Man is a social animal. If he can follow God, Satan too has his own followers. And along with virtues come vices. I've listed below five vices. It is not necessary that you should be addicted to them. But do let me know which one would you quit first and why. If there are any other vices too, feel free to mention them. Your cooperation is much needed and liked in advance. Thank you.

Please comment on the following vices:

1. Gambling

2. Smoking

3. Drunkenness

4. Drugs

5. Sexual Promiscuity

6. Any other vice according to you

I don't have any vices I don't think so I can speak hypothetically...IF I had all of these addictions or whatever....

hmm

I would quit smoking first cuz that's most detrimental to my health and I think it's pretty gross. Next goes the drugs, then the drunkenness. Okay, those two are gone to ensure my safety of mind, so I can secure money and places to live and stability. Then if I had a gambling problem I would quit that now so ensure I actually have money to do things with my life. Then comes any other vices that you haven't mentioned...whatever they are lol. Last goes sexual promiscuity because well as long as it's safe sex then it's not a HUGE problem...ahahaha...yea. That's my two cents here.

Posted: Jun 20, 2008

Not that any of these actually apply to me, the order in which i would quit them would be as follows;
1 - Smoking (It'll kill me)
2 - Drugs (It'll also kill me)
3 - Drunkeness (It'll kill me if the first 2 haven't already)
4 - Gambling (You don't want to live in the gutter)
5 - Sexual Promiscuity (Not cool)

Posted: Jun 20, 2008

Lol. You are asking quite mature vices. I don't have any but I'll like to quit them all at once for they are not good for anyone. Thanks for inviting me. Such interesting questions keep me ticking. Good luck

Posted: Jun 20, 2008

My dear. You are asking very pertinent questions on vital issues. I'd like to eliminate all the vices from this world for it to be a better place to live in. God bless you.

Posted: Jun 20, 2008

Well dear good question,by the way i do not like any of them. I don't smoke,drink,flurting,mooching...etc,etc!!

God bless you.VICKY.punne4e

Posted: Jun 20, 2008

I would probably quit drugs first. They kill you and give you one hell of a time if you try to quit. They are worse than cigarettes because they ae more addictive, at least thats what I have been told.

Yours Truly,
Liz

i'm a member of our school ministry office....D: of course i'll not go to any of those vices............D: but it's all up to the person if they want to quit right...?

Wow,interesting article!
Well my opinion about vices is hmm, gambling, its not a crime or smtn, but you lost alot of money, spend more and more every time, you become an addict, and if u have family it's pretty bad;Smoking is not good for health, you destroy your self and others around you.My mum got astma, and she stopped smoking...But my dad still smokes....Its bad for you;Drunkness, haha.Very bad.I hate that.My dad was...ahh....But he stopped drinking, and we were happy, but now again he started again, and stopped again....I hope this was the last time...;Drugs destroy your whole life.5)its discrase...Dont like it...6)?,LOL...I dont have any vices...But girls and boys from my class(they are 14 like me)they smoke and drink.Everyone in my class(ex class)except me and 1 girl more...And there were only 13 of us in one class...

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

I did smoke earlier but I've already quit that. Others I don't do.

There are other vices like greed, selfishness and I donèt like them also. Good idea.

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

I will never touch them to have to quit them. And I would encourage others to do the same. Well written.

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

All vices are bad so I donèt wanna touch them. I want world to be vice free. But I apreciate this article. This shows you are an aware writer.

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

I'm against them all But I do Encounter Smoking in a personal sense because my Fiance is unfortunately a dedicated smoker. In my personal opinion....Smoking and drinking should be the first to go. Everything else is a bonus.

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

I don't have any vices, but if I do have one, I would probably quit smoking, because my parents were smokers, and they try to quit, then I learned that smoking can damage lungs, so no smoking for me!

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

i SO hate cigarette smoke. So i think people should stop smoking. As Ana said, it damages lungs. :| your article could raise awareness against these vices.

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

i would probably get rid of them all but first gambling i don't really like it at all

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

if i could get ride of one voice it would be inposabale because i want to get rid of all of them so no one in the world would have to go threw the problums that come with thoughs voices sorry it isnt a very good meaning but i tryed i like how you are haveing the reader anwser a question at the end

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

I don't have any of these, but if I did, I'd give up the drugs then the drunkness. I was never fond of smoking, inhaling, injecting drugs into my body, I never did that, and I will never will. The drunkness I'd get rid of as well, I never liked the taste of it, I'd drank it once, and it keeps making many people in my family drunk and some even died from alcohol poisoning or from their own idiocy. So I'll take those two out first.

