DID YOU BRING IT?

Childrens stories

I had to write this short, two paged play for my Acting class and decided to post it online. The purpose of the exercise was to lure the audience into the play to find out what 'it' was. My teacher gave me a 98. Tell me what you think.

DID YOU BRING IT?
By
Grace McNeely

CHARACTERS:

BEN, eight years old, cunning, bossy, untrustworthy.

OLIVIA, six years old, naïve, curious, "gives in", sister of BEN.

TIME: The present winter, during recess.

PLACE: An elementary school's playground.

(As the lights come up, BEN is sitting on a bench. He looks impatient and cold. OLIVIA enters. She was just running)

BEN
(impatient)
Did you bring it?

OLIVIA
(panting)
Well, I just had it! But it's gone! I swear! It was right in my hands!

BEN
C'mon, Olivia! I was depending on you.

OLIVIA
I know. I'm sorry. Do you want me to try again?

BEN
(obviously)
Yeah! Want to know what you get when you give it to me?

(OLIVIA looks excited. BEN pulls out a raggedy doll from his backpack. OLIVIA's face looks like she is about to cry)

OLIVIA
Miss Daisy!
(angry)
You took Miss Daisy?

BEN
It was the only way you would help me.
(OLIVIA tries to grab Miss Daisy of the bench, but BEN is too quick)

OLIVIA
Okay. I'll be right back!

(OLIVIA leaves and BEN is left alone with a smirk on his face. She comes back with her hands cupped, but nothing is inside)

BEN
Well? Where is it?

OLIVIA
(annoyed)
I just had it! It was right in my hands. Right here. And now it's gone.

BEN
(acting disappointed)
Well, that stinks, because now Miss Daisy is gonna live with me.

OLIVIA
No! I promise I'll get it to you somehow.

BEN
OK, you've got one more shot. If you don't have it, you're not getting her back.

OLIVIA
But, it's harder than you think! I mean, it's-

BEN
I don't care! Just get it somehow.

(OLIVIA stares at him angrily)

Please.

(OLIVIA leaves again and BEN is left alone chuckling. She comes back, again with nothing in her hands)

BEN
You still couldn't get it? I'm sorry Olivia. Miss Da-

OLIVIA
That's not fair! What was I supposed to do? Snow melts in my hands!

(BEN starts laughing a bit as the lights slowly fade to black)
