Chapter One: Paradox ~ Extraordinary Being
Burn Out
Chapter One: Paradox ~ Extraordinary Being
Trying to make my way home was never a battle. And I hope it won’t ever be a fight to the death ever again. The bus I took was normal as usual. Enjoying time away from our friend the blazing hot sun and avoiding the awkward eye contact with the crowd of people. I got off at Ruby St. and walked past the concreted green-less park like any other day. I never went through the park during the evening but was walking besides it any better? I always walked around where there was light though it really didn’t offer any help. I was almost home it was right there at the end of the block.
Then I got a this feeling. You know when your breathing got heavy and you could hear your own heart beating against your chest. You know you just have that feeling that something awful is gonna happen. I mean when that jogger ran past me it scared me a little but I just thought I was being silly, you know? Nothing really happens here...well to me anyways.
“ Tell me about incident that followed?” the police officer asked.
Well this voice just yelled hey and I turned around thinking someone was calling me like I dropped something. And it just happened it was quick and painless at first. I stepped back and looked down and there was this huge patch of blood that just got bigger and bigger. I could smell the iron and I just bolted and I yelled and yelled for help. This one man I saw him through the window of his house just watching. I could see his face looking at me me...all those unhelpful bastards saw me. Why didn’t they help? Then I heard the scariest sound possible. My foot hit the concrete like I had kicked it and I just collapsed. The rocks just dug into my hands.
“ Sorry” I took a break and the tears just started to roll down my face. This must be like how it felt talking to Oprah.
I tried getting up but I felt a sharp pain in my back. Soon I wasn’t even feeling the pain anymore I just started to cry. I just accepted it then I found myself turned around on my back crawling and sniveling. Pathetic right? In spite of that they walked up and just went crazy plunging and cleaving into me with blood just all over the concrete. It looked like abstract art on the ground and that laugh like if it was fun cutting me up.
“ I...I can’t believe I’m just noticing this” I looked at my arm stitched cuts all over my arm and I could feel a short one on my cheek to my jawline.
I felt the tears run down like a river. I cried without even making a sound I couldn’t scream for help anymore my throat was shut. The worst part was that I just laid there and took it. Then they stopped and walked away like my life was that insignificant. Everything got cold real fast and hazy and it hurt everything just hurt. All I wanted was my mother. I tried crawling home with burning wounds. Covered in dust, rocks and leaves. Just me and the sound of gravel. And I just kept on howling mom over and over in the dark. Eventually everything just disappeared.
“Did you see who did this” he asked with his eyes tearing up a bit.
“No they were wearing a hat” I said but that wasn’t true I knew it was a woman with hair that looked it had every texture in it. It was wild but it was actually beautiful but I’m not going to admit some beautiful haired woman almost killed me.
“ I promise you, we’ll find this guy.”
The officer walked of looking back and giving me a reassuring promising nod. And then the nurse happily walked in.
“How are you feeling William?”
“Well minus the pain pretty crappy.” I said like if she was asking a dumb question.
“I'm sorry about your misfortune but you’re very lucky to be alive”
“ Really? I wish I felt lucky. It just hurts so much”
“Well you rest up and don’t worry you’ll be better in no time I assure you. Your life is in good hands.” and she left just as happily as she entered. But before she left I thanked her and she smiled in return.
“ No problem” she said
I leaned back in my bed and started to relaxed. I closed my eyes and tried to forget the memories those were what hurt the most. And then my mother’s voice whispered my name and I opened my eyes.
“Mom.” I said holding back tears.
She practically sprinted to my bed and crushed me with her hug but I just ignored this current pain.
“Will.”
There was happiness in her eyes but her mouth quivered with sadness and she started to cry. I couldn’t hold it back any longer.
“Are you okay?”
“In pain but I’ll live.”
I laughed for the first time since the attack. It felt good but mt stitches felt like they were going to open.
“Will I’m glad you’re alive, I don’t know what I would do if you were gone.”
“ Mom, I wouldn’t leave you so easily”
“ I know you wouldn’t, you’re my strong man baby”
We both laughed I couldn’t be any happier. For an hour or two we talked about nothing really, basically anything that came up in our head. She told me about all the well wishes from the family and her co-workers and friends. We really did not have much to say but we wanted to enjoy each other’s company.
“Mom you didn't sleep did you? you should be resting”
“Yes but I had to see you.”
It broke my heart how innocently she said that. Like I was driving her away.
“Mom go home and rest I’m fine I am really”
She stood there thinking, I could see the bags under her eyes and how unkempt her hair looked, she probably didn’t go to work last night either.
“Ok Will, I’ll come again tomorrow, love you ”
“Love you too.”