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

personally........i hate drug addicts, drunkards and smokers..........*from the bottom of my heart* ^-^

Gambling is just a waste of time and money.,...besides that it does'nt do any good except turning you into a waster!

Sexual promiscuity is a sin.............in corerigible and certainly not acceptable!

besides these i HATE nymphomaniacs paedophiles and rapists..........if given a choice i shall give them a public death and nothing else as punishment.

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

oops!! that was incorrigible *mistyped*

and i wont be quitting any of them first because i would never take up any of these vices!

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

Alright, I don't have any of them, but I would quit first the ones that would kill me more, so in order by fatality (drunkenness, smoking, drugs, sexual promiscuity, and gambling)

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

I'd give up drugs first because they would kill me the fastest. i dont do any of those vices though, btw.

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

Thing is... I dont do any of those and never plan to do any of those. I'm only 15 and it's a sad thing when I see others my age doing all of those. I agree we need to stop it. Good article. =) Mandy

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

hi! canadian. first of all, allow me to congratulate u for writing such a fine article. this is the need of the hour when vices' grip over the world is tightening. it is about time something was done about them. it is important to create an awareness.

i'm not into any of these nor'd encourage anyone into them. so there u go. good job. lol. ;-)

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

Well, since I have no vices, I'll have to speak hypathetically.

I'd try to quite drugs first and foremost! Well, I'd try to quite all of them, but since I don't do any of them, I have no idea as to how addicting they are or how hard it would be to quit them.

I'm not a huge religious person, but I like how you added God and Satan into your article.

All in all, I really like your article and I think it's very persuasive, in a way.

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

Great article! I congraduate you for your success on this article. I am 15 and I hopefully will NOT do any of the following things you have listed. I make my vow now not to fall into any of those catergories.

~Maple Bowen

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

This article is a good one. When I see what havoc they can cause in one's life, I want to stay away from them. Were I in them, I'd want to quit them all together and once and for all.

Good that you thought about these cancerous vices. Hope they are eliminated. Liked it very much. ^-^

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

The only one of these I had a problem with was smoking. But my wife took care of that. Best thing I ever did though. I do smoke cigars on special occasions but nothing other than that

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

This is a really interesting article and your question made me think. Now depending on the drugs I'm hypothetically taking, I'd most likely quit drinking first as it poses the most danger to those around me (especially if I'm driving). Then would come the drugs, then the gambling as it's the biggest drain on money, then the sexual promiscuity. Smoking would be last on my list of things to quit because it's fairly cheap (in comparison) and causes danger mostly to me.

A lot of people I've known in the past have been involved in some or all of these things, and when I see the damage it causes to their health and their life I'm glad I don't have any of these vices!

Stephanee :)

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

Very interesting, i would have to think.

~~i would quit drugs first because i think cigarettes and drunkness are drugs to so this way, i can quit three subjects at once. And for my health to, i wouldn't waste my life on drugs for that matter!

Thanks for sharing!!

~~LeAnne

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

hmm... i would quit drugs first because it affects the body faster than cigarettes.. then the drinking then the smoking.. i've known how these vices are detrimental towards everyone, either the person or the people around that person, and so i will never let myself do any of the listed vices. excellent article, btw. =)

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

I smoke and dabble in gambling. The smoking is on a pretty regular basis, even though I have cut down quite a bit. As far as the gambling is concerned, I usually take a casino trip twice a year. Eating a lot of fatty foods would be considered a vice as well I suppose; it's a shame how cheap it is to eat unhealthy and all the healty foods are so darn expensive.

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

I forgot to answer your question; I would definitely quite smoking first!!!!

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

Some drugs are good. Some drugs are bad. The important thing is to do your own research on the subject, educate yourself, and make the right choice. For instance, coffee is a drug that helps stimulate your mind. If used correctly this drug will improve your productivity. Cocaine is also a stimulant, but may lead to severe side effects. Again, the important thing is to do your research and think for yourself. =)

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

Well I don't do any of these, because the first three killed my grandmother 7 years ago, the gambling is illegal, sexual promiscuity is wrong in my Lord's eyes, and finally I live by the law of my Lord and Savior.

