Toby's night begins a little earlier than Mr. Todd's.
As Mrs. Lovett leaves him in the bake house, he eagerly makes his way to the meat pie rack against the wall. He looks for the thickest and most golden pie, and takes a hefty bite out of it. He's so excited to finally have the chance to learn how to make the pies after all of this time. He feels so bad for her always having to come up and down the stairs to the wretched smelling cellar.
He's so glad that Mrs. Lovett got new meat for the pies. The ones that he first tasted, while delicious to a starving boy, wouldn't have been as appealing if Signore Pirelli had fed him on a regular basis instead of every two or three days.
As Toby slowly chews Mrs. Lovett's succulent meat pie and eagerly awaits her return, he looks around the bake house. He desires to familiarize himself with the dreary setting that he'll be spending so much time in in the future. He suddenly bites into something that doesn't taste or feel like the meat that he's become so used to in the pies. Pulling the pie away from himself, he digs the stray bit of fat stuck between his teeth.
Only, it isn't fat.
Much to his terror and disgust, Toby pulls a toe out of his mouth. A human toe. Shocked, he takes a second, more close glance around the cellar. He had initially believed the pile of bones in the corner to belong to the animals used for the meat pies, but they don't belong to any animals. A closer examination reveals that they are in fact human remains that had been stripped of all of their skin and meat and haphazardly covered with a grey sheet.
Growing more alarmed by the second, Toby slowly approaches the bin that meets him eye to brim. He looks over the edge and finds the chopped up remains of unskinned humans. Ready to vomit, he reaches in, sure that this is just a joke or a twisted nightmare. He pulls out the very real hand of another man, and it all becomes real for him.
Just as what Mrs. Lovett has done dawns on him, a trap door opens a few feet away. He's shocked to see the tubby body of Beadle Bamford fall head first into the cellar. His skull cracks on the stone floor, and blood trails out of that wound and his slit neck. Toby drops the hand and gasps. Horrified, he scurries to the door.
"Let me out!" he commands finding to his dismay and terror that it's locked. "Please, let me out!" He bangs anxiously and urgently on the door, willing for Mrs. Lovett to return and release him.
Surely there's an explanation, he rationalizes in his mind. Surely Mrs. Lovett, the woman he's come to think of as a mother, couldn't be responsible. No! It's all Mr. Todd's fault! Mrs. Lovett will be back soon, and when she returns, he'll tell her that she doesn't have to be afraid of that demon any longer. He'll tell her that he can fight Mr. Todd off, that they can run away where Mr. Todd will never find them. If Signore Pirelli's wallet wasn't enough, Mr. Todd is clearly responsible for the death of the Beadle. There's no one else to blame, and no other explanation. If Mrs. Lovett has known about this all along, it's no wonder that she's too scared to fight Mr. Todd and that she would go along with his plot! It even makes sense why she would pretend to be so infatuated with him! She needed to stay on his good side for the sake of her own survival.
Mrs. Lovett is like Toby's mother now, and he must protect her from that evil man.
"Let me out!" Toby cries again, turning away from the door and looking around the cellar. Beadle Bamford's hat joins his body now, sitting on top of his plump belly.
Toby has to find a place to hide. He can't run down the sewer tunnel-it'll make too much noise, and if Mr. T comes looking for him, he'll be caught and killed for sure. There's a pot hole on the ground near the Beadle's body. Toby thinks that he can slip down it and hide until he's sure that the coast is clear. He hears footsteps on the stairs and is forced to make a decision.
Just as the cellar door opens, Toby falls into the disgusting sewer and covers it with the pothole.
"Toby?" Mrs. Lovett calls. Sure that everything will be alright, he almost comes out of hiding. And then he hears her whisper, "Where is he?"
Toby's eyes widen. She set him up! She betrayed him! It doesn't take a genius to figure out that she sold him out to Mr. T so that she would be saved. Not that he can blame her. Despite his brave words, Mr. Todd terrifies Toby, but that's beside the point. He trusted her-he called her 'mom,' and this is what he gets.
He hears Mr. Todd and Mrs. Lovett making their way through the cellar. "Toby!" she calls gently. "Where are you, Love?"
"Toby?" Mr.T calls as they pass over Toby's pothole. He quickly recedes into the shadows in case they look down the grate.
"Nothing's gonna harm you, not while I'm around," Mrs. Lovett says reassuringly, trying to lure him out. But he won't buy it any longer.
