Hi, my name is Maya. I am 15 years old. My BD is on the 8th of January, (1952) Yeah, I know it is 2012. Makes sense now? Of course it doesn't--I am dead. Weirded out? No problem. Now, a few facts: -- I like blue. -- I hav--had a boyfriend, Jem. -- I still love him. You probably want to know more about me. Turn the page. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hey. Name's Jeremy, but call me Jem. I came to life on 12/08/1952. So yah, I am 15 years of age. I am dead. Clear enough for ya? I like blue and green. I have a girlfriend, Maya. I miss her. Anyways, turn the page, this is my--and Maya's---story. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As it says on the top, the Underworld is boring. PERIOD. Want to know why? 1. Most of the shades in Asphodel don't remember their past life (or lives). This makes for boring, tedious conversations. 2. When you die, and you don't get into Elysium, you have to wait at least two years to get reincarnated. No joke. And that is actually a shame, since it is also possible to become a flower or some other lowlife living thing in your next life. Ugh. 3. You get to see Elysium from Asphodel, and it is SO freaking irritating. Elysium is what you can call proper 'life after death'. AND they never have to reincarnate unless they want to. I'm pretty sure that's why Earth is so short on good people these days. 4. Eternal Punishment is, well, eternal. Like really. There is this old guy who looks like King Midas, and is punished to listen to operas for all time. The weird thing is, he seems to enjoy it, until 'La Boheme' plays. Then he starts to tear his hair out. Trust me, that is one funny scene. And I'm not talking about the opera. Now, for my story.......... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Maya's POV Now, how did I die? Good question. Uh, so I was born in 1952, in Chicago. And I lived for 15 years before my unfortunate demise. You see, there was this fire at the school I went to, and the east wing went up in flames. My boyfriend Jem and I were at the school library, which happened to be in the very same wing. And it was all my fault. **************************************************************************************** *FLASHBACK* ''Come on, Jem!'' I pleaded, pulling at my boyfriend's sleeve. ''Let me guess. Brand new book in the library?'' he smiled, chuckling. ''Yes! Can we please go get it before lunchtime ends?'' He groaned, but agreed. I squealed in delight and half-dragged him to the library. As we entered my favorite place in school, we both smiled at Ms. Howard, the librarian, getting a smile in return. I trotted over to the shelves labelled 'FICTION', and started running my fingers over the bookspines, looking for that book. After a few minutes of searching, I was interrupted by Jem, frantically trying to get my attention. ''What?'' I snapped, slightly irritated at the fact that I couldn't find the damn thing. ''Uh, Maya, do you smell something burning?'' I inhaled, then coughed at the pungent odor that filled my lungs. ''I definitely smell gasoline! What's going on?'' I cried, starting to panic. We ran back towards where we'd entered, and saw the most horrifying thing. The glass doors were leaking smoke, and I gasped as I saw the tiles beyond it on fire. The flames were already licking at the wooden doorframe, sending smoke billowing even farther into the wood-plenty library. This was definitely no accident. This was planned, but why? I must have looked terrified, since when Jem saw my expression, his face hardened into a mask. ''Come on we have to get out somehow!'' he yelled, trying to act the hero. Oh how sweet he was.... Get yourself together you idiot! No time to waste on lovey-dovey thoughts! He grabbed my hand, and pulled me over to the windows. ''Find a window that opens, I'll go find Ms. Howard!'' he said, letting go of my hand after squeezing it. I nodded, too scared to speak. Breathing was getting harder and harder by the second as the toxic air filled my lungs, making me weaker with every breath. As he ran to find the librarian, I started to try the windows to see if they opened. Our school, and everything in it was old, and so most were stuck. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5......all stuck. There were only six windows. Now frantic, I shoved extra hard on the last one. ''Come on, open!'' I muttered, trying again. After 3 tries, it finally opened, sending in fresh air. I breathed in the clean air gratefully, and looked down. I froze. Stupid Maya had forgotten that we were on the 3rd floor, and that there was at least a 100 feet drop under me. I glanced behind me, hoping to see Jem and Ms. Howard. There was nobody. ************************************************************************************************