The Irish say every man must have a vice and there are only three vices worth having:
the loving of women;
the drinking of whiskey;
the making of poems.

I suffer from / enjoy all three.

They don't say what vices every woman should have.

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

You are asking very pertinent questions on vital issues.

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

well
being the person that I am I would have to say that most likely I would never do/use any of these.
But if i would have to I think the drunkeness or smoking

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

Well, I would quit smoking first (along with drugs)
2nd....drunkenness
3rd....sexual promiscuity
4th....gambling

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

Everyone is saying that they don't have a vice. . . everyone has a vice, it's just different and may not be as intense and harmful as some of these. God created every man and woman with virtues and vices, harmony in all things, the thing that really matters is which one they choose to fight against.
I'd quit all of them, but it's not my place to say whether they are bad or immoral. What is wrong to one person may be perfectly acceptable to another.
~Kaori

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

The first one would be drunkenness, which I have already done, because it would have put me in jail, a mental hospital, the cemetery or the unfortunate walking dead.

Second, which is really a tie for first, is drugs (again already been there, done that, got the t-shirt)

Third, which is actually second, if the first two were a tie, was smoking. (again already quit, believe me I'm no goody goody though)

Fourth, which is probably first because I have already quit the first three, is gambling.

That leaves sex and after quiting the first three I need to gamble a little. Ted.

THANK GOD I HAVE NONE...But if asked, i would help my friend quit smoking....

as for me, i would like to quit 'anger'....which is my biggest vice....that just cripples my thought process...after my son's birth, i have changed a lot....

I hate the people who introduce our teenagers to drugs...and i am so scared for my son ....

As for gambling, never knew any one in my circle do it, so no idea....

and as for drinking problems, yes i have seen my neighbour drinking lots when i was a kid....because his eldest son died in bike accident when he was returning home after completing his Medical school....

and another Uncle is now in the final stage of lung cancer because of smoking....passive smoking affects other members of the family as well....

very nice article....thought provoking ....

Posted: Jun 21, 2008

This may sound weird but I have smoked done drugs and drank and gambled. Not necessarily for the fun of them but just to see if I had the will power to quit. To see if my mind was tough enough. I can't really think of any vices in my life right now though.

Posted: Jun 22, 2008

I've never done anything on the list but taken a few puffs as a kid off of mom's cigarette...but this is the order in which I would quit...and probably all in one day

1. Drugs (I've seen first hand with bio-parents how they ruin lives)

2. Smoking (not only does it affect my health, it affects others around me by second hand smoke)

3. Drunkenness (it's like depression, it hurts everyone who loves you, unless they're drunks themselves...but I've seen first hand the damage)

4. Sexual Promiscuity(the world is already demeaning to women, so I'd quit this in a heart beat right along with 1, 2, and 3,)

5. Gambling (I'd quit this because it can become a very bad habit and there is a numerous of dangers that can accompany it)

Posted: Jun 22, 2008

i like this article as it brings some very important issues to light. while i cant say that i have had all of the listed vices i can say that i have had at least one.

well lets see i used to quit and now i can proudly say that i havent had a cigarette in 13 years so tho i may not now or in my past have had the other vices i guess i would have to say i would quit smoking first since i have done that one aleady and it seems an eaier vice to quit than the rest. also i watched my dad die from smoking and it wasnt pretty to see my big strong dad brought to a very weak man who hardly had the strength to draw a breath. i was with him when he took his last breath and it was hard so now i preach to everyone about smoking as i have seen first had what it can do to the body. also my mother smoked and watching her husband die from lung cancer wasnt enough to make her put down the cigarettes, which should tell you what a strong grip the vice of smoking can be. the only thing that made my mother put down her ciagrettes was that they found cancer in her left lung (which it is worth of stating here that the lung cancer was her third time with a form of cancer). after finding cancer in her left lung the dr had to do a surgery which resulted in him having to remove her ENTIRE left lung so she now has one lung left and it has the residule effect of smoking left on it. but she did quit smoking and she has been cigarette free for a lil over a year now YEAH MOM :)

next i would have to say that if i can quit smoking then i could quit drugging. my ex husband (and the father of my children) is a drug addict. i did not know of his drugging before our marriage and by the time i found out we were already married and had a child and one on the way. tho i have never had a drug problem i do know what it can do to the ones you love so i would have to say that next after giving up smoking i would have to say drugs.

