                 Introduction

King and queen of Pride Lands, Kovu and Kiara sat on Pride Rock gazing down at the animals of all kinds. There were two cubs in Kiara’s arms, a dark gold one, the male, and a light brown lion cub, the female. They both opened their eyes to look a the sky, which was very beautiful. Rafaki opened a gourd and put some of it’s juice on each cub’s forehead. Then he took some sand and poured it over them, they both sneezed and he picked them up and walked closer to the edge of Pride Rock and help them up. The animals bowed down in honor of the new cubs, new members of the pride and prince and princess of the kingdom. He kept holding them high, they looked a little scared being so high in the air. They pawed at the air friskily. Then Rafaki held them both and gave them back to the lioness, Kiara and she licked them, Kovu sat next to her, and watched with smiling eyes. It was one of the most beautiful things he ever seen and he probably wouldn’t forget such a moment like this.

                  Chapter 1

One morning (a month later), in the Pride Lands, a young lion cub, son of Kiara and Kovu scampered across the African savanna. He was curious about what was beyond the hunting grounds, his sister, Vira watched him scamper around, and she sighed ’’You’re scaring the prey that live down there with your loudness,’’ she complained.

‘’Sorry, it’s just, I like to walk around, it makes me feel like a king,’’ he replied.

‘’But our dad, Kovu is the king, Jerob, you can’t possibly be king yet. You’re too young,’’ Vira giggled.

Jerob gave her a mean look and washed his dark gold pelt, ‘’You’re just jealous because you won’t be king.’’

‘’Why would I want to be king? Kings have to give orders to a bunch of animals, kings have to fight off hyenas, they have so much to do and I’m not cut out for all that.’’

‘’Kings are special, they are respected by everyone. Then one day they will shine upon us,’’ Jerob explained.

Vira didn’t reply, she just trailed away, Jerob scampered after her and walked at her side, ‘’You’re not upset again, are you?’’

‘’Of course not, Jerob. I’m happy that you’re going to be king someday,’’ she smiled.

‘’If I’m king, what would that make you?’’

‘’Probably just a lioness,’’ Vira giggled and rushed ahead into the cave of pride rock. Jerob raced after her.

‘’Somebody’s home early,’’ a lioness said, it was Jerob and Vira’s mom, Kiara.

‘’Yes, mother,’’ Vira said.

‘’I was playing, so was she,’’ Jerob said and crouched down into a playful pouncing crouch and waggled his hunches, ‘’When I’m king, we will always stay full and never go hungry.’’

‘’It’s a long time before you’re king, Jerob. A long time, but you must remember being king is not about hunting or giving orders.’’

‘’It’s not?’’ Jerob asked.

‘’No,’’ Kiara answered.

‘’Well, what’s it about?’’

‘’Ask the king, I have no idea myself,’’ Kiara purred and licked the top of Jerob’s head.

Jerob rushed out of the den and over to the tip of Pride Rock and sniffed the air, the sweet smell of flowers and antelope filled his nostrils, ’’When I’m king, all of this will be mine.’’

‘’Everything?’’ it was Kovu right behind him, sitting down smiling, ‘’You want to be king already?’’

‘’Yes, dad, what is it like being king?’’

‘’Fun,’’ Kovu said.

‘’Tell me more.’’

‘’Well,’’ Kovu’s smile went away, ‘’I wouldn’t want to spoil it for you, Jerob.’’

‘’If you tell me, I’ll promise not to already know in the future.’’

Kovu sighed and pulled Jerob closer and rubbed the top of his head with his paw. They both laughed and Jerob scuffled Kovu and bit his ear lightly, ‘’You know what, dad?’’

‘’What?’’ Kovu asked.

‘’When I’m king, I’ll tell you what to do.’’

Kovu sat up and looked at the light blue sky. Then he looked down at Jerob, ‘’I won’t be here when you become king.’’

‘’Where will you go?’’

‘’Jerob, when a king gets old, he dies. When a king dies, the new king comes. When a king dies, he goes up and watches over the land. One day, I will die, and it will be your turn to take my place as king.’’

‘’Dad, you can’t die and leave me,’’

‘’That’s quite some time from now, don’t worry.’’

Two pairs of footsteps thumped behind the two lions. Jerob turned, so did Kovu, but Kovu spoke first, ‘’Timon, Pumbaa, my old buddies.’’

‘’Hey there Jerob,’’ Timon said.

‘’We saw hyenas down by the waterhole. It was Shenzei, Banzai and Ed. They were gossiping about how much they wanted the prey for themselves, right Timon?’’ Pumbaa began.

‘’Uh-yes, the hyenas. They are pressing charges.’’

‘’That’s awful,’’ Kovu said, ‘’Guys, keep an eye on Jerob.’’

Jerob was about to go with his father but Timon stopped him, ‘’You’re with us, kid.’’

‘’Why can’t I go help dad? It’s too dangerous for him to go alone!’’

‘’Your dad knows what he’s doing, kid, he’s an awesome fighter.’’

‘’Uncle Pumbaa is right, he will be fine.’’

Jerob’s head dropped down, ‘’Okay, yeah.’’

Vira was washing her paws, talking to her friends: Veve, Germi, Hemiol and Dosik.

‘’So what, Vira? Your brother is weird anyway, so why tell me he can handle being king. Idiots can’t be king!’’ Germi, a light brown lion cub said, lashing his tail.

Jerob hid behind a rock and listened, ‘’Yeah, Vira! Who would want a loser for a king?’’ Dosik said, his orange fur bristled.

‘’Hey, knock it off, I’m not a loser!’’ Jerob came from behind the rock and sat next to Vira.