"Toby!" He can hear Mr. Todd growing increasingly impatient, and he recalls the urgent letter he had him deliver. It said that some girl named Johanna was there and that she had tricked some sailor that had tried to rape her. He told the judge that she needed him and for him to get to the barber shop immediately. He must still be waiting for Judge Turpin to arrive.
"Where are you hiding?" Mrs. Lovett demands playfully. "Nothing's gonna harm you darling, not while I'm around."
Mr. Todd's patience has diminished. "Toby!" He can now barely mask his irritation.
"I'll keep looking for him, Mr. T," Mrs. Lovett says after a few moments. Her voice echoes through the cellar and into the sewer. "You go upstairs and wait for the judge. I'll bring him up to the shop as soon as I find him."
Mr. Todd hesitates. "Alright. Do not disturb me until the judge has fallen." His voice is low and threatening, and Toby trembles.
"Yes, Mr. T."
Toby hears Mr. Todd storm back through the sewer, over the pothole, and out of the cellar. He quietly sighs with relief and leans his head against the cold, dirty wall of the sewer. He almost wishes that he was back in the work house again. If he was, he'd be sound asleep by now, lulled to sleep by the gentle caress of gin.
Saddened by the thought, he sighs again, barely taking not that Mrs. Lovett's footsteps are getting father and farther away. Toby hears the sound of another body falling on the ground, and he quickly pokes his head out to check. It's the old beggar woman from the corner.
He remembers her desperate warning to tell the Beadle and police about the stench from the chimney. But he was so blinded by his loyalty to Mrs. Lovett, he simply blew it off! Now, thinking back to her reaction to the woman entering the pie shop, he has second thoughts. He should've listened more closely to what the old woman was saying! And now it's too late-now, Mr. Todd has killed her.
As Toby gazes wistfully at the poor old woman's body, he hears Mrs. Lovett approaching quickly. Without thinking, he dives back into the darkness and lets the pothole clatter back into place. Toby doesn't dare move even though he isn't that far into the shadows. He gulps and waits for her to come find him. This is it-he either has to fight her or let her take him to Mr. T once the judge is dead.
Mrs. Lovett walks directly to Toby's hiding place. Toby gulps as he waits for her to say something. For a moment, she just gazes down at him through the grates. Her eyes are sad and scared. She also looks a bit…uncertain. She doesn't know what to do, and Toby doesn't dare say a word.
"Stay down there, boy. Don't say anything, and don't move. Mr. T'll be back soon, and it'll be off with both of our heads if he finds you down there. Wait 'til it's dark, and then run. Don't ever return."
Toby is shocked and can't say anything. He just nods and backs further into the shadows as Mrs. Lovett rises and wipes her skirt, looking around anxiously. They hear Mr. T screaming from above.
"Wait, mum!" Toby calls out before she can go anywhere. She kneels back down by the grate as they hear another body fall, no doubt that of the judge.
"Yes darling?" she asks nervously and quietly.
It takes Toby a moment to word his thoughts. Finally, he asks with tears in his voice, "Why did you do it? Why did you help him?"
"Oh, Toby, dear. There's so much more to it than you can understand, but what it really comes down to is that I needed him as much as he needed me. And I love him dearly."
"But why, mum?"
"One day, you'll understand." She looks off distantly and wistfully. Finally she shakes it off. "Goodbye, love. Good luck." With that, she rises and turns to Mr. Todd's victims.
Toby hears Mrs. Lovett let out a blood-curdling shriek, and he almost emerges. But he knows that Mr. Todd will soon return, and he wouldn't have time to hide again. He simply resides further into the shadows and hopes that she's not in too much trouble.
"Die!" She screams, probably to the judge since he would've fallen onto two soft bodies instead of the cold stone floor. "God in Heaven, die!" It's silent for a moment, and then he hears her whisper, "You!"
The door opens, and Toby begins trembling, terrified that Mrs. Lovett will go back on her word and reveal his hiding place. "Why did you scream?" Mr. Todd demands.
"Oh, he was clutching onto my dress," she replies in a strange voice. Toby wonders if all of this blood and death has finally driven her mad. "But he's finished now."
"I'll take care of it," Mr. Todd commands. Toby hears his footsteps getting close to them all. "Open the door." Mr. Todd shoves her away. "Open the door, I said!" His voice is impatient.
