CHAPTER 34: CHARLIE SITUATION
(Jacob Black’s Point Of View)
As I felt the sun’s rays in my eyes, I opened them and looked around. I was in my bed with Renesmee. I had my arms wrapped around her, her back to my stomach with my chin rested on top of her head. I looked at my clock and realized that she only got a couple of hours of sleep, like me. We had Charlie and the police come over. It turned out that Glenn only went down the street, so the police questioned him here so that all of us were in one location.
Renesmee and I told our story and as far as I knew, Glenn was going to stay the night in prison and stay there until someone bailed him out. Renesmee and I only charged him with what he said to us and how he said that he would kill me. I was thinking of getting a restraining order. I wasn’t going to let Renesmee be hurt like that again. With all of the crying that she did, I’m surprised that she hadn’t miscarriage.
Charlie let me call over Esme, Carlisle, EJ, and Edward. Esme would be the one to calm her down, Carlisle was there for medical purposes, and I knew that EJ and Edward would come out of worry.
I knew now that I wouldn’t get much more sleep so I carefully and silently got out of bed and out of the room. I shut the door behind me and I walked over to the phone. It was only eleven so I hoped that he would be up.
I dialed the number and I went outside so that I would have no chance of waking Renesmee.
When I was out, I sat on my steps as I heard the phone ringing. After a couple of rings, he picked up.
“Hello?” Charlie asked in a gruff voice.
“Hey Charlie. It’s Jake calling.” I said.
“Oh, Jacob. Hi. Did things cool down after we left last night?” Charlie asked.
“Yeah. Thanks for everything Charlie.”
“It’s my job.”
“Can you tell me if anyone has bailed him out?”
“Glenn? No. Not that I know. I’ll be in there today. When he is out, I’ll call you.”
“Thanks. I just don’t want another surprise visit.”
Charlie sighed and said, “Jake, where is your father?”
I froze.
“Well…umm…” what was I supposed to say?
“Not only that, but where is Sue. Seth and Leah won’t answer my phone calls and neither will your father.” Charlie said.
“They went up to see Rebecca.” I lied.
“Funny, I called Rebecca’s husband…he says that all of them are still here. He is getting a little worried himself.” Charlie said.
“Did I say Rebecca? I meant Rachel.” I lied trying to sound convincing.
“Jake. I’m not playing around. Did something happen?” Charlie asked.
“No. Charlie, believe me, everything is fine.” I lied.
He sighed.
“Jake. Don’t lie to me.” Charlie said.
“I’m not. Charlie, really, they are with Rachel.” I said, it wasn’t a complete lie, at least I hoped that it wasn’t.
“Jacob, it better not be. I’m getting worried. Tell your father to call me.” Charlie said and he hung up angrily.
I hung up as well and I stared at the phone. After that, I called Sam and he picked up quickly, “Hello?”
“Sam, I think that Charlie knows.” I said.
“What are you talking about?” Sam demanded.
“I mean that we were on the phone and he was asking me where Billy and the others were.” I said.
“What did you tell him?”
“That they were with Rachel in her house.”
He groaned.
“He can’t know.” Sam said.
“How can we get him off our trail. We can’t let him in on this.” I said.
There was a pause.
“Maybe we can.” Sam said.
“What are you talking about Sam?” I asked, “Charlie could die if he knows. The Volturi will find out easily, especially since we are working with them.”
“But he won’t if he only learns about us.” Sam said.
I gasped a little.
“Sam…no.” I said.
“We might need a cop. You never know. And maybe this will get him to leave us alone.”
“No it wouldn’t! Are you an idiot! He would only question us more!”
I realized I was yelling and I looked over at my house. When I heard nothing from it, I hoped that my wife was still asleep. I sighed and said, “no.”
“I’m the alpha Jacob. We might not need Charlie now, but later. Also, if he gets too involved himself then we might not have a choice.” Sam said.
“That’s a bad alpha decision.” I told him.
“But it’s mine. I’m choosing this Jacob.” Sam said.
“No. You won’t. I won’t let you endanger anyone else’s life.” I said.
Sam hung up. I almost crushed my phone in my hand. No, I was supposed to be the real alpha. He might be mine, but he was meant to follow me. I won’t have him hurting anyone else.
“Jake?” Renesmee asked.
I was so angry that I didn’t hear her coming up to the door and opening it. I looked up at her and she sat down beside me holding her stomach.
“What is it?” she asked, “I heard you yelling.”
I sighed and she then rested her head on my shoulder.
“Sam wants to get Charlie involved.” I said coldly.
Her head went off of my shoulder and she stared at me.
“No.” she whispered.
“I know. I was talking to Charlie before I called Sam and he is starting to worry why Billy or Sue or anyone else for that matter hasn’t talked to him for so long.” Jacob said.
She went pale.
“Renesmee, I haven’t told you that I am supposed to be the real alpha.” I said.
“Then why aren’t you?” she asked.
“Well, at first I didn’t want the responsibility. Also, he phased first.” I answered.
She stared at me.
“Renesmee, I don’t want to cause a fight, but I won’t allow Sam to make reckless decisions. If I have to, I will have to try and rise up against him.” I explained.
She kissed me and told me in s serious voice, “I trust your decision and I know that you won’t purposely hurt others.”
I kissed her again and she said, “do what you have to do.”
