I couldn't believe that Ryan attacked me. I couldn't believe I
didn't see it coming.
All I could do was scream with agony and fear. One minute
everything was dark and dim and the next everything was vivid. It
was all too vivid, the pain and my surroundings. The arms around
me, the slippery substance I was lying in. I was drowning in
thick seeping heat.
Sudden movements shocked me, forcing an involuntary shriek to
escape my mouth. I kept shrieking until the sound scared me. I
arched my ruined back and shut my eyes against the tears. The
dripping heat felt like it was burning through my ragged flesh.
Someone stuffed their arm into my mouth and I sank my teeth into
it, desperately attempting to stifle my screeching. A burst of
heat and pain exploded within me as a hand violently stuffed
something into my wound. I'd found myself in the very pits of
"Amber please don't scream its killing him, oh God no you
can't close your eyes though! Listen to me, stay awake damn it."
I couldn't fight the blackness and the stranger's voice was
wrong. I knew it was wrong. I had to sleep so it didn't hurt
anymore. When I slipped into nothing there was no screaming and
no noise. There was no burning heat or explosions of agony
ripping through me.
I felt myself leaving the scene slowly but surely. I closed my
eyes against the harshness of the world and waited as the pain
ebbed away. I was swallowed by the merciful gift of
A hand didn't leave go of mine. It was comforting and
recognizable to have such a hot hand holding my own. I'm happy
it's the last thing I remember. But before I slipped away I heard
the sob of a girl crying.

I was awake. I couldn't distinguish voices from noise. Swift
shocks of icy cold touched me. Freezing hands slid over the
warmth of blood. They searched for something but they couldn't
find it. I think they wanted to find where I was bleeding from
the most. I tried to move and show them. I couldn't move.
It was like I wasn't a person anymore. I wasn't Amber. I was a
bleeding human body. All I could think of was my injuries. I
couldn't even be scared about what was happening.
"Amber I can read your mind okay? I can hear what you're
thinking," a voice said.
I'm bleeding to death, I thought, I'm going to die.
"You might not die. You might survive."
I already know that. I...I can't think. I can't remember things.
It's like I know it's scary but I can't be scared.
"I don't want you to be scared."
I want to remember things.
"You can if you try. Think around the pain. Think of Kyle."
A thousand memories swam around inside my aching head, faster
than I thought possible. I saw me and Kyle walking too slowly to
keep up with the pack running in front. I saw us around the
roaring fire late at night. I saw us sleeping on the ground, him
in his gigantic wolf form. I saw his face the way it was the
first time I met him. I saw his face smiling at me like he'd
always known me. As though he'd forgotten we'd never spoken to
each other, ever.
I saw Ryan's face. I saw when we first met, when I'd run away
from home and was sleeping on the street and stealing food. I saw
him trying to hint to me that he was a wolf, so I'd guess before
his pack had to move on and leave me behind. I guessed in the
end. I saw him telling the pack I knew and he wanted me to travel
with them. I saw his face when Kyle told him he'd imprinted on
me. I saw his face when I left him for Kyle. I saw his face
before he attacked me.
I felt my heart slowing and I knew it was failing. I was
frightened and desperate but I couldn't move, I couldn't shout...
"Her heart's failing-"
Make sure you tell Kyle I love him, I thought frantically. I
knew somewhere right then Kyle was just as frantically trying to
