CHAPTER 59: AFTER THE LONG NIGHT

(Renesmee Black’s Point Of View)

I woke up at around six o’clock when the babies began kicking me. I held down my moan when I saw that Jacob was still sleeping. After last night, he deserved some sleep. He’s been beyond stressed lately and he has needed to catch up on his sleep.

It was fifteen minutes later when the kicking stopped and I sighed with relief. I then looked at Jacob again. He would be too tired to go to work today and I knew that. He knew that too.

So I turned around and I unplugged the clock so that everything on their would be saved, but the alarm wouldn’t go off. This way Jacob could sleep in. He needed to catch up on his sleep not only for all of these weeks waking up while still having those pills, but because we were up till almost three in the morning last night. He was going to be way too tired tonight. It was a Wednesday and Jacob said that it was one of the normal days so they would need a person to cover for his shift.

I looked over at my husband. I had seen the worry and water in his eyes last night. I knew how it felt to have family members being held hostage. I’ve had my entire family in there and now Jacob did. I knew the pain that he was in and I knew how it felt to want them back home.

I could see the bags under his eyes as he slept soundly and peacefully. The sun hadn’t even come up yet so it was still dark. I sighed and put the light cautiously on low. Once I was done I quickly looked over my shoulder at Jacob to see that he was still sound asleep. I sighed with relief then relaxed in a comfortable position.

Although it was only six o’clock I couldn’t get up off the bed and go downstairs to get the phone on my own or without Jacob hearing me.

“Edward?” I whispered so it wouldn’t wake Jacob, “Edward?”

I knew he would hear me. He was good enough to hear me.

A couple of seconds later my door open softly. I looked to see Edward there. He gave me a small smile and looked at me.

“Can you carry me downstairs so that I can make a phone call?” I asked him.

He nodded and came beside me. Carefully he picked me up and silently took me out of the room. I looked over Edward’s shoulder to see that Jacob was still asleep. Edward left the door open so that there wouldn’t be a risk of it making any noise. He silently took me downstairs. As we entered the living room Edward was silent again.

I saw that Claire were on one couch while Leah was on the other. Beth and Jessie were in the cribs and Sam was sleeping in a sleeping bag beside them. Paul was in the other sleeping bag as well. Seth, Embry, Brady, Collin, and Quil were sharing three mattresses laid beside each other that they brought back from their own houses. Carlisle and Esme provided the blankets, pillows, and covers. Since vampires didn’t need to sleep they weren’t in the pile at the room.

Edward led me into the kitchen where he then shut the door and he set me on the chair. I thanked him and as he grabbed me the phone I asked him, “where are the others?”

“Hunting. All of them. They thought that it would be better to go in a large pack so that it would be harder for them to get attacked.” Edward whispered back.

I nodded and then quickly searched my mind to remember Jacob’s workplace. He gave it to me to call if I needed him while he was at work since he wasn’t allowed to have his cell-phone on and everything. Once I remembered it I dialed the number and began to rethink about how I was going to explain this story before I started dialing the number. I would have to think on the spot now.

“Hello?” the man on the other end of the phone asked.

“Hello. This is Renesmee Black. I’m Jacob’s wife.” I explained in a low voice that still sounded normal.

Edward got out a loaf of bread and when I saw it I nodded excitedly and Edward smiled as he then got out some raspberry jam and normal peanut butter for me.

“Oh yes. I’m his boss. Is there something that I can help you with?” the man asked.

“Um…I know that this is really late and everything, but I was doing a couple of doctor appointments in other states yesterday and Jacob’s truck stalled for a couple of hours. We didn’t finally get home until about three this morning. Again I know that this is all last minute, but I just wanted to ask to see if Jacob could have the day off.” I asked him.

“Oh…you are right. That is last minute.” The man sighed and went silent.

“I’m sorry. I just woke up myself and Jacob is still asleep.” I said.

“Oh…it’s okay. Yeah Jacob can have the day off. If he needs to then he can have tomorrow off too.” The man promised.