‘’Jerob, what are you doing here?’’ Vira whispered to him, ‘’I thought you were with dad.’’

‘’Why are you calling me dumb?’’ Jerob pounced on his sister and they rolled down a hill.

‘’Because!’’ she began, pawing at his belly fur, ‘’You are sometimes.’’

‘’Sometimes?’’

‘’Yeah, but not in a bad way. We all are dumb if you think about it twice,’’ Vira kicked her forepaws at his.

The four cubs stared at Vira and Jerob play, Germi sat up straighter and said, ‘’Lets go down to the waterhole, this is a waste of time.’’

His friend nodded and turned to follow him the opposite way down the hill.

Vira pinned Jerob down in the soft grass, ‘’Why were you sneaking up on me, king?’’

‘’I was just trying to see what’s going on, princess,’’ Jerob pinned her down.

‘’Well next time, try not to do that. I heard you coming anyway,’’ Vira teased.

‘’Did not!’’

‘’Did, too!’’

‘’Did not!’’

‘’Did, too!’’ Vira roared.

‘’Did no-!’’ a loud rumbling sound stopped Jerob’s reply short, ‘’What was that?’’

‘’Stampede!’’ Vira answered right as Jerob asked, ‘’Run this way!’’ she grabbed his scruff and pulled him away.

‘’I can run on my own!’’ Jerob growled, the two cubs reached a steep mountain and began to climb, sending dirt rocks flying.

The zebras came closer and closer and the cubs were scurrying up the mountain and at last they reached the top, panting franticly. Vira giggled, ‘’You were so scared!’’

‘’Hey, was not!’’

They watched the zebras run down below in high speed, ‘’Whoa, so many of them at once! It’s beautiful!’’ Vira said.

Jerob watched but did not reply.

Later that day, Kiara and Kovu were in the den. Kovu layed beside Kiara, ‘’They’re growing up so fast.’’

‘’Remember when we used to go out and play like that when we were young?’’ Kiara purred.

‘’Yes, and Simba wanted me to leave the Pride Lands. That was such a fun experience when we met as cubs.’’

‘’Yeah, brings back old memories, aye?’’ Kiara asked.

‘’Yes, it does,’’ Kovu licked her cheek and got up. He turned to look at the young lioness and at the other lioness inside the cave, ‘’I’ll send a patrol to hunt in a little while,’’ Kovu said.

 ‘’Okay, King Kovu.’’

                   Chapter 2

Vira and Jerob were over by the waterhole, drinking up the water at the edge of it.

Jerob paused and got a dancing beat.

‘’What’s the matter with you? Did you drink sweet water?’’ Vira asked.

  Jerob began to sing:

I don’t come to be royal.

To be the boss of the savanna.

But I come to be treated highly intelligently.

By my friends,

And my sister,

And everyone I meet!

They will treat me intelligently because I’m the king and it’s my show!

Vira rolled her eyes, and walked on a lowered tree branch, her blue eyes eying Jerob,

If you want to be respected,

You must be the best king.

And that for you ain’t no easy thing!

Vira jumped down beside Jerob,

Jerob stuck his tongue out at her and she backed away,

There’s more to being king than being respected.

 Vira shook her head,

There’s more to being a cub than being so stup-ed!

Jerob pounced down the mountain where the zebras stampeded and laughed while looking back at Vira, tripped in one of the hoof marks, his tail parted, on top of his head making it look like his hair grew, ‘’I’m not stupid!’’

‘’Yes, huh!’’ Vira laughed and the two cubs walked home laughing.

Zazu, the bird was putting his white feathers in a pile, his pink bald spots showing, ‘’My time is almost up. Before Simba passed on, he always told me that one day, it will be my time and Timon and Pumbaa would take my place but you know it’s not my time yet and they have!’’

‘’Don’t be so serious, Zazu, someone has to cover up for you,’’ Kovu growled.

‘’You remind me too much of Scar, you know that?’’ Zazu poked Kovu’s nose with his feather tips.

‘’I’m not like him, Scar wanted to take over the Pride Lands after sending the king, Simba away. I won’t do that to anyone,’’ Kovu explained.

‘’Yes, the better version of Scar if Mufasa hadn’t been king is what you are.’’

Kiara laughed at the mouth of the cave, ‘’What are you two yaspering about now?’’

‘’We were talking about the past!’’

‘’Er-yes, the past! He’s much like Scar was,’’ Zazu walked up to Kiara, ‘’He looks much like him, too.’’

‘’Maybe he’s Kovu’s father?’’

‘’No, that can’t be. Mama said I didn’t have a father.’’

‘’Did she?’’ Kiara asked, looking concerned. Kovu nodded.

               Chapter 3

Ed, Banzai and Shenzei were at the elephant graveyard, pawing at bones.

‘’Why can’t we just stay in the Pride Lands and try to live with as much food? Didn’t you see all those caribou? Those lions can’t eat all that!’’ Banzai complained.

Ed gnawed at a bone, looking in both directions, nobody knew what he actually was staring at.

‘’We should just run em’ out,’’ Shenzei suggested.

‘’Run em’ out? We’re talking lions, Shenzei! How are we going to do it?’’ Banzai asked.

‘’Hush, I have a plan,’’ Shenzei smiled a very evil smile and whispered in the ears of the hungry, desperate hyenas.

Ed started laughing over and over again, until Banzai yelled, ‘’Shut up! I’m trying to hear.’’

Ed started laughing again when the plan was said and done.

‘’So we’re going to get the bigger hyenas to run them out?’’ Banzai asked.

‘’Yes, it’s a brilliant plan.’’ Shenzei said.

‘’How are they going to listen to us?’’ Banzai asked.

