The bright new-leaf sun shown warmly down upon a budding forest. The crisp breeze ran through the trees, making the newly sprouted grass sway and the last droplets of snow fall from the trees. Feline shapes emerged from behind a bush. Among them, a gray tom tasted the air.
"A beautiful day," he sighed. "Starclan has given us plenty of prey.
The other four cats all nodded in agreement, as they padded toward a large quarry in the middle of the forest. Inside, kits squealed and played under the close supervision of their mothers, apprentices scampered after their mentors, drilling them with questions about training, and warriors fed from the large fresh kill pile. The gray tom approached a flame-colored cat, who sat eating a fat mouse.
"Firestar!" he said to the orange tom. "The dawn patrol checked both borders. Shadowclan and Windclan seem to want to keep the peace. They are not pressing onto our territory. Prey is running fruitfully in the forest."
The orange cat named Firestar purred. "Good! I wish this time of peace could last all season! Graystripe," he called the gray tom, "I have totalk to youlater. I keep getting this strange dream." Firestar padded away and jumped up onto a ledge in the quarry.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join here beneath Highledge for a clan meeting," Firestar called out in a commanding voice.
All the cats looked up from what they were doing and hurried out of their dens toward the ledge on which their leader was sitting.
"Honeykit, would you please come forward?" he called when the whole clan was present.
A small light brown tabby she-cat hurried forward, trembling with excitement.
"I, Firestar, leader of Thunderclan, will declare that from this day forward, until she has earned her warrior name, this apprentice will be called Honeypaw."
He leaned down and touched noses with the young cat. "Brackenfur, please come forward." A large golden tabby tom walked forward with a surprised, but delighted look on his face. "Brackenfur, you have shown Thunderclan that you are loyal and brave. You are determined and strong. May you pass your skills onto this apprentice."
Brackenfur bent down and touched noses with his new apprentice, Honeypaw.
"Honeypaw! Honeypaw!" the assembled crowd chanted.
Honeypaw ran off to talk with her fellow apprentices, pride burning brightly from her pelt. Firestar hopped off of Highledge to congratulate Brackenfur properly.
