Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan
He is referred to as one of the greatest drummers of all time. His work has inspired countless others. this musically gifted person is James Owen Sullivan, better known as "The Rev." He is truly a hero in the music world. The Rev is a hero because he is inspiring, musically gifted, and loved throughout the world.
In 2009, The Rev died from a drug overdose. When he died, his band manager had this to say, "for all of us who loved Jimmy, the only thing relevant about december twenty-eighth is it is a night we lost, too soon, a son, a brother, a friend, and one of the most talented artists in the world." (Buriss 1). To millions, december twenty-eighth is a day we lost one of music's most inspiring, amazing people. The Rev is the most amazing drummer I've ever heard. He is the one who's inspired me to start drumming and there's no doubt that he's inspired countless others. His legacy will live on forever. When The Rev died, the band came out with an album that is completley dedicated to him. In the song, "So Far Away," Synester Gates writes "And the light you left remains but it's so hard to stay, when I have to much to say but you're so far away."(Gates 3). In this quote, i believe the "light" Synester Gates is refering to represents how he's inspried so many people to get into and stay involved in music.
The Rev was a drumming god. The drumset that he played on has twenty four pieces. The fact that he wrote his first drumming piece in seventh grade is amazing. Even more amazing than that is the fact that he took his great passion for music and made a life for himself based on it. He is now and forever will be a world wide known drummer. He dedicated his life to music at a young age and it stayed with him until the very end. He could sing, play drums, and piano. It's hard enough for most people to master one insturnment, let alone three. This is just proof of his extreme musical talent. In an interview following The Rev's death, the band's frontman and lead singer Matty Shadows said, "[Jimmy] Was the guy that everything was built around. He was the centerpiece."
When The Rev died, millions of fans mourned over his death. Obviously, the ones who were hit hardest with his death were his fellow band members. They were bombarded with interviews shortly after his death, and in a tribute video to The Rev that the band made themselves, Matty Shadows said, "He was everyone's best friend, everyone really cared about him. Whenever there's a wedding, everyone wanted him as their best man, he was literally everyone's best friend."(Sevenfold 14). The Rev was definitely a fan favorite and just an all-around crazy guy. Even though it's been almost half a decade since The Rev's passing, any true Avenged Sevenfold fan will tell you that even though he may be gone, he'll never leave. The phrase "foREVer" has become very popular among fans. The band's manager also said in the tribute video, "He was truly one of the warmest human beings you could have ever met."(Sevenfold 15)
It's clear to see that The Rev no doubt had a monumental amount of talent that is unimaginable. He is so inspirational and his legacy and music will continue to touch people for years and years beyond his death. Just because he is no longer physically on this earth does not mean he cannot be seen and felt through his music. The Rev is a hero because he is beyond inspirational, blessed with many musical gifts, and was, and always will be loved by millions.
