Twenty minutes of searching and Jason's run into a whole squad of the enemy's forces, poised to kill him on sight. He had to think quickly, mainly because he's being chased by a squad of soldiers, it reminded him of when he would run from the cops. They knew who he was but never were able to catch him. They were quick, but he was quicker. Thanks to the war, parkour free running with his friends hasn't ended up on his list of things to do in his free time. Jason hopes his old skills will kick in and get him the hell out of here.
Jason started running for the stair well again as piping hot bullets whizzed past his head and face. The cracks of their rifles would give his position away quickly, even worse is he didn't have any contact with his team. Jason bunny hopped of the rail and onto the stairs following a pattern to get him away from the enemy and hopefully to his team. They're getting awfully close to finding their mark with their shots, Jason could play connect the dots ending with his head. In the mean time that they were shooting at him, Jason is acting like an antelope being chased by a lion, moving quickly and diligently to avoid being killed. Then again, the prey can always become the predator. Light bulb, ding! This is going to be a little bright, so to speak.
Stopping at the bottom of the stairwell, Jason hid just underneath the base, getting ready to go on the offensive line. Their boots where clapping the stairs as they were coming down, here we go, Jason thought to himself. Just as they got to the bottom, Jason tossed a flash grenade and turned away quickly, covering his ears and eyes. The sound of the flash grenade was enough to get through to his ears, but not as bad as how bad it hit the enemy. They were blinded and temporarily deaf. Jason stepped out from behind the stairs and opened fire on the enemy, dropping all of them the way he could take out turkey while hunting out in the mountains of Tennessee on his grandfather's ranch. After he had taken out his pursuers, he felt like a knife was ripping through his heart. These people had family waiting for them when the war was over, now, they won't get see their loved ones again. But Jason had people he loved and wanted to see again too, but he's also still a kid.
Jason walked in the lobby, bodies were everywhere, and the water from the rain was stained red from the blood along with blood spatter on the wall. The iron smell of blood filled Jason's nostrils and made him want to run away, he knew there was nothing that could be done for his team now. As he walked around the completely demolished lobby, he spotted something that shined from the light of the moon through the clouds, luckily the rain had stopped and the faint sound of water drops from the crevices of the building left a lonely feeling on the city of Manhattan. Jason picked up the object and saw that Kayla had dropped the ring he had given to her 3 years ago from one of the jewelry stores. He had guessed she had dropped it leaving on the way to the rendezvous point. Jason knew the team was already there since there had only been one squad of soldiers where there would be three or four squads searching the building. He knew she probably wasn't taking it well.
Jason began walking to through the streets to get to the Upper East Side to regroup with his team, all of which would think he's dead. The night was cool and quiet, the battle must have settled down, Jason thought to himself as he walked along the side of the road, rifle ready in case of a nasty surprise by the enemy. The war had long since quieted since he was unconscious, the one thing that he hadn't heard in years: peace. Jason guessed the subdued city was only temporary, he knew this kind of peace won't last for forever considering the events of the years. He was amazed as he walked the dark streets, feeling safe, secured, and even most surprising, calm. Though he felt no danger around him, Jason stuck to the shadows where the full light of the white moon could not emanate its powerful light, he felt the need to stay out of sight and hopefully out of mind.
As Jason came upon the Upper East Side apartments, he savored his last moments of peace, because he knew this could be his last chance for peace for a long time. As Jason came back to his senses of war, he noticed where there were scouts posted to ensure the enemy doesn't get past unnoticed, only he could slip by the scouts without a single trace or sound. He snuck to the back of the building, rifle eager to spit its share of rounds. He picked the lock swiftly and moved inside making sure he wasn't followed. The power was out, Jason guessed an EMP had fried the building, otherwise it wouldn't have chilled him to the bone from the rain, the air was ice cold, enough to see your breath if your not careful. Everything was quiet, everyone might be asleep, but Jason guessed Kayla wasn't doing too well. He figured she was too emotionally disoriented to sleep after all she had been through for the day. The halls reeked loneliness and despair, even the need for a new paint job and remodeling after all it's been through. Jason clicked on his radio he had scavenged from one of his fallen victims of war and changed it to the right frequency for Kayla to pick up on her ear piece if she hadn't taken it out.
