Probably in the history of World cinema, nothing will ever come close to BOLLYWOOD. Based in Mumbai, (East) India, it has had a meteoric rise with the largest number of movies produced anywhere in the world. Expatriate Indians love them. And others too are not untouched by their magic.
-
Colourful songs and dances keep the viewer captivated. Not only are the movies memorable, the songs become national anthem. And dresses create a fashion statement, seen at any street corner. Of course, the hero and heroine are the nation’s heart throbs.
-
The history of Hindi films is a surprising mix of facts with fiction. On July 7, 1896, cinema was first introduced in India. Lumiere Brothers’ Cinematography’s first six films set the pace for movies. Professor Stevenson brought the first bioscope to India. Inspired by it, in 1898, Hiralal Sen began filming.
-
Dadasaheb Phalke made the first silent feature film Raja Harishchandra (1913) while Ardeshar Irani made the first Indian sound film Alam Ara (1931), which was a super hit. Izra Mir made the first Indian English language film, Noorjahan (1931).
-
The film with maximum (71) number of songs was Indra Sabha (1932). The first woman music director was Jaddan Bai in Talaash-e-Haq (1935). The first color film was Kisan Kanya (1937). Guru Dutt made the first cinemascope film Kaagaz ke Phool (1959). Raj Kapoor made the first 70 mm film, Around the World.
-
The first film to be shot at a foreign locale was Sangam (1964). Bhanu Athaiya was the first Indian to get an Oscar for Best Costume Designer for Gandhi (1982). First 3D movie My Dear Kuttichathan (1984) was released in Hindi as Shiva ka Insaaf. Longest (20 minutes) film song was the title song of Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon.
-
The partition of India into Pakistan made a deep impact on Hindi films in the 1940s. Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand became nation’s heart throbs. Nargis, Meena Kumari and Madhubala’s pairing became memorable with these heroes.
-
In the 1960s Rajesh Khanna ruled the roost with romantic films. It was in 1970s that Amitabh Bachchan (angry young man) created a whirlpool with violent movies. He still continues to be a mega star. Rekha’s pairing with him took the nation by storm.
-
In the mid-90s, the scene saw a shift to a newer breed of heroes (the mighty Khans). Shahrukh Khan (popularly known as SRK) along with Aamir Khan and Salman Khan kept the nation engaged with their kind of light, romantic and humorous movies. Madhuri Dixit, Kajol and Kareena Kapoor became household names.
-
SRK’s magic continues till date. He is called “the King”. With the maximum number of hits (Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge, etc) he has cult following all over the world. His pairing with Kajol is being revived by Karan Johar in Khan, an under-production film.
-
In recent times, Shahid Kapur continues with his near-matching looks of SRK. His pairing with Kareena gave a super hit Jab We Met. Emran Haashmi too is not far behind creating near hysteria in Pakistan, UAE, Bangladesh, etc with a super hit Jannat.
-
In 1896 no one would have imagined where the Hindi film industry would reach. In 2008 the future is not only rosy, it is fast becoming a multi-billion dollar industry with an active collaboration with Hollywood. For Bollywood, the future lies in its present. Long live the King, long live Bollywood.

Bollywood is after my own heart. I have seen most of the movies. SRK is my favorite. Kajol, Kareena are my favorites. I like the song and dances. Alltogether a thorough family-fare. Malaysia has a lot of Indians and all watch these films. Hindi films are a phenomenon the world-over. They are part of our lives. I didn't expect this article but it is about time someone introduced Bollywood here. Good job.

hi! saif. u r 2 deep into Bollywood, u may as well write something about it. ;-)

Bubbly. Bollywood is part of Indian culture. Punjabis and Muslims are an integral part of it. Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and now English ethos are found in large quantity in its content. I particularly like its songs and dances. SRK is my favorite too. He is the king.

hi! listener. i couldn't agree more with u. u know the scene.
SRK IS THE KING. period. ;-)

Hi bubbly, I confess I'm a tad out of my depth here.....NOT a Bollywood follower per say, but your piece is interesting all the same. I am not an habitual TV viewer and almost never go to the movies... nobody's fault except mine. And clearly this is a HUGE gap in my awareness.... I am an avid reader however and always welcome newsy bits and new stories, articles etcetera..ah .. ah... Its not that I don't want to keep abreast of wots hot wots not in Bollywood et al, its more that the bio-rhythms from the telly put me to sleep.

I must also stress that I enjoy experiencing different cultures......... educate me further....