Mrs. Lovett walks away, and Toby hears her slowly open the heavy oven door.
"'Don't I know you?' she said," Mr. Todd whispers after a few moments in a tortured voice. Toby hadn't thought it possible for that man to feel pain. "You knew she lived."
"I was only thinking a' you," Mrs. Lovett says desperately, no doubt afraid of how angry Mr. Todd is with her. Toby is confused about what their talking about.
Mr. Todd sounds like a disappointed child when he speaks again. "You lied to me."
"No. No, not lied at all," Mrs. Lovett says innocently. "No, I never lied."
"Lucy." Mr. Todd's sounds completely defeated and alone.
"Said she took the poison-she did. Never said that she died."
Toby struggles to understand what they're talking about. He assumes it's about the old beggar woman, but he doesn't know what they mean about lying and poison. He suddenly thinks that poison would be a good way to kill Mr. Todd.
"I've come home again."
"Poor thing, she lived, but he left her weak in the head. All she did for months was just lie there in bed. Should've been in hospital-"
"-wound up in Bedlam instead. Poor thing!"
"Oh, my God!"
"Better you should think she was dead-yes, I lied 'cos I love you! I'd be twice the wife she was." Mrs. Lovett's voice is a combination of soothing tones and fear.
"Lucy, what have I done?" Mr. Todd asks, sounding confused.
"I love you! Could that thing have cared for you like me?"
Toby hears someone twirl around and quick footsteps working their way around the cellar. "Mrs. Lovett, you're a bloody wonder-eminently practical and yet appropriate as always. As you've said repeatedly, there's little point in dwelling on the past!" Mr. Todd sounds completely insane to Toby, and he longs to escape and scream for Mrs. Lovett to run even if it costs him his own life.
As Mr. Todd continues to call to Mrs. Lovett in a crazed voice, saying, "Now come here, my love, not a thing to fear, my love, what's dead, is dead!" Mrs. Lovett asks nervously, "Do you mean it? Everything I did, I swear I thought was only for the best. Believe me! Can we still be married?" Toby is shocked that Mrs. Lovett still wants to marry that violent, wretched man after everything. But he remembers what she said about love, and somewhat understands being willing to do anything for a loved one.
Toby hears their feet quickly and lightly scraping along the floor of the cellar. "The history of the world, my pet-" Mr. Todd sings to Mrs. Lovett.
"Oh, Mr. Todd, oh, Mr. Todd-leave it to me!" she interrupts, speaking happily and soothingly.
"-is learn forgiveness and try to forget!" Mr. Todd continues as if she hadn't spoken.
Mrs. Lovett begins to sing to him of her wishes for the two of them. "By the sea, Mr. Todd, we'll be comfy-cozy! By the sea, Mr. Todd, where there's no one nosy!"
Mr. Todd actually sounds genuinely happy to spend the rest of his life with Mrs. Lovett, but Toby can still hear the insane, angry undertone to his voice, making itself more dominant with every passing moment. "And life is for the alive, my dear! So let's keep living it-"
Mrs. Lovett joins Mr. Todd, singing in sync with him. "-just keep living it! Really living it-"
Suddenly, Toby hears the trays in the oven clatter and Mrs. Lovett's screams. He can hear the fire begin to crackle angrily as the smell of incinerating flesh fills his nose. Toby grows furious.
Mr. Todd threw her in the oven! The despicable man didn't even have the decency to slit her throat like the others. That way, she would die quickly. Like this, he knows she'll feel everything. Toby's trembles become those of fury rather than fear. He begins to crave revenge against Mr. Todd. He wants for him to suffer.
Toby can hear the oven door close and drown out Mrs. Lovett's shrieks. Mr. Todd's razor clatters to the floor as he approaches the bodies. "There was a barber and his wife," Mr. Todd whispers. Toby shoves the pothole away as quietly as possible. "And she was beautiful. A foolish barber and his wife-she was his reason and his life-and she was beautiful and she was virtuous." Toby crawls across the cellar floor, covered in muck and waste. He picks up Mr. Todd's razor and begins approaching the sick serial killer. "And he was-"
Toby almost doesn't kill him. Death would be too kind. He thinks that Mr. Todd deserves to suffer at the thought of killing his own wife. He put the pieces together and figured everything out. It would be so easy to just walk away and let Mr. Todd suffer the same way that he did.