‘’Let me explain,’’ Shenzei began.

Vira and Jerob were walking towards the elephant graveyard,

‘’Jerob, I don’t think we should go there.’’

‘’Relax, kings should take tours of what they own. Shouldn’t we?’’

‘’I guess so.’’

‘’We’ll be fine. Trust me.’’

‘’But Jerob, it looks so scary.’’ Vira started walking slow.

Jerob walked ahead of her, to the edge of the grass, behind the big bone, ‘’How about we jump over it?’’

Vira nodded and both cubs backed away and ran right over the bone and slammed into each other, the two started laughing and got back up to shake dust from their fur.

‘’Wow,’’ Jerob gasped, looking at the giant head of the elephant, ‘’That’s so huge. Do you think the brains are still in there, Vira?’’

Vira wasn’t there.

‘’Vira?’’ Jerob looked around him.

Nobody answered, but he saw a tail behind the big cage of ribs and ran over to it, ‘’Vir-‘’

‘’Shhh! It’s hyenas,’’ Vira put her paw to his mouth and whispered in his ear.

‘’What are they doing here?’’

‘’I don’t know, I’m trying to find out so will you please shhh?’’

‘’So we’ll get our pack and go over to the other hunting grounds that we found last year and get all the lion-sized hyenas together – united in one pack and attack the lions and we’ll have as much food as we can eat! Ed, do you like the sound of lion meat tonight?’’ Shenzei asked.

Ed nodded his head fast, while biting his tongue, ‘’Mhm!’’

‘’So we do this tonight?’’ Banzai asked.

‘’Yes, at sunset and we should get back by tomorrow morning.’’

The two cubs looked at each other and gasped, ‘’They’re going to-!’’ Jerob yelled as loud as he can, it echoed.

‘’Shhh, Jerob!’’ Vira whispered but it was too late. The hyenas turned, ‘’Get them before they get us caught!’’ Banzai yelled and a pack of hyenas jumped out of the eye sockets of the elephants’ bones and ran after them, snapping their jaws.

Vira and Jerob ran up a mountain of bones, Jerob stopped and kicked more bones at the vicious hyenas and almost fell, ‘’Grab my paw!’’

Jerob grabbed Vira’s paw and they panted at the top of the hill.

Jerob slowly began to realize that the hyenas couldn’t climb well at all.

‘’Lets go home, Jerob!’’ Vira growled and they ran to the open grass.

‘’Aw-man they got away!’’

‘’They-they did?’’ Banzai asked.

‘’Iiiieeeehhh!’’ Ed growled.

The hyenas turned around and left, they didn’t believe those cubs would tell a soul.

The cubs still were running, panting franticly, ‘’This is all your fault, you almost got us killed!’’

‘’Look on the bright side, we found the hyenas plotting to kill all of us.’’

‘’Yeah, you’re right.’’

‘’But how can we tell the others without them knowing we went off the borders into hyena territory?’’

‘’We’ll just tell them that you did a very kingly thing.’’

‘’Really, Vira?’’

‘’I thought it was brave, not to mention when you went down the mountain of bones to throw bones in their face when they were twenty four inches away!’’ Vira laughed.

Jerob managed a smile, he was very nervous about what he did. It really worried him. What if my parents get mad and not allow me to explore for a long time? What if I’m not going to be king? His smile faded and he looked down as he climbed up Pride Rock and into the cave. Vira sighed, ‘’Hi mom, hi dad.’’

‘’Er-how was your day?’’ Jerob asked.

‘’Er-fine,’’ Kiara returned the tone.

‘’Zazu is being taken care of,’’ Kovu turned his head to the bird in the tiny rib cage of a caribou, a small wood mouse was squeaking at him, it sounded like yelling but in squeaks.

That reminded Jerob of the danger he was in.

‘’Mom? Dad?’’ Jerob began.

‘’Yes?’’ Kiara asked. Kovu looked at them like he wanted to know what happened right away.

‘’Well, we had fun exploring!’’ Jerob smiled sneakily.

‘’Yeah, we watched zebras run, and-‘’ Vira nudged Jerob.

‘’Uh-yeah and we were walking away when we saw bones.’’

‘’What kind of bones?’’ Kovu asked. The cubs turned away from Kovu and Kiara. What are they doing? Kovu thought.

‘’Hurry up! It’s almost sunset!’’ Vira whispered in Jerob’s ear and the cubs turned back around. Kiara smiled and rested her head on her paws, ‘’Can you tell us what’s going on?’’

‘’We saw elephant bo-!’’ Vira nudged Jerob on the side, ‘’Ow!’’

‘’Enough, tell us what happened at the elephant graveyard now.’’

‘’Now?’’ Jerob asked.

‘’Now.’’ Kovu repeated.

‘’Uh-‘’ Jerob looked around at the floor.

‘’We went to the elephant graveyard when we weren’t supposed to but we’re very sorry! We saw hyenas plotting to kill us so they can get al the caribou! So we made a little noise and got chased and Jerob saved my life by stopping to throw bones at them when they were chasing us and catching up but we’re safe, no danger and we’ll never go back there and do that again for the rest of our lives!’’ Vira blirted out really fast.

‘’Sounds like yall had a big adventure!’’

‘’You went to the elephant graveyard? And Timon and Pumbaa let you do it?’’ Kovu asked.

The cubs nodded slowly, Kovu started laughing, ‘’That’s the craziest lie I ever heard, good one!’’

‘’We’re not lying dad,’’ Jerob growled.

Kovu’s eyes widened, ‘’Of course you’re not, I’m glad you were honest.’’

‘’Just don’t go there again and we’ll get ready for the battle.’’

‘’Yes mom,’’ said Vira.

