CHAPTER 36: LAST TIME
(Fred’s Point Of View)
I was so thirsty. I was sure that my throat was on fire. I couldn’t even open my mouth or else I would loose it. Haylynn and I were on the other side of the basement and the others knew well enough to stay away from us. I could see the fear on their faces. A couple of times, the kids would come over, but I would have to be silent for them.
I felt disgusted that Irina would take children. It was even worst that they would leave them in the basement with Haylynn and I. I knew that the others would protect the kids first, but if Haylynn and I lost it then all of them wouldn’t live. It was hard enough to keep control now. Once a single drop of blood was seen then it was done.
I was more worried about Haylynn then myself. She was more of a newborn then I was. I had more control. This was going to be harder for her then me.
And what scared me was when I was looking into her eyes. She was angry. She wanted the blood.
So when the door opened, everyone looked. For the past couple of days, everyone has been getting small scraps of food except for Haylynn and I. I opened it to see another guard there. He passed down a bag of sandwiches and shut the door again. Haylynn growled and I placed a hand on her shoulder. She saw my look and stopped. I knew that it wasn’t fair, but we had to keep our control. No matter how good everyone smelled. Even though I wasn’t breathing there was always a small scent of everyone.
As I watched them all eat I was thinking of my sister. I couldn’t loose Shauna Leigh. I just got my sister back. I didn’t want to loose her, but I was ready to fight for her life. I would gladly give myself in to Irina if she allowed my sister to leave and stay safe and Irina would never go after her again. I was thinking on doing that now, but then I had Haylynn to take care of.
When I closed my eyes to relax I thought about Shauna Leigh. She looked so grown up and she acted like it too. I could remember the fun times as kids that we would do in Seattle. She trusted me with her life. When she was four she would let me take her around Seattle. I was older, but she still trusted me. I loved my little sisters. Both of them. I couldn’t imagine if I lived to tell this tale and Shauna Leigh didn’t.
So when Haylynn growled again I opened my eyes to see her in a crouching position. She was glaring at the others. I saw all of them frozen. Billy had his daughters behind him and the others had a child.
“Haylynn.” I warned her.
She then glared at me. I knew that now this was it for her. She wouldn’t last any longer. Her instincts were going to take full control of her any second.
“Go into the far corner. Now.” I ordered them.
I stood up in front of her as they all were doing so and I said to her, “No. Stay there. Don’t do this to yourself Haylynn. Be strong.”
“I don’t want to hurt you Fred.” She told me.
“Keep control Haylynn. You don’t want to do this.” I told her.
“How can you stand it?”
“I can’t.”
“Then help me.”
“No. I won’t let you hurt them.”
She stared at me. Though her face was angry her eyes were upset.
“I can’t. I can’t.” she whispered.
“Only look at me.” I told her.
She did so before she looked behind me and said to the others, “I am so sorry.”
She jumped to my side but I pounced on her.
We collided with the wall and I held her there, her arms beside her head. She was snarling at me. I could hear the kids screaming in fear as everyone else tried to calm them down. When I looked at my girlfriend the person who I loved I knew that I had lost her. Unless she got blood she wasn’t going to go into a state of mind that I could talk to her.
There was no hope for her.
“Haylynn please don’t make me do this.” I begged hoping that there might just be something.
There was nothing in her eyes. Nothing. She was gone.
“Please.” I begged.
When I saw nothing I knew what I had to do. I didn’t want to do it, but it was a matter of survival.
“I love you. I’m sorry.” I told her.
To end her snarls I grabbed her around the throat. I knew that if I could cry that I would be sobbing.
