Manners, politeness, etiquette; whatever name you want to give it, it's a shame it's been added to the endangered species list. I currently work in retail, so, I talk to people on a daily basis. My biggest pet peeve is the lack of manners most of my customers come into the store with. Or should I say "without". I'm not sure if it boils down to stress, the economy, aliens, or whatever. A great many people seem to be lacking in old fashioned politeness towards their fellow man. It takes no energy at all to say, "Excuse Me", "Please", etc. Although I can almost excuse young children for their ignorance to any manners at all due to the fact that they are only taught what their parents teach them. Adults however are another matter entirely. Many is the time I've directed someone to the restroom without so much as a "Thank You" for my trouble. I've lost count on how many times I've been at the register with customers too busy to put their cell phones down long enough to say , "Hello". Technology is great I'll admit, but it doesn't take the place of face to face contact. I know I sound a bit bitter and it's probably due to the fact I've been in customer service way to long for my taste. All I know is that times have changed so much that basic communication that we have taken for granted has slipped away from us and we need to get it back!
Maybe when the economy gets a little better, people will be nicer to each other. Maybe the day will come when people will stop texting and actually talk to each other. Maybe aliens will finally invade the earth. Anyway, if you will excuse me, I need to find a restroom. Thank You.