The cubs left the den, Jerob pounced in front of her and crouched down, ‘’Why did you tell them?’’

‘’I just wanted to get it over with, Jerob.’’

‘’Well, you couldn’t at least played cool.’’

Vira rolled her eyes and walked past him, leaping down Pride Rock and catching up to the valley where her friends sat. Jerob thought to himself, oh no. He didn’t bother to listen to them talk about him, he wanted to explore some more.

He went off in another direction, behind Pride Rock, there was a noise he was curious to see who was making it. A small gray creature with black spots was gnawing at a bone, it was a cub but he sure did sound vicious.

Jerob crept closer to get a better view, ‘’Hey, what are you doing?’’

The fuzzy creature stopped, and turned, ‘’Who are you?’’

‘’I’m a lion, my name’s Jerob.’’

‘’My name Cougar, I’m a hyena,’’ said the cub and it started laughing.

‘’A girl hyena name Cougar?’’

‘’Yeah, have something wrong with that Jerm-rob?’’

‘’No,’’ Jerob laughed, ‘’Are you all alone?’’

‘’What does it look like?’’

‘’Where are your parents?’’

‘’Out somewhere, they left me to eat this bone.’’

‘’Why don’t you come with me and hunt, we can share a bird.’’

Cougar dropped her bone, ‘’You would do that for me?’’

‘’Sure, why not? Come on!’’ Jerob led Cougar to the grassy plains, and they both looked at the running caribou, running zebra, birds flying, and insects everywhere.

‘’You have a lot of prey!’’ Cougar said, ‘’I never seen so much food in my life.’’

‘’Where I live, we never go hungry for a minute.’’

‘’I wish I lived like a king like you do.’’

‘’I live like a king?’’

‘’To the hyenas, you do. I don’t know if that’s normally how you eat or not, hyenas normally eat bones or leftovers of dead prey.’’

Jerob got in a pouncing crouch and waggles his hunches at the sight of a duck. He pounced on it and feathers flew everywhere, he killed it in a single bite and dropped it at Cougar’s paws, ‘’Eat.’’

‘’You want some?’’

‘’No, I’m full.’’

Cougar bit into it and the warm, freshness filled her mouth, ‘’I never tasted such good duck before. Thank you, Jerob.’’

‘’Sure, no problem.’’

Cougar finished it and licked her paws, ‘’Wow, I’m full. But that was good. It was nice meeting you.’’

‘’You, too.’’

They looked at each other for a long time, smiling and soon Cougar turned and went back behind Pride Rock and laid down to sleep.

Something deep inside Jerob, he didn’t know what it was, made him feel differently about Cougar than anyone. He turned to go back to his sister when he saw a butterfly flying in the air, he caught it under his paws, he kept it covered and stared at his paws that covered the butterfly. Then he let it free.

He kept playing with it until he ran into Pumbaa, ‘’Oh hey, Pumbaa. Where’s Timon?’’

‘’He’s missing.’’

‘’He is? How long has he been missing?’’

‘’Quite a while but I’m afraid to tell King Kovu.’’

‘’The quicker you tell him, the faster he’ll be found, come with me.’’

‘’Yes, your majesty,’’ said Pumbaa as he followed Jerob to Pride Rock to report the news.

                   Chapter 4

Cougar stretched and yawned, a plumper hyena cub looked at her, growling, ‘’What are you sleeping for?’’

‘’I’m tired,’’ Cougar said.

‘’You act like you ate a house, you can’t eat any meat, our mother, Fadoris told us both that I eat the meat and you eat the bones, it’s the family rule, you haven’t eaten your bone.’’

‘’Why can’t a girl take a nap in peace?’’ Cougar asked, ‘’Peefu, you can’t always recite the family rule.’’

 ‘’You’re breaking it!’’

‘’No, I’m not!’’

‘’Kids, kids, settle down,’’ it was Fadoris, a female hyena, she has rosy pink cheeks, brown ears and a light gray body with pale white spots and black spots, ‘’If Cougar can’t eat her food the right way, she’ll have to starve.’’

‘’See!’’ Peefu stuck his tongue out at Cougar.

‘’No, I don’t see!’’ Cougar returned the hostile tone and stuck her tongue out, too.

‘’Oh you better not go there,’’ Peefu growled about to pounce at her.

‘’Peefu! Leave your sister alone at once! Why did you have to get your father’s ways?’’ Fadoris asked.

‘’Sorry, mama, but she started it.’’

‘’I did not!’’

Banzai, the father of the two kids and the mate of Fadoris came, and layed down beside his mate, ‘’Hey, kids.’’

‘’Hey dad!’’ said Peefu.

‘’Hi, dad..’’ said Cougar, ‘’Did you bring us any food?’’

‘’Not today, kids.’’

‘’But I’m hungry!’’

Cougar started to giggle, then she started laughing and burying her nose under her paws.

‘’Hey, knock it off, it’s not funny!’’

Cougar continued to laugh, her breath still taste of duck when she opened her mouth and the taste still stayed in its place. She laughed because she ate and her pest brother didn’t. It made her laugh harder and harder when he complained to her to stop.

Peefu pounced on her and landed an inch in front of himself, this made it funnier for Cougar and she kept laughing.

‘’What’s so funny?’’ Banzai asked.

                   Chapter 5

Germi was wrestling with Vira, she was not such a great wrestler because she barely practiced, but she tried, ‘’Is that the best you can do? You can’t always be such a slowpoke!’’

‘’I’m not a slowpoke, I’m just giving you a chance to win,’’ Vira lied.

‘’Oh, really?’’

‘’Yes!’’ Vira stopped to stand proud but Germi ended up knocking her down, ‘’Oh, Germi!’’

