Love Bug

Charles Lee McCabe
Long/Short Media
As the shell cracked, Mindy heard a voice say that she didn't have much time, so she had to do what made her happy. As she worked her way out of the shell, she looked around for the owner of the voice, but she couldn't see anyone. She decided not to worry about it, but thought that it would be a great idea to follow the advice anyway. As she looked around her surroundings, she noticed the shell she had just come from, a ledge close by, as well as a wall that went up so high that she couldn't see the top. Given these options, Mindy decided to try out the ledge.
She walked over to the ledge, looked around, and saw a world that was dark, but beautiful. She didn't see any movement, so she took this opportunity to try out her wings, and practice the flying that she was craving. As she perched at the edge, she stretched out her wings, fluttered them a few times feeling herself lifted with each beat of the wings, and jumped. At first, she fell for what seemed like a long time, until she remembered to flap her wings. When she realized this, she put her wings to work, and found herself flying so quick that she had to squint against the wind.
By the time she got the hang of flying, she noticed that the sky was beginning to grow brighter, and that there were people and vehicles moving around below her. She didn't know how she knew that these things were people, and that those things were vehicles, but the knowledge just kind of came to her. She took it in stride, though, and started flying around the people that were the closest to her.
As she got close to the two people, a man and a woman, she saw the way that the man looked at the woman, but the woman didn't seem to notice. This made Mindy a bit sad, so she wanted to make both of the people feel better. She started to fly around them in a strange pattern that wasn't quite the circle that she meant to fly in, but it appeared to work, since both people turned to each other and smiled.
Having done all she could to make these two happy, she flew off to see if she could make other people happy, as well. She continued to help people by flying around for them all day, and into the evening. She always tried to fly in a circle for them, but that odd shape was what always appeared instead. By the time that the sky grew dark again, Mindy was tired, but extremely happy. She had helped so many people, and had flown as much as she could ever want.
A strange feeling started to take hold of her then, so she looked for a high ledge where she could rest and be out of the way. She couldn't really explain what she was feeling, but it felt a bit like stirring in her stomach. By the time she reached the closest ledge, she had grown tired, and her wings barely supported her. She landed and knew that her flying was over, but she didn't mind because she had used her flying for a good cause. Soon, she realized what the stirring in her stomach was; she was pregnant! But how? She then realized that because she had spread so much love, she was granted a bit of love in return, in the form of a baby!
She thought back to the way that she was born, and was pleasantly surprised to find that the shell that she thought of as an egg was really her mother, and that it was her mother that had spoken to her. She smiled, and as she felt her shell crack, she spoke the words that had been passed down to her, "You don't have much time, so you have to do what makes you happy."
With this done, she closed her eyes, thought that she had the best February 14th ever, and then Mindy was gone. Megan crawled out of the shell, looking around for the owner of the voice, but didn't see anyone. She looked around at her surroundings, and decided that this was as good a place as any to start, so she better get started.
