6/23/05 'HOT IN THE SKY'

OTIS TRULY FOUND IT HARD TO BELIEVE--IT WAS JANUARY 1946--HE WAS 20 YEARS OLD AND HE HAD A PRIVATE PILOT LICENSE TO FLY LIGHT SINGLE ENGINE AIRCRAFT--

FLYING THE J-3 PIPER CUB WAS VERY EXHILARATING FOR OTIS--ACTUALLY BEYOND ANY MEANS OF EXPRESSING THIS FACT --

HOWEVER 'FEAR' WAS ALWAYS PRESENT WITH OTIS IN COMBINATION WITH THIS EXHILARATION--NOW THAT REALLY MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO EXPRESS THIS EMOTION IN WORDS--A TERRIFIC DESIRE TO DO THIS AND A TERRIFIC FEAR OF DOING THIS--THAT WAS THE WAY IT WAS FOR OTIS--

OTIS WOULD WAIT FOR A NICE SUNNY DAY OR PARTLY CLOUDY --WITH A SLIGHT WIND OR NO WIND --NOT TOO COLD--THE IDEAL DAY FOR OTIS TO RENT A PIPER CUB AND GO FOR AN EXPERIENCE BEYOND BELIEF FOR HIM PERSONALLY--

ON ONE OF THOSE DAYS--OTIS WAS IN THE AIR ENJOYING A FLYING EXPERIENCE--LOOKING AT THE PATCH WORK LANDSCAPE BELOW HIM--THE PIPER CUB FLYING ALMOST BY ITSELF--ONLY SLIGHT MOVEMENTS OF THE CONTROLS NEEDED TO MAINTAIN ALTITUDE AND SPEED AND ATTITUDE OF FLIGHT--LANDING WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT FOR OTIS--BUT HE MADE MANY LANDINGS AT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS AND NEVER HEARD ANY COMPLAINTS FROM INSTRUCTORS--SO I GUESS OTIS LANDING SKILLS WERE FAIR AND GOOD ENOUGH--

SUDDENLY AT ABOUT 3000 FEET ALTITUDE--THE WORST OF OTIS FEARS HAPPENED--THE ENGINE SUDDENLY STOPPED RUNNING AND SMOKE WAS COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE TOP ENGINE COWLING AND BLOWING OVER THE WINDSHIELD--IN SECONDS THAT SMOKE TURNED TO FLAME--THIS WAS NO TIME TO PANIC--DO WHAT YOU COULD AND HOPE FOR THE BEST--OTIS PUT THE PIPER CUB INTO A STEEP SLIDE SLIP TO THE LEFT AND THIS CAUSED THE FLAMES TO EXIT THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT--A LEFT SIDE SLIP IS WHEN YOU CROSS CONTROLS--MOVE THE CONTROL STICK TO THE LEFT AND FORWARD AND PUSH THE RIGHT RUDDER PEDAL-- THIS IS ACTUALLY A SIMPLE MANEUVER--JUST BE SURE TO KEEP ENOUGH NOSE DOWN TO STAY ABOVE THE STALL SPEED--

AS TAUGHT BY INSTRUCTORS IN SIMULATED FORCED LANDINGS--QUICKLY LOOK FOR A LANDING AREA THAT YOU THINK YOU CAN GLIDE TO--THE BEST OTIS SAW HAD TWO FENCES CROSSING THE AREA--OTIS MANAGED TO GLIDE IN TO THIS FIELD PERFECTLY AND CAME IN FASTER THAN USUAL--OTIS DID NOT INTEND TO MAKE A STALL LANDING--OTIS WAS HOPING THAT BY COMING IN A BIT FASTER HE COULD BREAK THE TWO WIRE FENCES AND THUS SLOW TO A STOP MORE QUICKLY--IT WORKED AND THE AIRCRAFT STOPPED IN AN UPRIGHT POSTION--OTIS QUICKLY EXITED NEAR THE FLAMES AND PUT DISTANCE BEHIND HIM AS FAST AS POSSIBLE--THE PIPER CUB DID NOT EXPLODE - BUT IT DID BURN TO CINDERS--

OTIS MANAGED TO HITCH A RIDE BACK TO THE AIRPORT--REPORTED THE BAD NEWS TO THE OWNER--OTIS GRADUALLY CALMED DOWN AND REALIZED HOW LUCKY HE WAS AND HOW LUCKY TO HAVE BEEN TAUGHT TO FLY BY A GOOD INSTRUCTOR--MR.EARL WEST---

A FEW WEEKS LATER -- OTIS DECIDED HE MUST GET BACK INTO THE AIR--THIS HE DID SUCCESSFULLY --AFTER LANDING SAFELY IT WAS OBVIOUS TO OTIS THAT HE WOULD NEVER PILOT ANOTHER AIRCRAFT AGAIN--

THIS WAS NOT A DIFFICULT DECISION FOR HIM TO MAKE--BUT OTIS STILL MANY YEARS LATER WOULD LOVE TO EXPERIENCE THE EXHILARATION EFFECTS OF FLYING THOSE PIPER CUBS--

OTIS WONDERS WHAT HE WOULD DO NOW AFTER 55 YEARS IF HE HAD THE CHANCE TO ATTEMPT TO FLY ANOTHER PIPER J-3 CUB ? - -(WITH AN INSTRUCTOR OF COURSE )- - - - -

WRITTEN FOR OTIS AND ENJOYED THE MEMORIES --BY OTIS ENGLISH
