurry, there's not much time."
Her head feels heavy. How did she get here? Who is this man?
She sits up and looks around, she seems to be in a room with things she's never seen before. Machines that doesn't look familiar at all is connected to a water filled tube. She notices that she's wet.
"Was I in there? She asks the man.
He nods and gives her some casual clothes.
"We must hurry Chelise, we don't have much time. They'll be here any minute."
"They? Who are they? And who are you?"
"I'll explain when we're out of here."
Chelise puts on the clothes with the man turned the other way.
"All right, follow me!"
He walks towards the door, presses a few times on the side of the wall and a door opens. What kind of door is that? How did it open?
The man leans out and checks both sides.
"It's clear, let's go."
It's a cramped corridor with those strange doors everywhere and a few people are lying unconcious along the way. The next door is opened the same way as the first one but this one leads to a staircase.
Her body feels weak. How long was she asleep? With her throat dry and stomach aching she hangs on to the rail while climbing the stairs.
"Just a little further and we're out in the open. We've got a helicopter waiting for us up above."
"A helicopter? What's that?" She has no clue as to what it may be.
"Oh, it's a flying machine that will take us to land."
"A flying machine? I've never heard of something like that."
"Yeah.. You'll see."
An unfamiliar loud noise is reaching her ears when nearing the top of the stairs. Opening the door they walk out into open air. It's dark outside and she notices something that looks like a big insect in the distance.
"Oh shit, let's hurry! We've got company!"
He grabs her hand and starts to run toward the insect lookalike. Having a hard time to keep up she falls over.
"Are you okay?" He helps her up and makes a few hand movements.
A few people come out of the insect and scatter around it. Two of them run over to help out. Taking hold of each one of her arms they continue to run.
In the air she sees a few things that may be helicopters. Which means that the insect lookalike is also a helicopter.
The people that surrounded the helicopter yells something, followed by a strong light which makes her close her eyes. It feels like they haven't been used in a while.
Noises followed by explosions reaches her ears before she can open her eyes again.
"Come on! Let's get off this boat."
They lift her up and lays her down on a blanket inside the helicopter while it starts to move. Looking to the side she sees how they take off from the ground. She's surrounded by people wearing black uniforms.
"I'm Jake." He says and offers her a container with water.
Taking the first sip makes her choke and cough a little. But eventually she finishes the whole bottle. Making her throat and stomach feel a little bit better.
"It seems like we're ok now. I bet you have alot of questions, but try to rest up a little during the trip."
Even though she only opened her eyes a few minutes ago it's hard to keep them open. A few moments later she falls asleep.
"Master Farn! We've lost the Ancient!"
"THEY GOT AWAY!?"
"I'm sorry Master! Our troops didn't stand a chance."
"ARE YOU JOKING WITH ME!? HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN!?"
Farn slams his fist through a table, breaking it apart. He's never been this angry.
"Your orders Sir!" Says the other man nervously.
Farn looks up and sighs heavily. This wasn't supposed to happen. How did they know we were moving that woman.
"Mmm... Track that helicopter from a distance. Don't let it dissappear." He says with a glare that is dead serious.
Chelise wakes up and opens her eyes, she's in some sort of bed. Looking around it's clear she's not in the helicopter anymore. Instead she's in a room that consists of some light sources, a table, some chairs and something black on the wall in front of her. She can hear voices outside but it's spoken in a language she doesn't understand.
A few seconds later someone knocks on the door. It opens and a woman enters the room. She's wearing a black suit with a skirt and some high heeled shoes. She's got black hair and glasses and carries a notebook with her.
"Good morning Chelise, I'm Haruhi Tanaka. You can call me Haru if you'd like."
Chelise doesn't say anything while Haru walks in and sits down at the table and puts her notebook down.
"Did you sleep well Chel?"
Chel?... Is that supposed to be her nickname now?
She nods and gets up from the bed followed by a big yawn and a stretch. She sits down at the table on the opposite side from Haru.
"I'm from the Keepers. We're a large group with worldwide contacts and this is our facility. We found out that they were transferring you to a base in China. So we took our chance and freed you. Do you remember why you were there?"
Chelise takes a few moments to think things through. The keepers... She's never heard of them. And who are they? What was she doing there?
"I know my name is Chelise Winters. But that's all I can remember."
"I see. There ought to be some problems since you've been in a state of coma for about fourhundred years."
"Fourhundred years!? How is that even possible? I should be dead!" Chel is shocked, surely Haru's joking?
"Hmm... With your memory gone we need to go through a few things. It's true you've been in a coma for fourhundred years. But you're an Ancient."
