Living Through a Novel

Poetry By: Shirleyirie
Editorial and opinion

This poem was written because I saw a tweet from a writer about one of her characters from her latest stories that she published. I personally connected with that character and I just thought, how strange, yet fulfilling it is that we can read and escape, and connect with people who we think are just like us. Even though it's fake. Stories give us escape routes and when we finish reading them it's back to reality, it made me think of one of the many purposes that reading a book serves. Hope you enjoy :)

When you get lost in a book, them words become you're world

And you become a slave to the character, that you wish was you

where you meet the character that speaks how you wish you could

where your house is the castle that your princess lives in, one glance out of your window and the castle amounts to nothing

you're free to leave, this isn't a princess' tower , there's no mighty prince coming, to fight your corner

And the sad reality is, 9 times out of 10, you know your dreams? It doesn't look like you'll live them

Where the man of your dreams, is make believe

And your best friend? Well, she's pretence.

The soul mate that never leaves you hurt, caresses you with words, that you've never even heard

Where the seasons always stick to their word.

A perfect world, that's been written and planned, the world you'll never have.