"Kayla, can you hear me?" Jason quietly asked, careful not to wake the buildings new temporary residents.
For about ten minutes, he had no reply, about to leave, her voice stopped him. "Jason, is that you? You're alive? I checked your pulse and you were gone and I though you were--"
"I'm fine, just tired. You have no idea how bad I've missed you. What room are you staying in? I would like to see you again."
She told him room 214 on the second floor,Jasonwent there, anxious to see her more than anything else in the world, the feeling was mutual between them. Jason headed up to her room and gently knocked on her door. The moment the door cracked open, he was pulled inside and embraced a tear-struck Kayla who could barely believe he was alive. They kissed and held each other for the sake of being reunited and the quality of being in each others arms once more. For the next few hours, they talked, kissed, cuddled, talked even more and embraced each other until they were both asleep. Though Kayla was already asleep long before Jason, she found herself wanting to more from the night but fell victim to the nights clutches of sleep and prosperity added on to him stroking her hair, Jason fell knowing he was safe to sleep by the side of the girl he loved, safe to dream once more, safe to sleep without the worry of being attacked. Jason had actually felt the night was trusting enough to bring him the candy land of dreaming the dreams he wished would come true. After all both of them had been through, the night was short lived his soul intertwined with hers, the feeling of security washed over both of them and swept them away on their dream carpets to reveal the peace of night once more. Neither could really ask for more from the night, they were each other's lullaby, cradling each other until they were gone in the night.
The sun's fiery fingertips stretched across the puffy sky, the world seemed to be at peace, tranquility washed over the city leaving a sensation of calmness, enough for a monk to meditate with no distractions. Jason could sense the feeling upon waking, for the first time in years, he actually felt safe. He swiftly crawled out of the bed and went to the window, opening the curtains, and came to amazement by the sight that lay in front of him. The fingertips of rose stretching across the vast blue sea above reveal a garden of cool fire accompanied by the brisk air of the morning. Kayla had awoke and walked to the window, locked in the amazement that Jason felt towards the beautiful sky, neither could remove their gaze for several minutes before Jason started singing an old song by Nickelback, "Don't Ever Let It End." Though the originally meaning of the song was not letting a relationship ending, his meaning was for the moment they were sharing. For several hours, they stood there, kissing and holding each other as the sun rose and their shadows grew long across the floor. 10 o'clock reached its peak and both of them were ready to fight the day together, feeling invincible. Everyone in their squad knew that nothing could destroy their love, they knew that's what kept them going in the war, though they are each others strength, they are each others weakness. Jason knew Kayla would function well without him because the same thing was true about him, he would break down before thinking of revenge, being the deadliest fuel of war.
When Jason's and Kayla's time came to a stop, Jason felt like giving his team a surprise, it will be like he came back from the dead, literally. While they were getting ready to leave, Kayla went to take a shower, leaving Jason alone cleaning his gun and checking his ammunition count. His clothes and gear had been spattered and drenched in blood from when they were attacked. He hoped that his clothes weren't stained from the blood, Jason was pretty sure that he didn't want a replay of the night before. Though he didn't want to remember anything at all, the vision and sounds of it burned itself into his mind, another memory of war that is to scar his mind.
Jason had stripped out of his gear and set it inside the washer, hoping it still worked, he didn't want to have to wait until the next rain. Kayla walked out of the bathroom, emitting the scent of cocoanut shampoo, filling Jason's nostrils with the sweet scent it had to hold. He knew he needed to shower, the only thing he had on for the moment was his cargo pants and a tank top which needed a severe amount of time in the washer along with him. He started a load of laundry for the both of them, then went to go shower. After the shower, he came out smelling like cocoanut as well along with old spice body wash, the kind that Kayla liked him using. Their load of laundry had finish around 1:30 and they began to put all their gear back on, feeling weighed down after the short time of being free of their stuff.
Readying his rifle, Jason asked, "Ready to bring me from the dead?"
"When am I not?" she replied, and together they walked out of their room, ready for the grief of the team to disperse.
Orlando was the first to look like he was seeing a ghost. "You're alive!"
