Christmas Eve
The air is full of Mothers sugar cookies and Father bellowing carols out of tune. My grandmother is making the turkey and my Uncle is busy trying to watch T.V.We are very great with New Years eve. I watch as my birthday turns into a whirlwind. As Father says as well as it being the night the years change like leaves in autumn he tells me I'm a new years princess. I smile. Soon the sky turns into a deep deep indigo blue. Its not as dark as my Father's eyes though which are as black as the buttons on my coat. We all walk outside into the garden to blow up fireworks into the sky. We were a a special family. A happy family. As red fireworks shoot into the sky I nuzzle into my Mother's lap smelling her perfume she got from my Auntie who lives in Paris. It smells like honeysuckle, vanilla, sugar and roast turkey from the kitchen. Later we go inside and as 12 o'clock chimes Mother and Father kiss. They look like a fairytale prince and princess. My mother with her fiery red hair. My father with his Brown hair beginning to streak with grey. My Grandmother kisses Grandpa and my Uncle, datless and alone kisses me on the cheek. As he soon runs out the door sayin he 'll be late for his cab I wipe his kiss of my face. Wiping away the smell and trace of liquor and cigar smoke. He died 5 years later. He outlived Mother and Father by 3 years. I always wonder why..... why it wasnt someone else who got crushed by that american car..... why I dont celebrate Mothers day anymore as well as Fathers Day is all due to a red Mustang.
