U.S. Astronaut Love Triangle

Short Story By: EdwardJBradleySr
Editorial and Opinion

This story first appeared in the newspapers and on TV news on or about Monday, February 5, 2007. Below is my blog entry comment which was published "on-line" on a local newspaper website. Blog entries are not published in the newspaper itself.

What do you think about the story about the astronaut charged with attempted murder?

From AP:

She was the Robochick. He was Billy-O. According to police, her obsession with him led her to drive 900 miles from Houston to Orlando, bringing with her a trenchcoat and wig, armed with a BB gun and pepper spray, and wearing a diaper to avoid bathroom breaks on the arduous drive.

Once in Florida, Lisa “Robochick” Nowak apparently confronted the woman she believed was her rival for the affections of William “Billy-O” Oefelein. And this tawdry love triangle has one more twist — it involves two astronauts.

There is a lesson here for all to learn and from which to benefit. If learning such a lesson could help all to avoid such disasters in their own lives. Now and in the future.

The most reprehensible reaction to this tragic and nearly deadly incident has been the behavior of "late night" talk show hosts to lampoon it. This situation is being "played for laughs" with snide and sarcastic remarks which are totally inappropriate and distasteful. Most especially, when the focus is on the deranged and potentially deathly behavior of someone suffering with mental illness. View table of contents...

This incident serves to show just how vulnerable anyone may be to being overtaken by mental illness.  And at any time, during their lifetime.

Increasing the stress on one’s self, by inappropriate behavior (in this case: marital infidelity), can help cause the onset.  Not everyone can be a cold-blooded sophisticate, lacking the emotional vulnerabilities of the normal human being.  Not that this would be something to which to aspire.

Lisa Nowack is a perfect example of someone, though blessed with the gifts of great intelligence, health, strength and determination, was no different or less vulnerable than any other human being on an emotional level.  Her marriage, husband and children were also great blessings in her life.

While she "victimized" her husband and children, by her infidelity, she too may have been "victimized" by her fellow astronaut.

It always amazes me how, otherwise intelligent, people can do such stupid things by indulging and acting on their fantasies.  With the result of risking and losing everything of value they may possess.  History, most certainly, provides us all with numerous examples.  In the end, one must conclude: We are all human and prone to inferior judgement when we allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by our emotions.

very truthful.sad thing is people need to learn to
be happy with what they go because
the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
and could lead to regrets.

This is such a great article Mr. B...I was shocked when the story came out in the news..but, you're so right. We are human, humans make mistakes, and anyone who would make light of the whole tragic event ( and it definitely could have ended much worse ) should be ashamed of themselves !

Eventually, if we live long enough, we may see and/or experience just about anything. Not all of it good.

Happy trails,

Ed Bradley.

It is pretty sad, isn't it that the media use human weaknesses for their own edification (in this case, a poor attempt at humour). Reminds me of the 'funniest videos' shows where people laugh when others are obviously being hurt...I avoid them like the plague. I have as good a sense of humour as the next person but refuse to be drawn in by things like this...Ed, we obviously share the same opinion on this one! Thanks for bringing it to the fore. Annie

Thank you for your supportive and complimentary remarks. Sometimes, I think,: "If it weren't for schadenfreude(sp?) (dark joy/humor/pleasure taken from seeing the suffering of others), there would be no freude(joy) at all.". At least, for many. I can think of some other examples but why bother mentioning them. As it would only serve to feed the appetite of those who enjoy such fare. None of us have to look far or for long to find them. In our everyday lives.

Happier trails,

Ed Bradley.

Loved it Ed. So very true. Those of us who have been victim to marital infidelity know exactly what you are saying. The media these days is much like a pack of hungry wolves. Enjoyed the read. Take care, SN.

Saturday Night:

Thank you for your kind and complimentary remarks. You may wish to revisit this posting to read my response to Annie Legend and others.

Conan O'Brien is among the offenders. On his show, from time to time, he has a hand puppet character called "Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog". The character is coarse, at best, and vulgar, most of the time. A few years ago, the character invaded the Westminister Kennel Club Dog Show to interview the canine entrants. The monologue was, at times, "X" rated. The WKC chased them away for insulting the dogs and their owners. Insufferable snobs, many of them. Conan broadcast the encounter and the public interest in the dog show soared so much that the next year the dog show was televised (live) and Triumph returned as a "special" guest. And does so, every year, now. The public has an "appetite".

A few years ago, Triumph was sent to interview people who were permanently gathered outside the child molestation trial of Michael Jackson. Most were there to support Michael Jackson who was, eventually, found "not guilty". He insulted every person with whom he spoke who was there to show their support for "Jacko". Triumph found a TV newswoman. on break, while spending all her time "on assignment" at the trial. She was young, extremely slender and gave the impression of being not happy with her assignment. Triumph asked her about her diet and why she was drinking just a cup of coffee and no food. After her answer, Triumph said to her, "I guess you people, in the media, have no appetite for food after spending every waking moment of your lives feeding on human misery.". I thought this was so "spot on" and sarcastic I didn't stop laughing for, at least, 2 minutes. Pushing my face in my pillow so as not to awaken my neighbors. I am ashamed, somewhat, as newspaper writing is something to which I aspire and in which I dabble and can claim some success in getting published. Though with much more serious and positive intent. I hope.

Happy trails,

Ed Bradley.

I am being rough on you, Ed, because I am comparing this to your other piece on the English language. This is banal, with no new information and offering no new insights into this sordid affair. You even contradict yourself.

You start by stating the obvious, i.e. that anyone can be overtaken by mental illness during one's lifetime.
Later, you wonder why otherwise intelligent people can do such stupid things by indulging and acting on their fantasies.
The answer, of course, is MENTAL ILLNESS!
Then you conclude with the obvious.

If you wanted to write about the effect of late night shows on this type of behaviour, or why the hosts are driven to crack jokes and make snide comments on these sad case, it might have made very interesting reading.

As it stands it offeres very little to readers interested in the subject.

You may want to go easy on the commas in future. The following sentence reads better without the commas:
"It always amazes me how otherwise intelligent people can do such stupid things by indulging and acting on their fantasies."

You are a good writer, so I shall be reading more of your stuff.

Really nice ^_^ The writing in general was really good and the piece stayed on topic.
Most of all, it was so true, which makes it better than most things.
I might need some more of your works when I have time =)

I very much agree there is a vast difference between wisdom and intelligence, had the woman had wisdom she would probably never have made such a rash decision. for one can be the most intelligent individual in this world, shorn of wisdom are still prone to crass unthinking behavior. Very nice.

Thank you for your most thoughtful comment. Illustrating a crucial point in a much more intelligent and succinct manner than was done by myself. Thank you for the compliment and rating as well.

Happy trails,

Ed Bradley.

It never ceases to amazing me how someone who seems to have it all together can just snap. As you said a mental illness can over take a person at any point in their life. Props to your insight.

In the words of Edward H. Harrimen:
'Much good work is lost for the lack of little more' That's gotta sum up the human condition, just a poor choice for that lady.