the next thing i would have to give up would be gambling as after giving up smoking and drugging i would find a lot of extra money on my hands and why spend it on gambling. i would want to have something to show for my money--like a home :)

next i would have to say drinking as drinking clouds the judgement and if not drinking so much it would be way easier to give up the last vice of sexual promiscuity. and drinking does take its toll on the body and can lead to a horrible death. also i have seen what drinking can do to a family. my grandmother was a drinker and her need for a drink led to her disappearance a little over 27 years ago, we have not seen her since nor do we know what happened to her :(

next i would have to give up the sexual promiscuity. for me its more of a moral thing than anything else also if not done in a safe manner then sexual pormiscuity can and will lead to ones death.

also i would like to say that i feel like a vice that could be added to your list would be gluttony. ooohhh and also sloth. actually i guess you could say that any one of the 7 deadly sins could be added here.

alos i wanted to say that i agree 100% with Kaori.

ok that was my two cents worth (actually i think it was more like two dollars worth lol)

Posted: Jun 22, 2008

Intresting article. None of those actually apply yo me, but if they did I would probably first try to quit smoking and then drugs and then finally gambling. I think that quiting to smoke might be the easiest and so on. It's intresting, actually, I'm not all that sure.

Posted: Jun 22, 2008

I don't do any of those and yet when I was young I did them all except the gambli

Posted: Jun 22, 2008

I think this definitely depends on the individual. I have a friend who is an alcoholic (currently in AA), has done many many drugs, and was highly promiscuous before I ever met him. Don't think he gambled or smoked... But because he was always honest about everything going on, I could somehow put more trust in him than many others around me who tend to close themselves off from their own shortfalls. The vices to me are directly linked to their consequences. If there are no consequences, then theoretically there would be no vice.

Personally I say:
1. Drugs (ever watch intervention?)
2. Smoking - Which is actually a drug (have lost a close one to lung cancer)
3. Alcohol - which is also a drug
4. Promiscuity - note this vice is different in that it directly affects other people emotionally in a unique way. To me it is much different animal than winning or losing a bet, or picking up some crazy disease from sharing a needle. For instance it can be the worst vice of all of them, or the least depending on how it effects the other people involved.
5. Gambling - somehow I just don't understand this one. Is it the thrill people get out of doing this? If you take a big picture approach and see how the odds are stacked against you at a casino, why would you put yourself in this situation? Not trying to be judgemental, but just personally don't understand this one. I mean if you win, then it is obviously not a vice, correct? Also, how do you define gambling, because you could theoretically classify someone like Warren Buffet (more aptly George Soros) as a gambler. Because they won (and have found a way to keep winning) they are generally famed and respected.

Some people can handle certain vices, and not others based on their personal history and genetic code. By the way, how many people who claim to have no vices drink coffee everyday, or take "general" pills everyday? These too can easily be classified as drugs, but it is difficult to draw the line because society says they are fine, and the consequences are not as apparent.

Posted: Jun 22, 2008

Well, my biggest vice is that I dream too much....I am rarely in the real world...but since I consider myself a writer, that is my virtue too. So I wouldn't want to quit it any time soon...maybe just reduce it a little bit. Other vices like greed and selfishness would go high on my list of things to quit.....I dont do any of the things in your list but if I did I would probably work on quiting all of them pretty fast in whatever way manageable.

Posted: Jun 23, 2008

hey sorry for the late comment .... not enough booksie time ....... i do not have any vices espicially the ones u metioned ........ i'm addicted to chocolate though does that count? lol! nice article!

Posted: Jun 23, 2008

I have another vice. TV. It seems to get mens attention then never let them go. Some get out of the trap but others are there for more then a few years. It's sad because I used to be one of them. Damn. Any ways, I liked the article and I hope to comment on more things that are so important. Keep it up ;)

Posted: Jun 23, 2008

Lol I agree with brauweiler141. Men do get attracted to the TV.

I've never done any of these things but I'll try to answer this.

1. Gambling - I don't want to lose all my money. Because I would want to get things for myself (not anything below).

2. Smoking- I don't want to cause harm to myself or anyone around me. I don't want to be the cause of someone's death because I was smoking.

3. Drunkenness- I bet I wouldn't like the taste of beer or anything like that. Eww....Then to throw up after...ugh.

4. Drugs - Okay. Now here it goes....Drugs are seriously stupid..unless you are of medicine from a doctor. I understand that but if you do drugs because 'something horrible happened' then that's just really stupid because everyone has things bad in their lives.