‘’Where’s your dumb brother?’’

‘’He’s…he’s mad at me.’’

‘’Why?’’

‘’Probably just stupid,’’ they both laughed.

‘’Yeah, now you’re talking. I want to be king instead because I’m much cooler and much more popular than Jerob,’’ said Germi.

‘’I don’t agree with you on that. You’re not related to Simba, you have to be related to the king before the king today, I believe,’’ Vira said.

‘’I know.’’

‘’You sure didn’t act like you did!’’

‘’Maybe that’s because I’m pretending to be Jerob.’’

‘’Nice,’’ Vira laughed, ‘’But Jerob will be king unless he dies.’’

‘’Dies,’’ Germi repeated, he had a wicked look on his face, ‘’If Jerob dies.’’

‘’What are you thinking? You want to hurt my brother?’’

‘’No, it just rang in my ear.’’

‘’So now you’re starting to like him?’’

‘’No, it’s not that,’’ Germi began.

Vita looked at him, her eyes getting big, ‘’Well, what?’’

Germi laid on the ground and smoothed his fur with his tongue, ‘’You’re brother is pretty cool.’’

 ‘’You think so?’’ Vira asked.

‘’Sure, I guess,’’ said Germi looking up.

‘’Oh,’’ Vira giggled.

‘’Wanna go somewhere?’’

‘’Like, where? Germi, you never invited me to go somewhere with you. Are you feeling alright?’’

‘’Yeah, I’m fine, Vira.’’

The two cubs walked up a not so steep hill and sat down to look at the valley below. There was this same feeling Jerob felt for Cougar, could this be love?

Vita looked at Germi, Germi looked at Vita, they both smiled at each other.

‘’Watch me catch that mouse,’’ Germi, probably feeling awkward, padded away and pounced on a mouse and held it proudly, ‘’Lets share!’’

‘’You want to share with me?’’

‘’Sure, why not?

They ate the deer mouse, and hung out some more.

Jerob pounced on his mouse and fed it to Cougar while her parents were out hunting, ‘’Want me to teach you how to hunt?’’

 ‘’Oh, yes! Sure!’’

‘’Crouch down, like this,’’ Jerob crouched down, ‘’Make sure your belly is touching the ground, like this, and when the prey you’re hunting isn’t looking, pounce on him like this!’’ Jerob pounced on the rock, ‘’You try.’’

Cougar did the same, ‘’So I crouch down like this,’’ she crouched down, ‘’Making sure my belly touches the ground,’’ and she pounced on the same rock but it escaped her paws, ‘’It escaped!’’

‘’Nice try, for a girl.’’

Cougar growled and they both laughed, ‘’Hey Ed!’’ Jerob and Cougar hid in some bushes, it was Banzai, Cougar’s father and Ed, Banzai’s friend. Shenzei wasn’t there, Cougar assumed she was tending to her own needs.

Ed, who wasn’t very bright, laughed in response.

‘’Do you think Fadoris and I are taking care of Cougar well? She’s a nice hyena cub but she doesn’t know the basics. Do you know what I mean?’’

Ed nodded without laughing and Banzai kicked a bone aside, ‘’Hey, uh-you sure?’’

Ed nodded again and picked up the bone.

‘’Gee-uh-thanks, Ed.’’

Jerob’s tail flopped out the bushes and Ed ran over to the bush and growled.

‘’What is it, Ed?’’

Ed pointed to the tail and the two vicious hyenas looked behind the bush, ‘’Are you spying on us?’’ Banzai asked.

‘’Uh, no!’’

‘’What are you doing with this lion, Cougar?’’ Banzai asked.

‘’Dad, I…we-!’’ Cougar stammered.

‘’You don’t have to explain just yet, little lion, are you Kovu’s son?’’

Jerob nodded slowly, his blood was cold like ice, he wanted to just run away.

‘’Well, I think I know what’s going on,’’ Banzai growled, ‘’And I don’t like it. Cougar, come with me, little lion, go home.’’

Jerob turned and fled, he looked back at Cougar and she looked back, ‘’Bye,’’ he whispered.

‘’Bye,’’ she whispered back.

                  Chapter 6

Rafaki,  the baboon has two drawings of lion cubs, Jerob and Vita. He opened a gourd on the tree and licked it, ‘’Jerob, no, King Jerob?’’ He used the juice from the gourd and made a patch of hair on Jerob’s head, ‘’Prince Jerob!’’ he laughed and threw down his stick, dropping the gourds attached to it, ‘’Hmm…’’ he took a darker gourd with darker juice and drew a hyena on the tree next to Jerob, ‘’Cougar and Jerob? Vita and Germi? What can this mean?’’

Kovu and Kiara were walking around Pride Lands, ‘’Don’t you think we should teach Vita the skill of being a hunter like Jerob? She’s old enough,’’ Kiara suggested.

 ‘’Maybe Jerob can teach Vira.’’

‘’Kovu, how could you be so pushy? Jerob just learned, of course he wouldn’t be able to teach anyone just yet-‘’

‘’There’s only one way to find out.’’

‘’What do you mean?’’

‘’What I mean is, we’ll see how much he knows.’’

‘’How? You’re not going to make him teach the other lion cubs, are you?’’

‘’Don’t you know anything?’’

‘’Of course-‘’

‘’I’ll tell you later once I figure out where Jerob goes instead of hanging out with Vita and her friends.’’

‘’How do you know he doesn’t hang out with them?’’

‘’I don’t. I just don’t know will it work,’’ Kovu looked down.