For the next few hours, Jason was swarmed with praises for being alive, comments of being the walking dead, and something about owing someone a bowl of Kung Poi chicken. Since the day was calm, they had a little party, celebrating his return and for taking most of New York which had happened while he was unconscious. They scavenge what they could from refrigerators, cabinets and pantries from the apartments that surround them, having a good time for the first time in a while and feeling like everything was back to normal, though it wasn't. As the day continued on, things stayed calm so Jason decided to stay another night before heading out. They had a day to actually kick back and relax, people were hooking up and for the first time in the war, it seemed like high school had come back from the grave. People were cheering and having fun, someone found a stereo but kept it on low volume for safety purposes. No one was going to want to leave or even stop partying.
Jason stood up on a table and made an announcement, "Everyone! I'm glad to say that I'm not dead and that I get to spend another day with all of you, I don't think I could ask for better. Since this jacked up war started, none of us has had fun like this in years. I wish it hadn't started but at the same time I have quality of fighting beside the bravest people I know, I'm to have fought along side with you. I hope we win this war and we get everything back, though it won't be the same, we all will go down in history as those who fought for the well being of this nation. Win or lose, it's an honor to stand by you and fight. For the Freedom Fighters!"
"For the Freedom Fighters!" everyone cheered back at him and started partying again.
As the celebration went on, Jason noticed Kayla had gone outside. Following her, he knew she wanted to talk to him privately. As he walked outside, he saw her leaning up against the wall of the building, drinking a Dr. Pepper, her favorite drink. Jason walked over to her and leaned against the wall beside her, smiling and staring at the sunset, the beautiful ocean of fire. Jason looked over at her and found himself in a trance, the light made her skin an unbelievably dazzling complexion and her long dark hair glow like fire. Absolutely amazing, Jason thought to himself, captured by the beauty that stands right in front of him. She seemed to know what he was thinking and smiled.
"Once this war is over, things will change, the people here will be completely independent. Their parents will have missed the rest of most of their kids' childhoods, but it's only the beginning of a new era, one that starts off new love and bringing back old traditions," Jason said to her, piecing every word together.
"Well when it's over, what will happen about our friends? Do you think they'll just go home?" she replied, curiosity gleaming in her eyes.
"I doubt it, look around, our friends are finding someone that they didn't know they were attracted to. When this is over, a lot of them are going to start a new life with that one person they found here. When all of this is over, everyone will start new," he said motioning toward the scouts in their posts, laughing and talking, holding one another, and knowing that now they can feel complete.
Kayla looked into his eyes, radiating love, wonder, and happiness, and said, "What about us? What will we come too?"
Jason grabbed her waist with both hands and said before kissing her, "When this is over, the one thing that will happen is me getting on one and asking you to marry me. This war has bonded us closer than anything else in the world, and I'm happy to know that it would be you to be mine for all time."
They both knew they were meant for each other with every word that is said with every kiss and every time something happens , the other always worries that they have lost the their love. Jason and Kayla stood there in the sunlight for the remainder of the hour, talking, kissing and holding each other, not wanting to let go.
Kayla looked at him with soft eyes and said, "I'm going to the room, come with me, I want to settle down and relax. I want to cuddle with you for the night."
"Here in a bit, I got reports that a lone gunman walking the streets from enemy radio chatter. I'm going to take a team here in a bit and find out who it is because who ever it is we need, the gunman took out two enemy squads, a tank, temporarily jammed their radars to get past their sensors, and fried some of their electrical equipment," Jason told her.
"What am I supposed to do?" she asked.
"I need you to take command here and make sure that if any enemy forces cross this area, take prisoners. I have an idea on how we can get extra help."
After Jason said that, Kayla kissed him and said, "Be safe, I love you."
"I love you too," Jason said, feeling a pang of regret for not staying to be with her for the time being.
Jason and his team were moving swiftly through the streets, careful not to get caught off guard. The guy they were looking for was good, and he didn't want to get on this guys bad side otherwise things could go horribly wrong. They got up to 34th avenue and held position, movement was detected 50 yards ahead. Jason signaled what he called the "pack attack", where they are the wolves surrounding the rabbit, but in this situation, the rabbit is a kick ass fighter.
Where movement was detected a figure was walking, rifle in hand and a stock load of equipment. Everyone moved into position and waited for the prey to enter they trap. 20 yards, 10 yards, 5 yards, and the gunman walked right in.