"Yes, a human who's gained partial immortality."
Chelise can't believe what she's hearing. Ancient? Partial immortality?
"Are you joking with me?"
"It's not a joke. We've gone through alot to free you from the Guardians."
"They are a worldwide organization of magicians. Since they started their operations a few hundred years ago they have risen up to the position of guiding and protecting the world."
"Yes, you're a magician too Chel."
"Yes, but you've become an Ancient. At least that's what we call it."
"So what exactly is an Ancient?"
"You're the only one we know of that's become an Ancient. I don't know how the name came to be and no one knows how you did it. We don't know alot about Ancients, we only know what's been said and written. An Ancient doesn't seem to age, while no one knows if you can be killed by physical means. That's why they kept you alive, to find out more about how and what an Ancient is. It must be alot for you to take in. Are you hungry?"
"Breakfast is served in the dining hall. I'll show you the way."
They exit the room and walk left, following a long corridor that leads straight to a huge open room. There's people everywhere in there and they all stop to look at Chelise. Some bowing and others just nodding.
"You're quite popular here Chel."
"Why would I be popular?"
"Haha, of course you wouldn't know. But you're a celebrity in every magicians eyes."
"For being an Ancient?"
"Yes, but you've also earned another reputation along the way."
"You'll understand soon enough. For the time being we just want you to be accustumed to the life here. You've got alot to learn and it might take a long time before your memory returns. If it ever will."
"It might never return?"
"We just don't know at the moment. But your body is as healthy as ever. So there's not any physical means after all these years."
"That's good news."
"Haha, it surely is. This large room is connected to all facilities in this building. I'll give you a tour after you've eaten and taken a shower."
While walking through this large room Chelise notices that there's at least eight corridors along the rooms walls. The one they came out of included. There's also a staircase in the middle of the room. There's signs over the corridors although she can't read it. There's also a few coloured lines along the floor. To get back into what might be her room she just needs to follow the blue one.
They walk through another corridor which leads to another large room which must be the dining hall. There are alot of long tables in here with seats everywhere. It could easily fit a few hundred people, right now it's not even half full.
She notices that all the chatter and voices starts to fade away and they're all looking at her. Pointing at her and whispering among themselves. It might even be true... Is she really an Ancient?
Haru leads them to a long table where the food is layed out.
"Just grab a plate and pick whatever you'd like. It's free of charge for residents and employees."
"There's so much!"
Chelise cruises around the table trying to decide what to eat. Having a hard time to choose she decides to take a little of everything. Bread, some kind of hard things that looks like compressed bread, eggs, bacon, milk, thicker milk and all sorts of vegetables and fruits.
Haru has long finished choosing her breakfast before Chelise is ready. They walk over to a corner of a free table and sits down. Chelise is hungry, really hungry. She ends up finishing the whole plate even though some of the things didn't taste that good.
"It's really been fourhundred years?"
"That is correct."
"That's why there's so much I don't recognize?"
"What do you mean?"
"These doors... How do they work?" she asks with a serious face.
"Pff..." she lets out while having trouble not to laugh.
"I'm serious! And what's with this light? Where's the fires? And what are these chairs made of? It's so stiff!"
"There's been alot of discoveries during the time you've been gone. You will learn it all during your education." Haru says while trying to keep a straight face.
"That's right, we're putting together a course for you so you can catch up with everything that's happened in the world. You will also learn the Japanese language since we're in Japan."
"That'd be great! When does it start?"
"As soon as you feel ready."
"Tomorrow? I'm feeling great!"
"Haha, you sure got energetic as soon as you got to eat. Come, I'll lead you to the shower room."
They walk back along the way they came from. Passing the huge room once again, walking through the corridor where the room Chelise was sleeping in. In this corridor there's twenty rooms, ten on each side. At the end of it is the shower room.
"Here it is, take your time. I'll bring you a change of clothes."
"Thank you Haru. By the way, what's a shower?"
"Oh... Uhm... Might as well get you started."
They enter the door which leads them into a room with another two doors in it. Haru explains that one door is for the men and the other one for the women. So they enter the womans shower room. It's empty at the moment. In there Chelise notices a mirror on the wall so she stops and looks at it. The person in the mirror has long blonde hair and green eyes.
"Is that me? Is that how I look?"
"Huh? Yes, that's you. Beautiful right?"
"I'm not sure, first time I see myself in fourhundred years appearantly."
"That's true." Says Haru while laughing.
Chelise takes a good look at herself in the mirror. Making some weird faces before she's satisfied.
"Ready for a shower?" Says a smiling Haru.
"Let's do it!"