‘’Of course it will,’’ Kiara nuzzled him, ‘’You’re the king and we all depend on you. I love you so much, Kovu, I know you’ll succeed. Jerob’s our son and our future king.’’

‘’Oh, Kiara.’’

The two lions continued their walk.

Germi was with his mom, a young lioness named Hatina. Hatina was a golden brown lion, she was Kiara’s best friend, she was new to join the Pride, she came from another Pride far, far away. She licked the top of Germi’s head, purring, ‘’Oh, mom.’’

‘’You’re such a great son. I believe you would make a good king if you were Kovu’s son,’’ she half growled at the name of Kovu, for some reason she did not get along with Kovu even though he let her join the Pride when she was a rogue that was hungry and starving.

‘’Yeah, but I wouldn’t want to be king, being king is hard, Vita told me all about it.’’

‘’Vita?’’

‘’My best friend, she and I had a looong conversation about Jerob, her brother. He wants to be king so bad.’’

‘’Does he?’’

‘’Yeah, he will be, too. He’s a brave lion, the bravest gets the be king, you know.’’

‘’Yes, I know,’’ Hatina growled slowly, she was getting an idea, ‘’Mommy has a surprise for you, Germi. Tell Vita to tell her brother to come to the big hill over there, I have a plan to make you king.’’

‘’What are you going to do?’’

‘’Oh, it’s a surprise.’’

‘’What kind of surprise?’’

‘’I can’t tell you, you’ll tell Vita.’’

‘’I can keep secrets.’’

‘’No, Germi. Run along and tell Vita what I told you to do. Then when I give you the signal, I want you to do the next task. Tomorrow.’’

‘’What task?’’

‘’Oh, you’ll see.’’

‘’Will I like it?’’

‘’Of course, we all like good surprises, huh?’’

‘’I guess so, mom.’’

Hatina’s plan was much like Scar’s, she did not want to tell Germi because she mistrusted him. He was her son but she still didn’t believe he could keep such a juicy secret.

Germi searched for Vita, but he couldn’t find her, it was midnight, very dark, for some reason the plan was planned the day before the surprise happens. I wonder what she wants to do to Jerob. She’ll probably run him out and say he was hunted and eaten by hyenas, or she’ll kill him with her own claws. Would my mother do that?

Germi was so busy thinking hard and staring at the ground that he didn’t see Vira.

‘’What’s the matter, fur ball?’’

‘’Nothing.’’

‘’Oh com’on, you can tell me anything.’’

‘’It’s a secret, if I tell you, you wouldn’t be interested.’’

‘’Tell me!’’

‘’Okay, my mother is going to do something to your brother. I told her everything we discussed.’’

‘’Why?’’

‘’I don’t know..’’

‘’I knew you’d screw up somehow.’’

‘’Uh-yeah.’’

‘’Thanks for telling me.’’

‘’What are you going to do?

You wouldn’t tell the king what I said, or he will tell my mother I told you both and I’ll get in lots of trouble.’’

‘’I wouldn’t do that.’’

‘’Really?’’

‘’Nope, you see, I’m not a person who just tells others without figuring out what is going on myself.’’

‘’Yeah?’’

‘’We’re going to get evidence to bring back with us.’’

‘’What? But what about me?’’

‘’You, you’re coming with me.’’

‘’With you to spy on my mom?’’

‘’Sure, why not? It’s not spying, it’s evidence-getting.’’

‘’I don’t know about this.’’

‘’Com’on, Germi.’’

‘’Okay, lets go.’’

The two cubs ran over to where Germi and his family stay, a small rock den a little far off from where the other lionesses and their cubs stay, over by the water hole.

‘’This is where she stays?’’

‘’Yes.’’

The two cubs looked inside.

‘’Whoa, it’s bigger in the inside.’’

‘’I know.’’

Vira and Germi looked at each other in disapprove, ‘’How will we hide?’’

‘’We won’t. You distract her and I will hide.’’

‘’You think that’s going to work?’’

‘’Sure,’’ Vira looked behind her to see a small body, a lioness far away, coming close and she sprang in the bushes, ‘’Go!’’

Germi ran in the den, Hatina padded over to him, ‘’Hi, mom.’’

‘’Hi, son. Is everything alright? Why aren’t you with your friends?’’

‘’I got tired and thought I’d rest for a bit, mom.’’

‘’Oh.’’

‘’Mom, guess what? I know how to hunt mice.’’

‘’You do?’’

‘’Yeah, I know how to crouch down like this and pounce on one. Can you show me the crouch to catch bigger creatures?’’

Hatina crouched down a little lower and pounced on a bigger rock(her pretend prey).

‘’Like this?’’ Germi asked, crouching down the same way he would to catch a mouse to keep her distracted.

‘’No, like this,’’ she tried again.

‘’Like this?’’ Germi still crouched the same way as he would for a mouse. This kept Hatina distracted for quite some time. Germi saw Vira winking at him so he crouched down the right way, ‘’Like this?’’

‘’Yes, you did it!’’

‘’Mother, what did you say you were going to do yesterday?’’

‘’Well, I said tell your friend, Vira to take your brother and put him near the gorge. Then more will happen.’’

Vira leaped out of the bushes, ‘’You wouldn’t do that, will you?’’

‘’What are you doing here?’’ Hatina growled and looked at Germi who smiled sneakily.

‘’I am here to know what I need to know.’’

‘’You won’t know anything when I’m done with you.’’

Vira took off and Germi ran the opposite way, to Pride Rock. He ran as fast as he could without looking back. Maybe I do like Jerob, as a friend. I am risking everything just so he won’t get hurt, but it’s all to impress Vira.  He kept running and panted when he reached the top.

Kovu rushed out of the den just in time to see Germi, ‘’Where’s Vira?’’

