Finally, she was asleep. Brandon had been up for three nights in a row, with a crying baby girl. How was it possible to cry three nights in a row? When he knew for sure she was asleep, he stood up and tiptoed over to the bassinet.. He walked into the kitchen where his wife, Megan, waited for him with two glasses of wine. She smiled at him as she handed him a glass.
"Next time, you're taking care of her" Brandon said tiredly. Megan laughed and said, "Will see about that. You know she's a daddy's girl." Brandon leaned over and kissed her on the forehead. "Maybe, but I bet if you held her more, she would become a momma's girl."
Brandon replied as he poured another glass. Megan laughed and grabbed Brandon's hand. "You're a good daddy and don't let anybody tell you otherwise," Megan said as she walked towards the bedroom. They had just put on their night clothes and got in bed, when they heard Adriana squalling from across the hall.
Brandon sighed and impatiently stalked toward the hall. She looked so precious wrapped in her little pink blanket. Her bright blue eyes stared right back at her daddy. He gently picked her up out of the bassinet and cradled her in his arms. Finally Megan and him were happy. "Now, little girl, I love you to death but your daddy needs sleep," Brandon said smiling down at her little face.
She reached out her little hand and grabbed his finger. He sat back in the rocker and began humming to her "My Girl". Her little eyelids began drooping once more and finally she was asleep.
At last, Brandon went to bed at 5 am and didn't toss or turn at all. That morning, he had to be at work at 8 am and was running late. Megan sat in the living room breast-feeding Adriana and watching the news. "Honey, have you seen my purple tie? I can't find it anywhere," Brandon hollered from the bedroom.
However, Megan wasn't listening. In fact, she turned the volume up on the TV. "...this is a news alert. There has been a massive shooting in the Greendale community. Seventy people shot...Twelve dead...twenty-nine injured...twenty-nine missing" Megan dropped the remote and yelled for Brandon to come in there.
"What is it, Babe?" Brandon asked worriedly. As Megan burped Adriana she told him all about the news story. "How did we not know about this? We live in the same damn community!" Brandon said angrily.
Megan reached for her husband and said, "Honey, I don't know but please don't cuss in front of the baby." She picked up the remote and tuned in for the rest of the story:
"...the Greendale Police have warned the residents that the gunmen are still missing and that they are still armed. They want all the residents to keepall doors locked during day and night and only go outside if it's absolutely necessary..." Megan looked at her husband with fear in her eyes,
"What do we do Brandon?" He ran his hand through his jet-black hair and said, "I don't know Megan...I just don't know." And with that, he walked back into the bedroom and continued getting ready. But, Megan wasn't done with the discussion. She went and laid Adriana in her bassinet andstormed into the bedroom. "Brandon, are you not a bit concerned about Adriana's safety?"
He dropped his shoes onto the floor and raised up off the bed. "How could you even say that, Megan!? Of course, I'm concerned about her safety!" She took a step back and looked at her husband in disbelief.
"Brandon, I don't want you going to work right now. We need to stay home for atleast tonight." Megan said pleadingly. Brandon sighed and loosened his tie. "You're right" he began, "I'll call my secretary and tell her I'm taking a sick day."
He went over and wrapped his arms around Megan. "I'm sorry for yelling at you, Love, I just need you to understand that my life now revolves around the protection of my baby and you"
She sighed and replied, "I know, Brandon, I believe you." And with that, she left to check on the baby while he changed out of his work clothes.
