That night he preferred not to say anything. He could ruin a perfectly good evening by starting a discussion that might end their relationship. Lying in bed at 3 in the morning, Jimmy thought about the whole experience of having Grace in his life.
Time : about 2 years ago, on a Saturday at 4:00 pm
Place : A coffee shop in New York
Rachel and Grace were sitting at a table, talking while drinking coffee and sharing a cheesecake. Rachel looked happy and was a bit loud, clearly enjoying herself, whereas grace looked incredibly depressed.
"I'm so glad you got to come and visit me. We barely talk since you moved to California," said Rachel.
"Yeah, I know. Sorry about that. I had a lot to do there. I work a lot more hours and I also had to furnish my new apartment. If it makes you feel any better, I hated every second of it."
"If you're miserable ,why did you do it? You could be unhappy here with me but at least we could go out sometimes."
"Maybe I've made a big mistake. I thought I didn't like my job because I couldn't stand my colleagues, but at my new office everybody is nice and interesting and I feel even worse."
"It's not that simple. What's my back up plan? I don't want to end up a homeless person with a law degree, that would be stupid of me."
"You love to cook, maybe you should be a chef."
"For that I would have to go to culinary school, and as you can see I barely have time to visit you."
Rachel didn't answer; instead she just stared at the person who just walked in the little bistro.
"What are you looking at?"
"Guess who just walked in?! That guy, Jimmy Fallon, from Saturday Night Live. Back then, I used to have a huge crush on him. Let's go talk with him!"
Rachel was already on her feet and she was checking her hair and make-up in a little mirror that magically appeared from her purse. Grace grabbed her arm and dragged her back to the chair.
"Sit down!" whispered Grace.
"I know who he is, but I don't think it's polite to harass him."
"Ah, that's right, you watch Late Night. If you can make time for him every day you have earned the right to a little conversation. Please come with me? Please , please, please…"begged Rachel.
"Oh god, you're so annoying when you do that! Fine, I'll go."
With a triumphant smile on her face, she raised her arm and shouted : "Jimmy! Jimmy Fallon!"
Everyone was now looking at her except Jimmy who was listening to music in his earphones. That wasn't enough of a barrier to stop Rachel. She went to his table and tapped him on the shoulder.
"Excuse me, I hope I'm not interrupting anything, but I'm here with my friend and we are both big fans of yours."
Jimmy smiled and simply said: "Sure, we could talk a little, I'm always happy to spend some time with fans."
With that answer, Rachel gave Grace a signal to come and sit down at Jimmy's table. Grace rolled her eyes in disapproval, but got up and carried both their coffees to the other table.
"Hi, I'm Rachel and this is Grace."
Grace shook his hand and apologized for what was happening.
"You have nothing to be sorry for, I like meeting fans of the show, especially if they're cute," he responded while giving her a quick wink.
At that moment, Grace felt a wave of heat on her face. Was she blushing? That would be weird for her.
They all sat down and talked for a while. They laughed a lot too. It was so obvious Jimmy was an entertainer by nature. At some point, the conversation was interrupted by a phone. It was Rachel's.
"No! this can't be happening! My boyfriend needs someone to pick him up from the airport. Apparently his parents had something better to do. It was so nice meeting you but I have to go."
She didn't give them a chance to answer, she just rushed out the door.
"Well this is your chance to go if you want," said Grace, but it was obvious she didn't want him to.
"Actually, if you don't mind I'd like to spend more time with you."
"I'd like that too. The only think I had to do today was to meet Rachel, but she's gone so I'm all yours."
It was stupid to say that. She couldn't believe how nervous she was. "What was going on?" she asked herself. It was so out of character to become giddy like a 13 year old, but there she was with her cheeks red and saying inappropriate things.
They stayed together 'till late at night. At some point they had to order some food. They talked a lot about their lives and Grace learned a lot about Jimmy. He talked about things you can't find out from magazines.
When they finally reached a moment of uncomfortable silence, Jimmy took her hand in his and said:
"I really like you and I hope we could do this again, you know….like a date."
Grace pulled her hand back.
"I'm truly flattered, but I don't go out with married men."
"But I'm not, see?" He showed her his left hand. No ring.
"I'm a fan, remember? I would know if you'd have gotten divorced."
"If your own relationship would fail, would you announce it to the world? I will do that in the near future, but not right now."
"Empty your pockets!"
"What? Why is that important?"
"If your wedding ring is in your pocket, it means that you still wear it and you just put it there because it wasn't to your advantage. Otherwise you would have left it at home."
He obliged. After he put down his phone, wallet, keys and an old receipt…he dropped the simple gold ring on the table. She was afraid of that.
"I know this looks bad, but I promise you it's not like that."
"That's ok, I'm sure you will find another girl in five minutes, and I bet you she will not care about your marital status."
Saying that, she got up, put some money on the table for her share of the check and left. Jimmy thought about following her, but she was right, he was technically married and had no good answer to the question why. It was such a shame that even though that girl intrigued him and he wanted to spent more time with her, she didn't want to have anything to do with him.
