In this analysis, I am going to dissect if you will the song "(You Want to Make a) Memory" by Jon Bon Jovi. I will take it one section at a time, provide the lyrics, and tell you what I think they mean. Please, feel free to correct any mistakes in the lyrics, and tell me what you think the lyrics mean! Thank you!

P.S. The lyrics are in bold and my translation is in red.

Hello again, it's you and me
Kinda always like it used to be
Sippin' wine, killing time
Trying to solve life's mysteries

I think that this section of the lyrics means that two people were once very close to each other, then over time they grew apart. Now, they are hanging out like old times and are talking about things that are going on in the world.

How's your life, it's been a while
God it's good to see you smile
I see you reaching for your keys
Looking for a reason not to leave

Here, I think that Jon is saying that one person is glad to see and talk to the other, but the feeling is not mutual. The person that is looking for a reson to leave is probably involved with another person and doesn't feel comfortable with the old friend.

If you don't know if you should stay
If you don't say what's on your mind
Baby just breathe
There's nowhere else tonight we should be

You wanna make a memory?

I put these verses together because I think Jon is asking the other person (probably an old girlfriend that he still has feelinngs for) why she is so anxoius to leave. He is telling her that it is ok for her to speak openly. I'm not sure whta he means by "You wanna make a memory?"

I dug up this old photograph
Look at all that hair we had.
It's bittersweet to hear you laugh
Your phone is ringing I don't wanna ask

Here, I think that Jon is trying to get the girl to remember what they had, and by showing her an old picture of them, he is trying to get her to see that it was a mistake ending the relationship. When her phone rings, I think that Jon knows it is her boyfriend, and doesn't say anything because he doesn't what to know how happy she is (if she is at all) because it might hurt him.

If you go now, I'll understand
If you stay, hey, I've got a plan
We're gonna make a memory
You wanna steal a piece of time
You can sing the melody to me
And I can write a couple of lines

You wanna make a memory?

Here, I know what he is saying..... I think. He is telling the girl that it's ok if she leaves. Of course he doesn't want her to, but he understands that she is with another man, and therefore, he cannot keep her with him. However, he tries in spite of his thoughts and tells her that she can stay if she wishes. I think that the memory is them writing a song together. (I don't want to read too far ino this, though.)

If you don't know if you should stay
And you don't say what's on your mind
Baby just breathe
There's nowhere else tonight we should be
We Should be

This is the same as the first time it was metioned.

You wanna make a memory
You wanna steal a piece of time
You can sing the melody to me
And I can write a couple of lines

You wanna make a memory? (x2)

Same as before.

I hope that this has given you some insite to this beautiful song. Again, I am not saying that this is what the song means, rather what I think it means. I am open to suggestions and your opinion. Thanks agian!
