Nick’s POV
“The worst day of my life?” I repeated Jill’s question. “The day I thought we were over. When you had that fight with your parents, and I walked in on you and Joe. Then, I chased you in the rain. When you told me the kiss with Joe confused you too much to tell me if you loved me, my heart probably stopped for a few seconds.”
“Really? That was probably the worst day of my life too. Or, at least the most confusing,” Jill smiled, interlocking her fingers with mine. I stared at her ring. Joe and Kevin helped me pick it out, but Jill didn’t know that. It was December 23rd, and our wedding rehearsal was tonite. Jill said that ever since she was a little girl, she wanted to get married on Christmas Eve. When I proposed to her last Valentine’s day, we wanted to get married on the beach, but our parents insisted that we get married in a church.
Just then, my niece and nephew popped up out of nowhere. Molly and Ryan, who were three and a have, were Kevin and Heather’s twins. Kevin and Heather were dog shopping and asked Jill and I to babysit. How perfect was that? His kids were getting a puppy for Christmas.
“Aunt Jilly,” Molly said. Jill always smiled when they called her aunt Jilly. They had always called her aunt Jilly, but now she’d really be their aunt. “When will my mommy and daddy be home?”
“Uh, Nick? When will Kevin and Heather be home?” Jill asked. I checked my phone to see the time. It was noon. In 24 hours, I’d be marrying Jill.
“They’ll be home in an hour, Mol,” I said.
“An hour?” Ryan whined.
“Everyone is trying to talk to Santa Clause,” Jill said. It is Christmas Eve. Hey, I know what we could do..”
“ What Aunt Jilly?” the twins said simultaneously.
“Yea, Aunt Jilly, tell us,” I smiled. She grabbed a pillow and two Cherrios.
“I think our little ring bearer needs to practice,” Jill said. She placed the Cheerios on the pillow and put the pillow in Ryan’s hands. He practiced walking and balancing the rings. Then, he carefully placed the pillow on the floor and ate the Cheerios. Jill and I laughed.
“Ryan, don’t scare us like that, man. You can’t eat the rings tomorrow,” I laughed.
“So, molly, you are my flower girl. What kind of flowers should we pick?” Jill asked.
“Hmmm,” Molly thought for a second. “Roses….and,….. Daisies!”
“That sounds-” I started.
“Perfect, absolutely perfect,” Jill leaned in and kissed me on the cheek.
“Eww,” the twins whined.
“Eww,” I mocked them. Just then, my cell phone rang.
“It’s Frankie,” I told jill as ryan yawned.
“I’ll go put them down for a nap,” Jill grabbed Molly & Ryan’s hands and led them down the hall. I was 22 and Jill was 23. We weren’t too young, I knew we were in love for real.
