The clouds above them swirled. Jacob and Emily ran swiftly back into the house. Tornado sirens were blaring. They ran downstairs to the cellar where their dad hid. As they started to shut the door, Elisabeth, their babysitter appeared at the top of the stairway.

"Come on! You can move faster than that!" yelled their dad.

Liz jumped down as dad shut the door.

"What are you doing here?" Jake asked.

"I was driving when the sirens started up. I was close to here, so I decided to uh… visit while the tornado is passing by." Liz replied.

"It's touching down?" Em asked.

Liz looked into her fear-filled eyes. "Yes, it touched down about ten minutes ago about ten miles from here. It should be here soon."

A tiny, continuous tremor shook the ground lightly.

"How soon?" Jake asked, his excited face glowing in the candlelight.

"Within two minutes," Liz said. "But we should stay in five minutes after we can't hear it anymore."

"How do you know so much about tornadoes?" Dad asked.

"I've been in a few. Five or six."

"Wow, that's impressive!" Jake said.

The shaking had increased rapidly. It was now accompanied with a distant roaring sound.

Emily started crying, but Jake didn't blame her. This was their first real danger in life. The worst danger that they had experienced was their mom and dad fighting before they were divorced.

The candle fell off the table and started a fire on the carpet. Dad stomped it out then, got down on the ground with the rest of the group. The roaring became so loud that it felt like their ears were going to blow even though they were covered. The ground shook with such intensity that the table fell down onto Jake and Em.

The roaring soon ceased, and the shaking when away with it. Liz and Dad lifted pieces of the table off of the kids. Jake was unscratched, but Em was lying on the ground, her pants leg was ripped. Blood slowly trickled from a wound.

"We need to get her to the emergency room," Liz said. "Can I borrow your shirt Jake?"

"Uh... Sure, I guess." He pulled his shirt off and handed it to Liz. She grabbed it and ripped it in half. After rapping it around Emily's leg, Jake and Dad carried her out of the cellar.
