JEZEMAYA'S BOOKSIE CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION ROUND 1

It was a cold winter season and not a single bird could be spotted coz they had all migrated towards east, may be to some tropical countries. Even the animals were hibernating, curling themselves cozily inside the tree trunks and burrows and Hira looked out from her window crying quietly and gazing at the last autumn leaf still clutching onto the walnut tree.

Her Mother was in her deathbed, struggling to live and Hira couldn't afford to get even a doctor. They lived in a small old thatched cottage in the middle of Willow woods, selling the fruits and nuts which they found in the woods and the money which they got was hardly enough for a one day meal. And now that it was winter, their livelihood had come to a halt.

"Hira" her Mother called, with the little strength she had in her body.

Hira quickly wiped her tears and went near her bedside.

"I'm afraid I'll not be able to be with you" her Mother said faintly.

"You must find someone".

"Oh Mother! What are you saying?"

"Listen to me my child, YOU MUST FIND SOMEONE!" said her Mother in her bleak voice.

"But how Mother?" asked Hira through her tears.

"GOD will send him to you". With these last words, her Mother went off to sleep peacefully and the last autumn leaf had also fallen.

Days passed by with Hira grieving over her Mother's death. She was now a tiny and a lonely piece of island in a vast ocean. Poverty had driven her hungry and she had almost nothing to eat. One such hungry night, Hira had fallen asleep unconsciously, when suddenly there was a loud rapping on the door.

She took the candle and went to open the door, still yawning and thinking

'Who could it be at a midnight like this?'

As she opened the door, she was pushed inside and a shiny object was placed near her heart.

"Gimme all that you've got?" a man threatened her and shut the door behind him.

Frightened to death, all kinds of thoughts ran in her mind when all of a sudden, she remembered her Mother's last words and wept inside her mind

'OH GOD! You've sent me a thief!'

She soon calmed herself down as she felt a cold gentle breeze from the gap of the window and said patiently

"Please wait here" and brought him a cup of warm tea and a small piece of loaf along with some fruits and nuts.

"This is all that I've got till the end of winter" she said kindly to the bewildered man who was still holding his knife.

"You can't FOOL me, woman! Gimme all your money and jewels" he thundered.

She took a ring from her finger and gave it to him

"My Mother gave this to me before she died"

He snatched it from her and observed it keenly

"You can't stay alive with a trick like that! This ain't gold nor silver."

"Please bear with me. This is ALL that I have" she pleaded.

He held her hand sideways and went still closer, almost to her face and stared into her eyes closely .Hira gave a soft and a short high toned "HuH" shriek as he held her hand coz she felt insecure. But after a few moments he walked towards the door.

"The tea is getting colder."

Her words fell on deaf ears.

"Please treat this as your home." She said kindly and pulled his hand with her both.

"What are you plannin' in your mind? Tryin' to put me behind bars" he asked suspiciously in an angry tone.

"I wouldn't hurt a soul" she said, a bit hurt.

He then pulled the old wooden chair and began digging into the food as if he hadn't eaten for months. Though she was quiet hungry herself, she adored him eating, sitting opposite to him in the candlelight, trying to see his face in the dark background.

After eating, he headed towards the door

"Are you going?" she asked in her tender voice.

"Can't you see, woman?" he said and shut the door.

She didn't give up. She opened the door and said

"You're always WELCOME to come here again."

But it was dark and she couldn't see anything- not even him, hiding behind the bushes.

2 years passed by and it was a lovely spring with the sound of birds chirruping in their charming melodious voice and rabbits hopping, the Willow woods was filled with the fragrance of sweet smelling colorful pretty flowers.

But Hira heard an unusual noise. The sound of carriage wheels and horses neighing- sounds which she heard only in the town where she sells fruits and nuts. Soon she heard a soft knock on the door and when she opened, she found a handsome young gentleman dressed in a black coat and suit waiting.

"Hello! My dear Lady. My name is Edmund" said the stranger, lifting his hat.

Hira didn't know who this stranger was. But soon tears started rolling down from her eyes.

"I wouldn't have become a Businessman."

"You changed my life and my heart, with your tender kindness-LOVE which no one else had ever shown me, and I was a fool to have suspected your kindness!"

He paused and asked

"Will you marry me?" as he held an iron ring towards her.

Hira immediately fell into his arms as she cried, remembering the painful memories while she missed him all these years. She still looked so pretty, as he had seen her in the candlelight- the prettiest to his eyes although she was in rags.

"You needn't suffer in this cottage anymore" he said and lifted her like a feather, in his arms towards his carriage.
