Chapter 24 - Nick
I walked into the family room to see my mother, Joe, and Kevin sitting on the couch.
“Nick, honey, come sit down. I need to talk to you,” my mom said. I knew something was wrong.
“What is it?” I asked, sinking into the couch.
“Jill’s great Uncle Wally is dieing,” she said.
“That’s terrible,” Joe said.
“Her parents are flying to Chicago to visit him. Jill and Mitch are going to stay with us for a few days. And Nick, if he dies, Mr. Croft was hoping you could fly out there with Jill and Mitch,” she said.
“Sure,” I replied. Joe got a weird look on his face.
“Thanks, hon. You’re really helping Jill out. Just help her stay strong,” my mother said, kissing me on the head. She headed upstairs. Joe looked at Kevin and whispered something in his ear.
“Nick, I need to tell you something,” Joe said cautiously. “ I kissed Jill Saturday night.”
“What!?” I yelled.
“People make mistakes, Nick. I’m sure it was an accident,” Kevin said softly.
“You knew about this?” I asked.
“Yeah, but they promised not to do it again. They weren’t going to tell you,” he replied.
“I didn’t mean to, Nick. It just happened,” Joe said.
“Just don’t let it happen ever again. I can’t be mad at Jill right now. Please leave her alone while she’s here,” I pleaded.
“I know, I will. Jill’s really amazing, Nick. Try not to mess it up with her,” he instructed.
“She’s definitely amazing,” I said. I straightened up the guest room for Jill. Mitch would sleep on the bottom bunk of Frankie’s bunk bed. Friday morning, at ten o’clock, there was a knock at the door. It was Jill with Mitch and her dad. She looked absolutely devastated.