"Now!" Jason yelled to his team and then at the gunman. "Get on the ground! Drop your weapon and put your hands up!"
Surprisingly, the gunman cooperated. His rifle was on the ground and hands were in the air. Just as one of Jason's team members grabbed the gunman's wrist, hell was unleashed with fighting technique on an unorthodox scale. Jason knew only one person other than him who knew that kind of technique. When the gunman attacked his team, within 20 seconds of the fight, half his team was on the ground.
"Stop!" Jason ordered, staring at the gunman.
There was a quiet stand off between him and Jason before the gunman made his move, spinning round house. Jason weaved and countered with a low kick to the back of the knee, bringing his opponent to his knee. Jason threw a punch, which was weaved and Jason was kicked in the ribs, falling to the ground but recovering quickly and stood up with his chest at the end of the barrel of an M4, civilian grade.
"All this time and you still can't take me down, Jason," the gunman said.
"I've gotten better, Nathan. By the way, it's not nice to bring down my team like that," Jason replied.
"I see you used the pack attack strategy, you already know I made that strategy."
Jason glared at him and said, "I used to kick your ass in paintball all the time even when you did use that strategy. Looks like you've improved way more than me."
"Shut up, punk. Now where are you staying? I need a place to stay since I left the village in Toronto. Where's Kayla?"
We started walking back to the apartment complex when Jason said, "we stay in the Upper East Side apartments, there's plenty of places to stay. And Kayla's in command at the complex, oh, and don't do anything stupid when we get there. I'm sure you don't want to get shot for being a dumbass like you usually."
They walked back in silence and vigilance because of the reports of Delta and Bravo being there. Jason was careful of how his brother liked to be stupid and pull pranks at the most unreasonable times. Jason was thankful that the walk was only ten minutes or Nathan would've come up with something. When they reached the complex, Jason gave Nathan a list of which rooms were units were available for use, and then went to his room.
Jason walked into his room and saw Kayla sitting a chair, cleaning her pistol. He hoped he hadn't missed his chance to cuddle with her, otherwise he would have to do the dares she always made him do if he was late or missed something important. Usually they were fun to him but some were a little over rated.
"Am I late?" he asked, hoping not to have missed anything.
"No I figured you would be back around this time," she said getting up and smiling.
Kayla walked over to Jason, kissed him and walked over to the bed to lie down, Jason followed and laid down next to her. Kayla used him as the girl's favorite pillow, just as he hoped, they were together again with no current worries. For hours, the couple talked, asking each other questions, the occasional sweet kiss would come along. The couple was enjoying themselves in the dim light of the moon through the window, holding each other close and making the best of the night.
After about 3 hours, Kayla asked, "So who was the guy you brought in?"
"Surprisingly, my brother. I wasn't expecting to see him, he somehow got away from a village in Quebec. I don't know how, but he was kicking ass all the way here. He heard we were here and came looking for us, taking out scores of enemy soldiers on his here," Jason said, looking back at how Nathan beat the chizz out of his team.
"So what about the two teams sent here? What are we going to do about them?" Kayla asked.
Jason looked at her and said, "I hope I can get them on our side. If that works, then we would have to broadcast a nation wide radio call to use the same tactic, which would make our forces twice as strong, and even larger than before. Plus, if my dad is fighting in this, he'll get the message and join the cause, along with your dad. I know how much you miss him. I just hope that when we get the call that this works."
"Me too, if this doesn't work, then it's hightail out and hope we can stay alive long enough to see New Years. And if it does work, you do realize Barkley could kill our families," Kayla said, adding her point in the plan.
Jason stared at the ceiling and said, "If he does kill our families, he's only going to give us more fuel to fight. I'm sure he's smarter than to do that, but if you start thinking like a psychopath, once we cross the border and invade Quebec, he'll execute each and every one of our family members to bring us down and make us weak which would make it easier for those who are still loyal to him to kill us without a problem."
Kayla kissed him on the cheek and said, "I love it when you talk like that. You can point out every detail of a plan and tell whether it would fail or succeed. I love how you're so intelligent."
"You know I get it from my parents, you already know that both of them together could devise a plan to take over the world if they wanted to," Jason said laughing, then kiss her goodnight. "We should get some sleep for tomorrow, I plan on getting some teams spread out in the city to watch for our friends. I hope this plan is successful."