But Mr. Todd is ready to die. He leans his head back as if begging Toby to end his miserable life, and it's just too much to resist. He quickly slits Mr. Todd's throat from behind and watches as the demon's mouth falls open and he begins to bleed all over himself and Lucy. The few small patches of his shirt not soaked in blood are soon completely saturated. As Mr. Todd's body falls forward, Toby turns away in disgust and begins to make his way out of the cellar.
Before he walks out, Toby looks behind him, not at his victim but at the oven containing the woman he called mum. He thinks of his name: Tobias Ragg. He associates that name with a weak child who faced only pain, suffering, and misfortune. But Toby is no longer that child. He longs escape from the shackles that that name left him restrained in. Mr. Todd's razor made him feel powerful, and he needed a new name to match that power. So, looking at the oven, he makes a decision and carves his new name into the cellar's stone wall: Toby Lovett.
With that, he hurries out of the cellar, cleans the razor blade, grabs the bag with his meager belongings from an armchair, sticks a full bottle of gin in it, and prepares to leave. As he makes his way out the side door, he hears two people coming out of Mr. Todd's shop.
"That was the man you were going to trust with our lives?" he hears a girl ask.
"Well, yes," a boy replies sheepishly. "Mr. Todd has come to be a good friend. I knew that he has a tortured past, but I never thought that he would kill. He was the one who thought of the plan to free you from Fogg's asylum."
"Yes I know, Anthony. But even so, he almost killed me!"
"Come now, Johanna, there must be a good reason."
The pair is now at the foot of the stairs, and they spot Toby before he can hide in the shadows.
"Hello," says the girl, disguised as a boy in a trench coat and hat. "What's wrong?"
Toby's silent for a moment as he looks back and forth. Fortunately, Anthony saves him from having to say anything. "You're the boy that helps Mrs. Lovett with the pies, right? Toby?" he asks gently. Toby only nods. "Would it be possible to take a few with us? We're about to have a long trip, and I don't want to have to stop until we're far away from here."
Toby finally finds his voice. "Trust me, you don't want to eat those pies." The couple exchanges a glance and Toby continues. "You're Johanna, correct? Judge Turpin's ward?"
"Yes, have you any idea what Mr. Todd's done with him?"
"Follow me." Toby turns and leads them to the bake house in the cellar, not saying a word. The ungodly smell reaches their noses from the head of the stairs, and Johanna covers her mouth to keep from inhaling too much of it. Anthony wraps his arms around her as they follow Toby.
It takes the couple a moment to register what they're seeing. Johanna is the first to react. The horrid smell coupled with the gruesome scene makes her fall on hands and knees and upchuck the contents of her stomach. Anthony kneels down beside her and rubs her back comfortingly. "What happened?" he demands, looking up at the boy.
Toby walks over to where Mr. Todd sits dead with Lucy in his lap and looks up at the trap door. "Mr. Todd killed Beadle Bamford, then the old beggar from the corner and then Judge Turpin. He came down and realized that the beggar was his wife, and was furious with my mum when he learned that she had lied about his wife being dead. And then he threw her into the oven, so I slit his throat to avenge her."
"You what?" Anthony asks, horrified. He tugs the now slightly assuaged Johanna to him to shield her from the 14 year old boy.
"He was going to kill me because I asked too many questions. But beside that, you see that trap door? Mr. T would kill his customers and then send them down here through that trap door, and Mrs. Lovett would cook them. The meat pies on the rack are made from humans. The people in that bin were chopped up and waiting to be cooked."
"What?" Anthony asks in shock. Toby recalls that he had indulged in more than one of Mrs. Lovett's pies.
Toby nods and continues. "I also once heard Mr. T screaming a sailor ruining his chance to kill a judge and about a wife and daughter named Lucy and Johanna. He was saying how he was going to get revenge on a man for what he did to them. I was slightly drunk at the moment and about to fall asleep, but I suppose that all of this proves that it wasn't a dream as I initially thought."
"No," Johanna whispers.
"Meet mum and dad, Johanna," Toby says quietly, extending his arm to the dead, bloodied couple. Tears begin to streak down Johanna's cheeks.
"Johanna," Anthony says gently, turning her slightly so that they look each other in the eyes. "We have to tell the police."
"My father was a serial killer and my mother was insane."