Please stay in touch.
Love your writing

Here in London, Bollywood is hot stuff. I love all those songs and dances. Although I don't understand the language, I get by through sub-titles. They are on my ipod nano too. SRK is the king. I love him.

hi! london. i want ur nano. it'd be great to hear what u've. my nano is all english. but i'll change that. ;-)

We have the largest Nigeria film industry here in Africa. But nothing could beat Bollywood. It is hot favourite here. Africans are crazy about these films. I don't know Hindi but my ears are tuned to this music. I simply adore it.

you're amazingly smart. how did you cet all of this information? i haven't seen any of these movies (then again i rarely watch tv) but now you've peaked my interest, i want to watch a few of these...which ones do you suggest i watch first?

ps. i tried writing a poem, could you please take a look at it and tell me what you think?

hi! gigi. ur comment makes me realise my mistake - this should've been my first article to post on booksie. i've been to 2 film festivals, watched innumerable movies, both english and these and other chinese ones. and i'm late in paying a glowing tribute to them. i'll rectify my mistake starting now.

start with DDLJ. you won't forget it.

i'll be on ur page soon. lots to read and i'm much BEHIND with read requests. ;-)

I am surprised to find Bollywood on Booksie but it is not totaally unexpected. So much research has been done and so many books have been written on these super stars. In France here we have a statue of SRK in our museum. These movies are simply exotic. They are A-one.

Posted: Jun 2, 2008

Author Comment:

hi! addu. from now on, don't ever be surprised. as u say, they r A-one - top. ;-)

I remember in DDLJ, SRK says to Kajol, "Mujhe tumse pyaar ho gaya hai Simran." He loved her in the movie. Although I didn't understand, it was lovely to watch. UK has a large Indian population and some of my friends are Sikh Punjabis. I learnt Bhangra from them. I have seen quite a few films. After Hollywood, it is Bollywood.

Bubbly, mujhe tumse pyaar hai. You are too sweet.

hi! el. i know the UK scene but u provide an insider's info. some day, i'll visit london. yo! ;-)

I have no idea of Bollywood but many of my friends are East Indians Bonjabis and their music is dynamic to set my pulse racing. When I go to their weddings, they are opulent with music, dance, grandeur. It is another world.

hi! brit. ur integration in other cultures is amazing. i'm glad for it. luv ya. ;-)

Cool. As much as I like Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise, same goes for SRK. He is my God. When he dances, we dance automatically. He has so much energy, I feel drained out. His battery is over working but I love him all the same.

I have to admit that I've never watched an entire Bollywood film. So, I'm delighted by your concise historical analysis of this entertainment phenomenon. Discussions like this make the medium more accessible to those of us who grew up in a different culture. Nice.

hi! deb. i didn't know u too! ha! u never fail to surprise me. ;-)

Hi Bubbly,
i am so sorry that i couldnt comment on ur work before but to tell you the truth i dont really understand short stories that well so there was nothing useful i could contribute.
UR article on Bollywood however is much appreciated. No doubt it is the premier film industry in the world and its conception has given birth to countless stars that rule the highest echelons of motion picture history.
Your article was well informed and nicely written but i must say that you needed to perhaps divide this one into different parts. It was way too short. You forgot to mention stars such as Aamir khan(That my girl is a crime LOL) Hrithik Roshan, saif ali khan and Akshay(Khana and Kumar} not to mention heroines like zeenat Aman, Tabu etc. It would also have been nice (especially given that many of the people on Booksie are not well aquainted with Bollywood) to include some details of the flourishing art house cinema of India. Look at films like "Masoom", "Mirchi" and more recently films by Deepa mehta("Fire", "Earth", "Water") and Meera Nair such as the "Namesake" these are the films which are getting Indain Cinema noticed by the international film critics. And Actors like Aishwariya Rai, Shilpa shetty and Shabana Azmi are well known the world over.
You need to choose a specific topic for ur article i felt as if you kept jumping from point to point, was this article about the history of Bollywood or was it about its icons? you have to give a more precise dileanation. That will make ur article more fluid and consistent.

hi! azmat. ur knowledge is incredible. perhaps, it'll take me sometime to explore the powerhouse of info called azmat shah.

i agree with u on all the points u've mentioned. my idea was to trace bollywood from inception till now within 500 words. therefore not everything could be accomodated. art cinema doesn't make news even in india except with the critics. of couse not mentioning hrithik is a CRIME. but i'm sure u'll enthrall us with ur article on them. ur awareness about them all is awesome. ;-)

Wow...I love it.
I always love Kajol and Shahrukh...
They're the best couple ever.

i'm not really a fan of Bollywood when i'm at a young age but my whole family was crazy about it, and then i saw this great movie collaborating Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai, i was like whoa with the songs...

Besides, most Bollywood movies talk about relationships and family bonds they kinda draw my attention.

And another thing i love about it are the great actors and actresses. The actresses especially since they have those exquisite beauty...

Great article, Bubbly:) I enjoyed it very much

Amazing amazing! I grew up on Indian movies, everyone here watched them every Sunday on our national tv channels (here being trinidad and tobago in the caribbean). Half of our population is of Indian descent so the songs in particular are very popular here.

Only one thing though, i must confess to an undying love for H Roshan. If you did an article about him you'd have to put it in the Erotic section - he's so hot.

Your article shows the lengthy history of Bollywood and gives a great perspective for these new young good looking actors and the many many songs from the movies. Lata Mangkeshkar! Ah so many beautiful songs!