Jason woke and found Kayla had gone to the kitchen to cook breakfast for the two of them. When everyone was taken to Quebec, almost everything was left behind. Jason walked over to her and saw she was making pancakes, eggs, and bacon. Jason hugged her from behind and kissed her cheek as he started helping with breakfast. They sat down at the table and ate the best breakfast they had had in years, literally. So this is what a married couple feels like? I like it, Jason thought to himself as he ate. They sat there for almost half an hour before moving, the best morning they've had in years was that morning. Since the war started, a morning like that was rare to come upon, with the married thought running through his head, wondered how it would all go together. He knew there would be a lot he would have to do but he knew he dedicated himself to Kayla and he was willing to accept the challenges of marriage. Both of them knew they were meant to be together.
After breakfast, Kayla and Jason went to clean their guns and checked their equipment supply before seeing what the weather was going to be like, neither wanted to fight in the rain again, but both of them found themselves just staring out the window, they hadn't noticed it but the city had barely any places where war hadn't touched it. It amazed them how they hadn't noticed up until that moment. This is going to be hard as hell to clean, Jason thought to himself.
Their time gazing at the city was cut short when a knock came from the door. Kayla and Jason grabbed their rifles and walked to the door, ready for an attack. Jason peered through the peek hole and saw Orlando waiting outside. He opened the door and saw that the entire New York branch of Freedom Fighters was outside, he knew something was definitely up.
Orlando looked at them with wonder written on his face and said, "Bravo and Delta just walked up here and asked to talk to you. I don't know what's up man, what if it's a plot to kill you?"
"I highly doubt it, I think I know why they're here, but in case anything goes wrong, have the teams ready to take them out," Jason ordered.
Jason walked down the stairs to greet his guests', he was shocked to see such a small group, at least 40 men were in the entire group of both teams combined. He scanned the group and one man stepped forward, patches showing he was captain of one of the teams, compared to the group in front of him, he felt like a little kid in front of a group of bullies. As the man stepped forward, he saluted Jason and offered a hand of greeting and Jason accepted.
"My name is Captain Everett of Delta, my men and I would like to join you in the fight against the President. I can't believe no one has even tried saying no to his cause, after we saw what we were up against, there was no way we would be against you," the captain said.
Jason didn't see any threat towards him in the men, this was the moment Jason was waiting for. "Glad to have you on our side, it's been a hard fought war that we almost gave up on. Come inside and we'll debrief you, I need to know what you know for future references."
Jason and the squad leaders started walking to his unit when he turned to the men of Delta and Bravo, "Half of the 3rd and every floor up is available, make yourselves at home."
As they go to his unit, Jason asked a series of questions about what Barkley's plans were until the door closed behind them. "Why are you really joining?" Jason asked.
"Your father asked us to join the cause, he hates how he can't fight beside you. We knew if we don't fight, he would kill our families so we will fight. I hate how he works, he knows that killing one's family is the ultimate torture for someone to fight, he's done it before, he isn't very pleasant about it," Captain Everett said.
"So my dad told you to fight with me and ensure we win the war? Where is he? I'm sure we can get there in a few days time," Jason said.
The captain looked at Jason and said, "We're just the welcoming party, your dad is on his way here. He's coming with his whole team, including Commander Morales Mrs. Morales."
Kayla was taken by surprise, "How do you know our parents?"
"Your boyfriend's father is leading a rebellion inside Barkley's forces. He's been successful at convincing almost half of Barkley's army to fight with your rebellion. With that much man power, you could easily overthrow what forces still fight for Barkley, but we would need everyone to against his forces in Canada. His forces combined with the Canadian military, making things way harder than it would be. If you succeed and win this war, your truth will prevail unless you lose, then his lie becomes the truth," Captain Everett said.
"When is my dad's arrival time?" Jason asked.
"13:00 hours tomorrow, he's going to expect to see you. I don't know about my kids, I haven't heard any news of them. Your dad is a lucky man to be able to come see you," Captain Everett said, grief flowing across his face, he was afraid that his children are gone.
"I know he is, he's one of the best dads you could ask for," Jason said, anticipating his dad's arrival.