“Thanks. I promise to try and call earlier the next time something like this happens.” I told him.

“Don’t worry about it. Jacob is a good and hard worker. He deserves a day off. By the way how are you doing?” The man promised.

“You mean my pregnancy? Yeah I am fine. It’s Jacob who is more stressed than me.” I said and Edward gave me two peanut butter and jam sandwiches.

I smiled and he kissed my forehead and sat at the other end of the table. He watched me and the man told me, “yeah. I’ve offered to give Jacob a couple of days or at least some hours, but he insists. He seems to want to get a lot of money so that he can support me.”

“That’s Jacob.” I sighed.

“Anyway yes it’s okay that Jacob has the day off. He needed one anyway and I’m glad that you are okay.” The man said.

“Thanks.” I said and we both hung up.

I immediately put the phone down and grabbed the first sandwich and took a large bite into it. Edward chuckled and I smiled.

“Are you feeling okay?” Edward asked.

“Yeah. I feel good.” I answered and took another bite of my sandwich.

“Your down another month.” Edward told me.

I looked at him.

“Oh yeah. That’s right!” I said and I looked at my stomach.

“Have you and Jacob thought about names yet?” Edward asked.

“Nope.” I said proudly and I took another bite of my sandwich.

He chuckled at that.

“You are going to have to start to think about that.” Edward said.

“Yeah I know. But how are Jacob going to agree on eight girl names then eight boy names and weigh them on the scale of one to eight. Yeah. I highly doubt it.” I laughed.

Edward nodded.

“Can you get me some water please?” I asked him.

Another second later a glass of water was in front of me. I smiled and took it as he was suddenly in his chair.

“Thanks.” I said.

“Um…Renesmee. I know that it is a couple of months early, but some of us were thinking about giving you and Jacob a big baby shower.” Edward said.

I nodded and thought about it.

“I guess.” I said.

“Esme and Rosalie were planning it so that it happens next month. It’ll be closer to the due date and this way you will also be more prepared.” Edward said.

I nodded and sighed.

“Can I eat this later? I’m tired.” I sighed.

Edward nodded.

“I’ll tell Esme and the others when they come back from their hunt.” Edward said.

I nodded and Edward came over to me again. He held me like he did before and I then carried me silently back into my room. Jacob was still asleep and didn’t even move yet. Edward kissed me one more time before leaving the room and shutting the door.

I relaxed again and I then moved so that I was looking at my husband. I sighed and went off into sleep again.

*

I was woken up by moving around in my room. A drawer shut and I heard rapid breathing. I opened my eyes to see Jacob quickly getting clothes on. He was rushing and I could see the anger on his face. I looked at the clock to see that it was almost noon. No wonder Jacob would be worried without an exclamation.

“Jake? Settle down.” I told him as I slowly sat up.

“Settle down?! Renesmee I am so late!” Jacob growled with anger that I’ve never seen him do before, “Why did you unplug the clock!”

“Jacob I called your boss. You have the day off.” I explained.

He froze and looked at me. His anger immediately fell and he looked shocked.

“What?” Jacob asked.

“I woke up at six and you were sound asleep from last night so I went downstairs and called your boss. I told him that I had a hospital thing in another state and we had car trouble and that we didn’t get home until around three and that you were still sleeping. He understood.” I told him.

He then finished hooking on his pants before he sat down on the bed.

“You called my boss?” he asked.

“Yeah. You needed some time to catch up on your sleep and to relax.” I told him.

Jacob smiled and then crawled over the bed and to me. He held me as well as he could before kissing me. I kissed him back before he laid me back down.

“Oh honey. Thank you. You didn’t need to do that.” Jacob said.

“You needed the day off and your boss agreed. He even said that if you wanted tomorrow off that he would let you.” I told him.

Jacob chuckled.

“I think that today will be enough, but thank you honey.” Jacob told me.

I smiled and he kissed me again. Jacob then kissed my forehead and said, “I’m guessing you’re hungry right?”

I giggled and he laughed.
