3/21/07 wed. 'SOLO A P-51 MUSTANG'

I HAD SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED MY ADVANCED FLIGHT TRAINING AT WILLIAMS FIELD -CHANDLER, ARIZONA 1944-

NOW I WOULD FLY SOLO - A P-51 MUSTANG NORTH AMERICAN SINGLE SEATED FIGHTER PLANE--1000 HORSE POWER--LIQUID COOLED V-12 ENGINE--

I FIRST DID ALL THE PRE-FLIGHT PROCEDURES--GOT PERMISSION FROM THE CONTROL TOWER TO TAXI TO THE RUNWAY AND PROCEED TO TAKE OFF--

I WAS NOW HEADED DUE NORTH AT THE END OF THE RUNWAY--I PUT THE WING FLAPS DOWN 25 %--OIL COOLER DOORS OPEN --PROPELLER PITCH IN THE LOW PITCH POSITION--MIXTURE LEVER IN THE 'RICH' POSITION--ALL GAUGES READING NORMAL--

I OPENED THE THROTTLE --THE ENGINE QUICKLY WENT TO ABOUT 3200 RPM--I CORRECTED A BIT TO THE RIGHT TO OVERCOME THE ENGINE TORQUE--A SLIGHT MOTION FORWARD ON THE CONTROL STICK TO LIFT THE TAIL WHEEL OFF THE RUNWAY--AT A QUICKLY ACHIEVED AIR SPEED OF ABOUT 125 MILES PER HOUR--A SLIGHT BACK MOTION ON THE CONTROL STICK--AND ME AND THE P-51 WERE AIR BORNE--AN UNDESCRIBEABLE EXHILARATING

FEELING WHEN YOU ARE SEPARATED FROM THE EARTH--

CLIMBING 1000 FEET PER MINUTE--TO 4000 FEET ALTITUDE--ADJUSTED THE MIXTURE CONTROL TO CONSERVE FUEL--PUT MORE PITCH IN THE PROPELLER BLADES--PULLED THE THROTTLE BACK --ADJUSTING TO GET THE MANIFOLD PRESSURE GAUGE TO READ BETWEEN TWO RED LINES--THIS WILL GIVE THE CRAFT MORE SPEED AND NOT OVERLOAD THE ENGINE--CRUISING ABOUT 250 MILES PER HOUR NOW--TO A POINT ABOUT 100 MILES NORTH OF WILLIAMS FIELD--

I NOW MADE A 180 DEGREE TURN AND HEADED FOR HOME--WILLIAMS FIELD--I HAD KEPT IN CONTACT WITH THE CONTROL TOWER THERE--AND AS I APPROACHED THE AIR FIELD--I SWITCHED MY RADIO TO THE LANDING APPROACH CONTROL TOWER--I WAS TOLD MY APPROACH WAS GOOD AND TO PROCEED TO LANDING--

NEARING THE END OF THE RUNWAY--I MISJUDGED AND SAW I WAS COMING IN TOO LOW--I OPENED THE THROTTLE A BIT--BUT NOT ENOUGH--THE WHEELS ON THIS P-51 HIT THE GRASSY AREA AND THEN THE CONCRETE RUNWAY--THE RIGHT TIRE BLEW OUT AND THE AIRCRAFT 'GROUND LOOPED' AS THEY SAY--AND SKIDDED SIDEWAYS DOWN THE RUNWAY--

AFTER A COMPLETE STOP--I MANAGED TO OPEN THE DOOR AND STEPPED DOWN TO THE HANGER FLOOR--I HAD FAILED MY FIRST FLIGHT SIMULATOR TEST--

PERHAPS AND I HOPE I CAN DO BETTER NEXT TIME AND GET MY LICENSE TO FLY A REAL MUSTANG P-51 FIGHTER AIRCRAFT---A BEAUTIFUL MACHINE ----ASKING FOR A GOOD PILOT--------
