Denver, Colorodo- October 4, 1999
"Okay, you two party animals, up to bed." Hannah Livingston commanded her two young children. Her kids sat in the living room playing the new game Gabriel had gotten for his birthday that day.
"But mom! We're almost done." Gabriel protested, pushing down the lever and making his 'Hungry Hungry Hippo' eat the remainder of the balls. Seven year old, Anna pouted at her brother. She had been distracted by her mother and Gabriel had taken advantage of the moment. "See, all done." He said, getting to his feet and grinning at his big sister.
"You're a cheater, Gabriel!" Anna yelled, with her hands on her hips. Gabriel stuck his tounge out at her.
Their father, Daniel, chuckled under his breath. "Definitely his father's son." Hannah smiled at her husband.
"He's only six and he's becoming more like you everyday. Deceptive and crafty." She said, and turned back to her kids. "But seriously it's time for bed." Daniel got up from his chair and scooped Anna up in his arms.
"You're getting so big, I'm not gonna be able to do this much longer." He said with a laugh.
Anna giggled. "Or maybe you're just getting too old, daddy." She said, with another round of laughter.
Daniel gasped. "Anna! I'm hurt!" He said, walking into the kitchen and up the stairs. He tucked her in her big princess themed bed. "Goodnight, princess." He said, giving her a kiss on the forehead. "Sweet dreams."
"Goodnight, daddy. See you in the morning." Anna yawned. Daniel pushed one of her brown curls out of her face, the shut the light off and went into Gabriel's room where Hannah was tucking him in.
"Did you have a good sixth birthday, sweetie?" Hannah asked her son.
Gabriel yawned and nodded. "I did, mommy. I loved the bouncy house."
She smiled down at him. "Good, I'm glad. Goodnight, Gabe." Hannah said, giving him a kiss on the forehead. "I love you."
"Goodnight, mommy. I love you too." Hannah walked to the doorway where Daniel stood. Dan shut off the light.
"Goodnight, Gabriel." He said.
"Goodnight, daddy." He said back, and Daniel shut the door.
Later that night, Gabriel was awoken by the sound of a loud crash from downstairs. He sat up in his bed.
"Mommy? Daddy?" He called. No answer. His six year kid mind started playing tricks on him, making him think there were monsters down there. He took a deep breath and let it out. "Just be brave, Gabriel." He told himself. He got out of bed and patted his way to his door and slowly opened it up. He crept into the hallway and down the stairs. He peeked his head around the corner and saw blood splattered all over the walls and counters. Tears filled young Gabriel's eyes. "Mommy..." He walked into the the kitchen and found his mother being held at knife point by a scary man he had never seen before.
"Baby, it's going to be okay. Go back to bed." She pleaded. She had multiple stab wounds on her body and was white as a ghost. Then, Gabriel looked down and noticed his father's dead body laying at her feet. His tears started falling faster. "It'll be alright, Gabriel. Go back upstairs." Hannah demanded. Gabriel looked at the man who held his mother. He had dark brown hair and scary dark eyes and a scar under his right eye.
"Listen, to your mom kid." The man said, and pushed the knife deep into her chest and pulled it out swiftly. Gabriel turned and quickly ran up the stairs, into Anna's room.
"Anna! Anna! Mom and dad are--" Gabriel stopped when he saw Anna was not in her bed. "Anna?" He called, but she did not answer. He searched her room, but she was no where to be found. Then he heard loud footsteps in the hallway.
"Look in the master bedroom for money and jewelry. I'm going to find the boy." The voice in the hallway said. Gabriel hurried and hid in Anna's closet and stayed there for hours until he fell asleep.
