Chapter 1 - The Holiday
"Oh silly Lilly, you're always falling over" Vicky said as she sat Lilly back up on the sun bed. And Lilly dutifully allowed Vicky to do so without the slightest resistance or sound. That's just the way it was. A bear was allocated to a girl or boy and from there on in, they would, if lucky become best buddies. From then on they were partners. After all, what better cover for a secret agent than to be a child's teddy bear? And Lilly thought herself lucky because young Vicky took very good care of her. Perhaps a few too many hugs and kisses. But at least Lilly wasn't one of those bears who spent most of their time discarded in a toy box or cupboard full of smelly old socks, lumpy Lego bricks or other unwanted items one might find in a child's wardrobe. No, Lilly got to travel first class in Vicky's arms almost everywhere she went. And today was no exception to that rule. So by the pool she sat stealthily moving into the shade and planning how she was going to carry out her mission.
Lilly had worked very hard in persuading Vicky's Papa to book the holiday to the right place. Always making sure the 'right' holiday brochures were on top of the pile that Vicky's mother had brought home and that the lap top returned the 'right' results when the family searched for their summer holiday. Whispering into their ears in the middle of the night as they slept until they dreamt of the sun and beaches of The Gran Canaries: And all this without appearing to move at all.
Now I suppose you would like to know two things at this point. One, who did Lilly work for and two, exactly what was the mission? Well for that we need to step back in time a little. Back to when Vicky was at school, before the summer holidays. It was then that Lilly had been called to TOTS; which to the untrained eye looked like any other high street teddy bear shop: The self-same shop that Vicky had chosen Lilly when Vicky was but a tot herself. Though that is not strictly true, and it was more of a case that it was actually Lilly who had chosen Vicky. After all if a bear is to spend a long time with a girl then she must be sure they will get along. Now TOTS as far as humans understood, and what was on the colourful sign outside reading Teddies On The Shelf appeared to be just a regular shop that sold teddies. A good name for a teddy bear shop, don't you think since nobody would want a teddy left on the shelf would they? But in fact what the sign actually stood for was The Office of Teddy Security. Yes, Lilly worked for the government!