I woke up not realizing I had fell asleep. It was night, you don’t know how terrifying a hospital can be at night, things making odd sounds and beeps, that one spot that looked like it was nothing but darkness. Strange shapes all around the room, in the day it was bright and happy looking but at night it looked so dark and awful. There was a dim lamp and the light that was able to come through the shades of the hallway. They s really didn’t do much to make the room brighter. I wish it was just brighter.
“ William”something said in the dark. The delicate but high voice came from the left towards the door. And like anyone else would do I took the sheet and covered my whole body.
“What are you doing?” the voice said with a confused tone and sounded even closer.
It pulled the sheet off of me. I kept my eyes closed but I could feel the hot breath and itchy hair on my face. I was greeted by a girl right on top of me. Our noses almost touching and her wide excited rust colored eyes stared right into mine.
“Why are you so red?” she said teasingly
“I’m not red it’s just that your hair is covering my face, maybe that's why?” My face was feeling like it was about to burst into flames but my remark wasn’t too far off. Her hair was like lava.
“Really, I think I would know the difference between skin and hair”
She jumped off of me into the chair besides my bed.
“ And you are?” I asked squinting my eyes at this pigtailed menace.
“ Sorry, Sometimes I get carried away. My name is Marianela but you can call me Mari. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
She had her legs crossed, hair flowing to her hips and small smile. She held out her hand and I hesitantly shook hands with this stranger. Her grip was strong but with that smile she seemed harmless. She didn’t look like any patient and wasn’t in any hospital clothing, and visiting hours were over a long time ago...so who was she?
“Ok and why are you here?”
I didn’t even want to know how she sneaked in without me noticing. She gave a long pause when I asked her.
“I need your help with something. Simple as that.”
“Nothing is simple in this world and you expect me to help you with this something? I don’t even know you? For all I know you could be some junkie in a hospital. ” I could hear the laughter in my voice. The whole thing was ridiculous.
“You know I’m beginning to notice nothing is simple in this world?” she looked around the room especially eyeing the things that blinked and beep.
“ I can’t deal with this nonsense. I’m calling the nurse”
Quietly I inched my hand toward the beeper. Keeping my eye on her but then a white light brightened the room. It wasn’t a light but a flame she held in her hand like some delicate item. She held it close ,barely showing me the small glow in her hand like it would spill over.It felt like the sun was beating down on me all of a sudden. And as crazy as it sounds I wanted a closer look. The white flame flickering in her hand was just impossible and unreal.
“Please stay back.” she said with the pure burning blaze in her now red hands. Then it died out and she flung her hands back. A grin found it's way on her sweaty face while she flailed her hands in pain.
“Fire is fire it doesn’t discriminate. Well now it’s obvious.”
“Yeah people don’t usually do that...ever ”
What in the world was she? How did she even do that? Not even Criss Angel could do what she did. But I wasn’t afraid. Calling this girl threatening would be like calling a kitten dangerous.I stayed quiet the thoughts in my head couldn’t make sense of it anymore. She beamed like a kid showing off and even though I wasn’t threaten by her there was an uneasiness I felt.
“Well let’s just say humans aren’t alone and many things are hidden away.”
I watched as her finger tapped the arm of the chair. It became faster and faster never letting up.
“What are you?”
“ Don’t be alarmed but I’m a devil.”
I stayed calm but the thoughts in my head panicked. What does that even mean. Devil as in the devil, the one in hell. I moved all the way to the edge of my bed.
“ S-so you want my soul or something”
“Please, we’re just called that because we live in Baratrum”
She tried reaching out to me but I watched her hand like it was a shark. Nothing made sense anymore this had to be a morphine filled dream. She could see the question mark on my face about the word Baratrum and the distrusting look.
“ To other beings like humans it’s also known as Former Hell.”
“ Interesting...verrry interesting” I avoided eye contact like it would kill me. Two fingers now did the taping on the chair and then she sprung up without warning.
“Please Will I need your help ”
She was pleading with me. What did she even want with me? Why am I asking myself these questions? All of this could not be real.
“Sure considering your a devil whatever that’s suppose to mean I’ll help you.”
“William I’m begging you. Please I saved you your life.” she said pleading with me.
Now that I actually thought about it how did she even know my name? It all just disgusted me. My jaw clenched and my fist tightened, if she really did help me I was grateful but using it was just dirty.
“ Blackmail is just dirty but that would be what I expected from the devil.”
She sighed and looked like she just gave up. At this point I concluded this was definitely a morphine filled trip and I was speaking with my subconscious who took the form of a girl. I made this idea make sense.
“ I hope you can forgive me. I want to leave your life just as much as you want me out”
“ Sure subconscious ”.
All of a sudden my head felt like it was spinning. I was slipping in and out of sleep. Everything seemed to explode away from me and I felt like I was falling a million miles. My eyes were like a camera lens trying to focus blurring in and out. Then just instant darkness, I think I hit the bottom too.