5. Sexual Promiscuity - I read a comment by CraZ4Life saying how the world is already demeaning women. I totally agree with that! I mean I think I would give this up first because I don't want anything to do with this until AFTER marriage. I don't really care if it's safe because it really isn't safe. That's why I would give this up first.

Posted: Jun 23, 2008

hmmm.....
i don't have any of these, but i would probably have to say i would quit drugs first
cuz they make you addicted and want more even if you don't have the money...and they make you very desperate...and if you take more than you're supposed to then you will have LOTS of problems and most likely die....my sister is into drugs.... and it's scary to be around her when she's high, but she's now trying to get off them ^^- , so i'm hoping :]

Posted: Jun 23, 2008

Well.....none of these apply to me but I would quit them in this order

-drugs
-drunkedness
-smoking
-sexual promiscuity
-gambling

interesting article. keep up the good work!

Posted: Jun 23, 2008

These vices aren't so easy just to quit.
Whatever affects you in the most negative way, or has the most control over you has to be the one let go of, of course.
But maybe we should all take these vices to the extreme, in order to truly know the true power they have.
Who knows...

Posted: Jun 23, 2008

To my mind the vices are the items - not the act of being addicted to them. Drugs, cigarettes and alcohol are items that man has created - unfortunately humans are vulnerable to items that make them feel better about their lives. Items that numb pain, blot out lack of self esteem and make life seem more livable are easy to become addicted to. Equally trying to "be liked" or "loved" by being promiscuous and being tempted by the lure of "easy money" are human failings borne of a sense of inadequacy or poverty or other - call them a "vice' if you will but I would only go as far as to call them a "weakness".
OK! Sounds like I may have all these problems!! In fact I became addicted to something other and I don't know if anyone mentioned it above but many people are addicted to food and then worse when it turns to compulsive eating, anorexia or bulimia or a mix of eating disorders. Again not so much a vice but a human reaction to comfort grief, pain, fear, abuse, etc.
So there's my slant on a thought provoking article!!

Posted: Jun 23, 2008

Wow, very interesting article and very thought-provoking. I don't think I can even say which I would quit first right now. To me, these are things that you have to dig deep into different aspects in your life, such as: physical health, mental health, religious beliefs, etc. Very good job.

Posted: Jun 23, 2008

Hmm... I dont have any of thoze, but if i did. I would give up, drugs, drukness, and then gambling.

Posted: Jun 24, 2008

Hello Canadian. I've vices galore, this space'd seem inadequate for them.

Sure I don't gamble, smoke, get drunk, do weed, or'm sexual promiscuious or even wield guns.

But I am human and've these vices, which I don't wish to leave. (I am human, after all, remember!)

I am absent-minded, foolish, indecisive, lazy, sensual, stubborn, stupid, vain, weak and wild.

There are many others but I don't wish to bore you and leave them for other day.

I must say this idea is a novel one and it is a wonderful article.

Posted: Jun 24, 2008

My life is full of vices but I don't want to give them up. And no, the above ones are not one of them.

I am "greedy" ( for my mom's love).

And very many similar vices. I hope to get rid of them some day. Pray for me.

Posted: Jun 25, 2008

If there were no vices, how'll we realise the value of virtues. Vices too are essential. Good exists along with bad and life goes on.

I do have many vies but I don't want to list them for I want them to remain private to me.

But thank you an interesting article. And equally interesting responses.

Posted: Jun 26, 2008

Well, in my case, I'm a recovering alcoholic and drug addict. 9 years in AA, now. So, I no longer have the Drunkenness and Drugs as vices. I've never been much a gambler, and now that I realize I can be addicted to pretty much aything, I just stay away from it. I quit smoking several years ago. You could check out my article on my page called "Lightng Up", if you'd like. As for sexual promiscuity, I've been with the same wonderful man for almost 3 years now, and we have a healthy sex life.

The only vice I have, personally, is coffee. If I don't have that cup or two in the morning, I get severe headaches.

I hope I've helped you. You've received some really interesting responses so far!

Posted: Jun 26, 2008

Excellent article. I am too embarassed to write about my vices and I've no virtues. At least I feel that way.

Posted: Jun 27, 2008

definately drugs first then Gambling.

Posted: Jul 16, 2008

I have one vice ,but i wont quit it yet.....kind of need it to live with the stress....