‘’She’s…over…by…the…field,’’ Germi panted.

‘’Is she okay?’’

‘’No, my…mom…is…chasing her,’’ Germi breathed.

Kovu ran toward the field by the gorge, Hatina was chasing Vira in circles, Germi had collapsed and fell unconscious.

Hatina turned to see Kovu, ‘’Oh, hi, my old friend.’’

‘’Leave Vira alone,’’ Kovu growled.

‘’I wouldn’t dream of hurting her.’’

Vira ran between Kovu’s legs and panted.

‘’I ask you to leave Pride Lands, and never come back.’’

‘’What about Germi?’’ Vira whispered.

‘’As for your son, he stays.’’

‘’You can’t separate us!’’

‘’I’m the king.’’

‘’Yes, you’re the king,’’ with that, Hatina ran far east.

Kovu looked down at Vira, ‘’What were you thinking?’’

‘’Germi told me she was plotting to remove Jerob. I thought I could help.’’

‘’Helping doesn’t mean putting yourself in danger.’’

‘’Dad, I’m sorry, I-‘’

‘’Lets go home.’’

The two lions, father and daughter, walked home without a word. When they got to the den, Kiara looked worried, Germi lay beside her, ‘’What happened, Kovu?’’

‘’Hatina’s tricks,’’ Kovu muttered.

Vira laid beside Germi and went to sleep.

‘’We’ll talk about it some other time,’’ Kovu growled.

Germi opened one eye and looked at Vira and smiled, then he wrapped one paw around her and closed his eyes again.

‘’They’re so cute together,’’ Kiara purred.

 Kovu just stared.

‘’Don’t they remind you of two young cubs?’’

‘’Of us? Yes.’’

‘’We looked just like that when we were young, but that was some time ago.’’

‘’Yes, yes it was.’’

                   Chapter 7

Cougar was walking across the savannah with Jerob when they ran into Dosik and Hermol.

‘’What are you?’’ Hermol looked at Cougar with squinted eyes.

‘’I’m…I don’t know what I am.’’

‘’That’s dumb,’’ Dosik laughed and looked at Jerob, ‘’What are you looking at bee-brain?’’

‘’Nothing-I-‘’

‘’Things like you don’t belong here!’’

Jerob just turned away, ‘’Come with me, Cougar.’’

‘’They are mean, Jerob. Who raised them to be so rude?’’

‘’Their mothers.’’

Hermol jumped in front of them, her dark orange fur bristling and Dosik followed her, ‘’Where do you think you’re going, fur balls?’’

‘’Leave us alone, Dosik.’’

‘’I would if I needed but, perhaps now I can’t.’’

‘’Why?’’

‘’Because you’re too dumb to be alone,’’ Hermol growled.

‘’Good one!’’ Dosik laughed, Hermol joined in then Cougar started chuckling.

‘’Shhs!’’ Jerob whispered to Cougar, ‘’Do you want to make it seem like you’re on their side?’’

‘’No,’’ she whispered back.

‘’Fine, we will stay with you,’’ Jerob suggested foolishly.

‘’Knew you couldn’t resist hanging out with the cool lions!’’ Dosik crouched down, ‘’Right?’’

‘’Heh-heh, uh-right!’’ chuckled Cougar. The four cubs stood in a straight line, side-by-side and walked further from the Pride Rock to the gorge.

Jerob came to a stop, kicking rocks down the gorge when he got to the edge of the rocky slope.

‘’What’s the matter? You’re not afraid, are you?’’ Dosik asked.

‘’No, of course he’s not! He’s super afraid!’’ Hermol answered, with that, she butted Jerob with her head and he fell in the gorge and hit the ground with a big SPLAT!

He looked up, angry tears in his eyes, but said nothing. Cougar looked down in terror, ‘’Oh no! I’ll go get help.’’

‘’You’re not going anywhere, hyena,’’ Dosik pinned Cougar down and bared his fangs.

‘’Stop! I have to help my friend!’’

‘’He’s nobody now.’’

Cougar pawed at Dosik’s chest fur, ‘’He is somebody, I have to help him, he’ll die down there!’’

‘’Too late to be the big hero,’’ Hermol laughed, ‘’I see you’re not laughing now!’’

 Cougar let out a scream.

‘’Nobody can hear you cry for help,’’ Dosik growled.

Cougar let out a louder scream and the ground shook.

‘’Do you hear that, Hermol?’’

‘’Yes!’’

Dosik and Hermol took off running and Cougar got up as the dust of the dirt that was kicked in her face from the running lions cleared away and she coughed, ‘’Jerob, are you alright?’’ her fur was plastered with dirt.

‘’I’m fine! Go get help, I’ll see if I can find my own way to get out. Go, go now!’’

‘’Where? Where can I go?’’

‘’To Pride Rock, there are lions there and they may not be happy to see you but this is important and we have to think about the consequences later. Now go!’’

Cougar rushed over to the big pointy rock, she never been there before but she heard many stories about it. Like how it burned and the hyena packs got their revenge from Scar, a lion, brother of Mufasa, the former king back when Jerob’s dad wasn’t even born yet. She neared it and ran up to the top.

She looked in the den, where she saw the big lion, He must be the king. Then she saw two young lions next to a big, mane-less lion, that must be the queen. There were lions behind them, too.

‘’Lions!’’ she cried.

The king, most be Jerob’s dad, Kovu and the queen, Jerob’s mom looked up first, then the others did.

‘’What are you doing here?’’ Kovu asked, he had this confused expression on his face.

‘’You’re son is in trouble! He fell in the gorge-well, these lion cubs pushed him in the gorge and he can’t get out and I heard a shaking sound and I think it’s a stampede! Please help-!’’

