Chapter 2

Badger was always out looking for girls, he needed round the clock watching, and he was definitely trying to make my life hard. Yet there was something about this girl that he had that gave me hope. She walked tall and proud, yet she was the lowest of the low, a lonely girl. I knew by the panic she flew into about hearing about the school that this was her first time, yet normally girls start getting taken to The School the moment they start menstruating, how did she manage to keep hidden all this time? I had a feeling she wouldn't tell me if I persisted, but would if I showed her she could trust me, that obviously meant a lot. It also helped me a lot that he told her his plan, it's easier to stop if I know what's going on.

She glanced back to see if I was following her with a questioning look on her face, but I didn't know what she meant, I needed to talk to her if was to help her, we needed a plan.

So, quietly as I could I crept up on her, yet she managed to hear me and turned round quickly. Smiling at her gently, trying to tell I wanted to help I fell into pace with her, that way her footsteps were covering mine, though she didn't seem to make any at all, how I have no idea.

She let me fall into pace with her without speeding up or slowing down, showing she was willing to trust me, until I took her hand. She jumped away, abruptly and gave me a killing glare. At The School they teach us mind communication, with skin contact no one can over hear our conversation, it was the easiest way to plan an escape but I needed skin contact, and judging by her reaction beforehand that was not going to be easy. I reached out again, just to show her my hand, and then slowly laid it on her shoulder, she looked uncomfortable but she didn't shy away completely and that was a start.

Hello?I whispered to her mind, not really expecting an answer, you have to learn to do that. Yet she answered

"Yes?"

Surprised I almost took my hand off and broke the contact. Smiling at the fact that she could mind communicate I answered Hi, I'm Otter It felt like the right thing to say

"Hi" she answered "I know you're Otter"

Yet she didn't tell me her name, leading to the idea that she didn't trust me fully yet, but that came as no surprise to me.

I want to help you out I told her slowly.

"Thank you, what would you suggest, you would know The School better than me"

I was impressed with her formality, she spoke well, and considering girls weren't schooled it was impressive. I don't know how to stop him while he has claim, but the moment he leaves you I promise I will claim and look after you for that was the best I could do for her.

"Thank you" she replied "do you know if running away from Badger counts as a lost claim?" she asked.

Impressed by her question I told the truthfully I don't know, no girl has even attempted that yet I told her.

"Thank you" she repeated "do you know if you can show me a map or vision of The School so if I do run I can know where I am going?"

Again I was impressed, this girl had guts and wasn't afraid to use them, I truthfully didn't know that I could give her the vision of The School yet I wanted to see if she actually would make a break for it so I projected the map of The School to her.Thank you?

I beat her to say that, as a joke and her grin told me I did well

"Yes" she said "Thank you"
