Eli sat in the cool dampness of his cave, imagining flying pigs and free candy. His daydreams almost seemed real, like he could reach out to them. Of course, he could not. It was only his imagination. A flying pig swooped down and dropped lollipops into the grass. Eli ran to them, but suddenly his favorite being, a vampire, jumped out. At first he was frightened, but then he smiled. His loved vampires.

He pondered over these so called creatures day and night. His parents would scowl at him whenever he asked.

"They are horrid beasts", his father would say. "Do not ask any further; they could hear you."

His father always seemed to look sad when speaking of vampires. Eli didn't know why. He didn't know a lot of things. In fact, he and his family were the only rainicorns he had ever seen. Actually, he had never even seen himself. Not even his horn, which was said to be the most important part of any rainicorn.

"Can we go into the sunlight sometime?" he asked his parents as they were sitting at the dinner table, eating who knows what.

"No", his mother, Fuzztruffles, answered sharply. "Besides, this cave, if you ask me, is perfect the way it is."

"There are liches out there", his father said sternly. "Do you want to get caught by a lich?"

"No", Eli answered. "But you always go out there. You never get caught by liches. I just want to go once..."

"Again, no", Fuzztruffle replied, getting angry. "Once you do, you'll want to keep going back. Then you'll get sick and die."

Eli finished his food without saying a word. He didn't agree with his parents, but he knew that someday he would be allowed to live on his own.

But for now, he could only dream about it.