‘’That’s all we need to know!’’ Kovu rushed out, towards the gorge.

Vira and Germi opened their eyes, ‘’Dosik…Hermol…’’ they both said at the same time.

Cougar trudged after Kovu, but she was far behind, for something so big, he sure runs fast!

When they got to the gorge, Jerob was clinging to a rock on the other side of the gorge, yelling for help, caribou were running everywhere (This is familiar to what Simba went through, isn’t it?)

‘’Dad, help me!’’

Kovu went down rock from rock, but there were too many caribou. He tried going through their legs but how could he bring Jerob to the other side without both of them getting trampled on?

Then all of a sudden, Cougar rushed past him and swiftly went in between the legs and grabbed Jerob, he lay on her back and she scrambled back to Kovu. Kovu smiled, he had nothing to say to this strange hyena cub. He knew she loved Jerob.

‘’Lets…go…’’ she breathed and the two of them walked back to Pride Rock and Kovu told all the lions what happened.

Cougar let Jerob down, ‘’Thanks for saving my life…’’

‘’No problem, it was all worth it.’’

Jerob smiled at her and she smiled back. Then they found their place, ‘’I better go home, bye Jerob,’’ Cougar licked his cheek and ran down Pride Rock to the back of it.

Jerob just stared down at her as she went and said, half to himself, ‘’Bye, Cougar…’’

Vira and Germi scampered over to him, ‘’Are you alright, Jerob?’’ Vira asked, her words coming in raging gasps.

‘’I’m alright, she saved me.’’

‘’I never thought I’d say this but I’m glad to hear you speak after all that’s happened.’’

‘’Haha, thanks, Germi.’’

                 Chapter 8

Months past since the incident happened, Jerob was a full grown lion, so was Vira, Germi, Dosik, Hermol, and Veve. Peefu and Cougar were full grown hyenas, Cougar hasn’t seen Jerob since the incident happened. She missed him.

One day she decided to go and find him, her brother Peefu looked the same as before, just bigger, ‘’Where are you going, Cougar?’’

‘’Away somewhere.’’

‘’Fadoris wouldn’t like that,’’ he growled and chewed on a bone, ‘’No more flesh!’’

‘’I’ll be back, by sunset.’’

‘’Oh you better be.’’

With that, Cougar went around Pride Rock in search of her love. I hope he still remembers me.

On her way, she caught a mouse for him, ‘’He’ll want a gift, too.’’

Jerob was laying down beside his father, Kovu, ‘’I wonder what happened to that hyena.’’

‘’Who knows. I’m glad she saved you.’’

‘’Yeah, good times,’’ then Jerob smelled a familiar scent, ‘’Do you smell that?’’

‘’Yes, smells like a hyena.’’

‘’A hyena!’’ Jerob jumped up from where he lay and looked down at Kovu excitedly, ‘’It can’t be.’’

Kovu looked ahead, ‘’Oh yeah, it is.’’

Jerob followed his gaze and saw a beautiful hyena, fully grown, around his age running straight toward him, ‘’Cougar?’’ he half muttered to himself and when she caught up to him and gazed into his eyes, he excitedly forced the words out, ‘’Is it really you?’’

‘’Hi, Jerob.’’

‘’Cougar! It is you!’’ they nuzzed each other and circled each other for quite some time, ‘’Where have you been?’’

‘’Around, I had to stay with my parents because they were quite suspicious with me staying away from the den. You know-with my crazy brother who tells them everything! But it’s great to see you again, I missed you so much!’’

‘’Yeah, me, too. Me and my dad were just talking about how you saved me. It was brave.’’

‘’Yeah, like I said It was worth it.’’

Kovu watched happily as the two best friends hung out, Kiara appeared and sat beside him. He didn’t know she was there until she licked his ear, ‘’Aren’t they happy?’’

‘’Yes, but it’s never happened-‘’

‘’What do you mean?’’

‘’Hyena and lion has never had such a bond since Scar died. Do you think it will work out for them?’’

‘’What do you think?’’

‘’I think, well,’’ he gazed at them once more, ‘’It will work out okay.’’

‘’Yeah, perhaps.’’

Jerob and Cougar went away from Pride Rock and neared a small forest. They began their love-journey onward. They rolled around down the hills, pinned each other down and stared into each other’s eyes. (Song: Can you feel the love tonight) It was then, that they actually knew, it was very obvious and easy to see, the lion and hyena were in love.

Night soon came, life was peaceful. The slept side-by-side in the tropical forest and planned to go back to the Pride Lands in the morning.

The next morning, the similarities between the siblings occurred when Vira and Germi went on their love-journey. They didn’t go far, but they did hang and they realized with no doubt that they were in love.

Dosik, fully grown was with two female lions, Hermol and Veve, he was getting ready to set his next plan, plan B.

‘’So what do you want to do to Jerob this time?’’

‘’It’s not Jerob that I’m after. It’s the hyena and Jerob.’’

‘’That’s too bad, I like Jerob,’’ Veve muttered half to herself.

Dosik didn’t say anything, he only turned to look at her, hatred in his eyes, ‘’Well go along and help him!’’

‘’Oh, Dosik. I can never abandon you.’’

‘’Well, listen, girl,’’ Hermol, Dosik’s mate told Veve.

Veve has never really played roles in hurting Jerob or his sister, Vira. She didn’t understand why Dosik and Hermol hated him so much. Maybe it’s because he was going to be king or maybe it’s because Jerob was always a great hunter and learned easily than any other cub. But did that give him reason to hate him? She followed behind as they walked on, looking at her paws, Jerob, I hope you’ll be okay…
