Chapter 9: Max's Temptation
It was 4:23am when I was woken up by a shriek...well, a scream more like! Iquickly looked next to me to see Jen's back arched and her sweating. I was now fully awake, and my only objective was to wake her up from whatever nightmare she was having.
"Jen?" I breathed, putting my hand on her shoulder. "JEN!" I shook her awake, her fightingme off even when she was up. I quickly turned on the light once she had calmed her body down enough to give soft sobs. "Shhh..." I said quietly, winding my arms around her, "Shh, Jen it was just a nightmare, a bad dream..." I held her tighter, kissing the top of her head.
"Oh, Max! It was--the girl told me to turn the monitor off but I couldn't! And-and her claws then the demons that took you away and-" she was crying hysterics and all I could think to do was hold her tight and try to make everything better.
"Baby..." I whispered, moving a stray hair out of her face and kissed her lightly just once. "It was just a n ightmare, Jen...you're okay. We're okay"
Jen hadn't slept since she had woken up, her cheeks still tear-stained. We just lay next to each other for hours staring at each other with the occassional smile. Not one word was spoken, not one inch was moved. I finally willed her to get up and eat breakfast with me, but now all she would do was go through her phone.
"Jay called me 13 times last night...Bailey did 17...what is going on?" she whispered, the beeping of the keypad on her phone echoing through our kitchen.
"Not sure.." was all I could think to mutter. That atmosphere in the room was obnoxious but I didn't want to say anything. I knew how she disliked me intruding her thoughts.
Jen looked up at me and smiled, reaching across the table and stroking my cheek with her thumb. "Thank you.."
"For being the best boyfriend and staying up with me. I love you."
“I love you, too…” my eyes immediately flicked to her phone as soon as she picked it up. “Who are you calling?”
“Jay.” She waited for as the phone rang and I went back to my cereal. I let her have her conversation but when I looked back up her face had paled.
“What happened” I mouthed, but she just shook her head at me and smiled lightly. She put up a finger telling me ‘just one minute’ and continued to listen to whatever he was saying.
“Hey Jay? I’m going to put you on speaker so I can hear you better, okay?” she looked up at me, pausing. “No he went to the shop to get some breakfast.” Then put it on speaker.
Jay had quickly agreed with an ‘okay’ as soon as she did. The next 20 minute story time was shocking to say the least. Liv had left him, and he feared he was in love with another girl while still being in love with Liv. I felt sorry for him. His life was quickly ripping apart at the seams. That was clearly evident with his shaky voice and choke-over tears. It was time I did something.
Despite Jen’s protests I threw my dishes in the sink, grabbed my jacket and left. It was time to reassure myself that life wasn’t as fucked up as it was.
