Chapter Fifteen - Nick

I got ready and walked to Jill’s yard. I saw her sitting on the edge of the pool, her feet in the water. She had on a white bikini with purple polka dots.

“Day-um,” I joked. Jill rolled her eyes and smiled. I cannon balled into the pool. Jill shrieked as she was splashed by the cold water. She had a huge pool. Half of it was deep and the other half was shallow. She slowly slid into the pool.

“Wanna race?” she asked. I looked at her, puzzled. “I was on the swim team.” She swam to the other end of the pool and I followed her. There was just one problem.

“Jill, I can’t swim. I mean, I can swim. But I can’t “swim”,” I told her. “You’re going to beat me.”

“Come on, Nick. Just try. I’ll go easy on you,” Jill smiled as she grabbed the wall with one hand. Her feet pressed against the wall.

“Alright, what kind of swimming?” I asked.

“You mean stroke?” she corrected. I nodded. “Freestyle, let’s start with that.”

“Okay, I’ll do it. There and back, let’s try it.” I said, trying to convince myself I wouldn’t look like an idiot. We raced. I pretended to swim. I watched as Jill sped across the pool. She flipped at the wall, so perfectly, so precise. Jill laughed when we finished.

“You didn’t even try,” she said.

“I was too busy watching you. That was amazing,” I told her.

“Oh, please. I’m just warming up,” she informed me.

“That thing you did, the turny thing, what was that?” I asked, intrigued.

“Flip turn,” she told me. “ It took me two years to perfect that.”

“Well, it’s amazing. Your technique is amazing,” I said as if I knew what I was talking about.

“Trust me, that’s beginner stuff. Want to see my favorite stroke?” she asked. I nodded as she got into position again. She took of and swam two laps of a stroke I didn’t know the name of. Her arms circled around her body and her legs moved like a mermaid.

“Butterfly,” she said, stretching her arms. We were standing in the shallow end. I pulled her torso closer to mine. My lips touched against hers. I carefully lifted her body up to the edge of the patio. Her legs dangled in the water. My hand pressed against her neck as her arms draped around my shoulders.

“I make all this effort to win you back, only to watch you make out with this fag?” we heard an angry voice.

“Oh shit, it’s Jason,” Jill murmured as she quickly stood up and ran to Jason. She slapped him across the face, hard.

“Just because he’s not a pig like you, that doesn’t make him a fag!” she screamed.

“Look, Jill, he’s just a pretty boy. I’m giving you one last chance to take me back,” he said sternly.

“No, never,” Jill replied.

‘Jill, what do you want me to do? Join a little boy band? Learn to play the guitar, because it’s so difficult? Or, how about I get a pretty boy ring? Will that turn you on, Jill?” Jason said angrily. Jill shoved him in the chest. I quickly hopped out of the pool. This guy was getting on my nerves. There was no way he was going to treat Jill like this.

“Watch out, Jill. I got this,” I said, more to myself then Jill.

“Oh shit, I’m scared now,” Jason said sarcastically.

“Leave Jill alone, okay? Face it, Jason, she’s not going to take you back,” I yelled at him.

“Like hell she won’t!” Jason yelled back. I punched him in the face.

“Leave, right now. Just go away, Jason,” Jill screamed.

“Jill, you’re going to regret this. You know you still love me!” Jason yelled as he left the yard.

“God, I can’t believe him!” Jill cried.

“I can understand why he wouldn’t want to let you go,” I whispered softly in her ear.

“It’s not like he’ll have any trouble finding some slut to date him,” Jill said. Just then, her mom appeared at the back door.

“Honey, come inside. I have a surprise for you. You’re not going to believe this!” her mother looked ecstatic. Jill slipped her shorts and tee shirt back on as we went into the house. There was a woman sitting on the couch with a metal crate on the floor in front of her. In it were two overweight multi-colored cats. Jill’s face lit up instantly.

“Babies! You’re back!” she screamed, running to the crate. “ I missed you so much!” Tears streamed down her face. I realized there was so much I didn’t know about Jill. I was definitely willing to learn, though. Jill was amazing.