"Mum said that she took poison but didn't die. She said that he-" Toby points to the judge "-left her weak in the head and that she wound up in bedlam."
"That's enough, Toby," Anthony says sternly, rubbing Johanna's arm. "You have to tell this to the police. Come along-we'll go with you."
Toby thinks about how he can get out of this. "Fine, but I have to get something from Mr. T's shop first."
"Alright, come on-quick now." Anthony rises, pulling Johanna along with him. The trio hurries out of the cellar and back to the stairs outside the shops.
"Wait here, I'll be quick," Toby says. Anthony and Johanna nod, and Toby quickly makes his way into Mr. Todd's shop. He pulls the razor he had used on Mr. T's neck out of his rucksack and hides it in his back pocket. He quickly grabs Mr. Todd's razor sharpener and the rest of the set of silver razors and stuffs them all into his bag. A picture frame catches his eye, and he picks it up. It's two pictures of a happy woman and baby in a double frame, no doubt Mr. Todd's wife and daughter. One of the pictures is smeared with blood.
He slings his rucksack onto his shoulder and carries the fold-up frame in his other hand. "I thought you might like this," he says quietly to Johanna when he returns to the base of the stairs. He holds out the frame to her, and she accepts it, opening it and looking back and forth at the two pictures.
"Thank you, Toby." She wipes the blood with the sleeve of her coat and sticks the frame into her pocket.
"Excellent. Are you ready to go?" Anthony asks, trying to remain calm.
"Yes," Toby replies darkly. He innocently reaches behind his back, quietly pulling the razor out of his pocket with one hand and opening it with the other. He turns the blade on the couple and begins circling around them so that he can unlatch the gate and escape. "But not with you."
"Toby, let's be reasonable." Anthony keeps his voice steady and holds his hands up in a gesture of peace. "You've just scared and confused. We can help you."
"I'm not confused. I've done what I must, and now I'm leaving. I refuse to return to this place. In the cellar, all I can smell is sewer rats and Mrs. Lovett's burnt flesh. I won't stay here any longer." Toby finds the latch and makes a run for it, not stopping or looking back.
"Should we go after him?" Johanna asks with concern.
"No, we have to tell the police what we know. Once they have been informed about what's happened, we can leave this place and never return. We have the rest of Mr. Todd's razors upstairs to show the murder weapons, and we have piles and bins of human remains in the cellar. Let him have his way."
But they wouldn't find the rest of the razor blades because Toby has them. No one would discover what had become of those blades for a long time.
Once he's several blocks away from Fleet Street, Toby slows down and begins making his way to the old work house that Signore Pirelli retrieved him from. He remembers what had drawn the barber to him.
Toby was a sickly child, and had a perpetually pale complexion because of it. Signore Pirelli used to sometimes say that Toby had lost his hair thanks to a combination of ailments that he had contracted and that had resulted in his pale skin. He used that tactic to say that his elixir had made Toby's hair grow back. Toby will never forget the hell that that bastard used to put him through.
Outside of the workhouse, a nasty, lazy, old security guard sleeps on a bench. He's supposed to make sure that no one sneaks into the house to harm the kids, but he would sometimes turn the tables and become the violent one. Toby remembers a particularly harsh and uncalled for beating that he had received by this man's hand. With a twisted smirk, he slashes the man's throat with Mr. T's razor and makes his way inside.
Toby loves the feeling of power he was filled with when he slit that asshole's throat, and he admires the way that the blade shimmers in the darkness.
A useless nurse sits in a chair near the entrance, watching the boys lying on the thin mattresses, some of them cradling dark bottles of gin. "What are you doing wandering the street so late?" she demands in a shrill voice. He remembers her swatting him across the face several times in his childhood here for defending other kids in trouble.
"Taking care of business." Before she can reply, she falls to the floor in a heap, her throat oozing blood. Toby continues making his way through the building and killing every adult he can. In each face, he sees an abuser or an oppressor or someone who denied him love and food and nourishment. The children that he used to work with lay sleeping on thin blankets and mattresses all throughout the building-Toby refuses to kill any of them. When the sun begins to rise in the distance, he prepares to make his departure, finally done extracting the revenge that Mr. Todd had received.
He feels great.
As he makes his way to the entrance, a boy about his age awakens and sees him walking out. "Who's there?" the hung over boy asks in a slurred voice.
"Mark?" Toby asks, recognizing the boy as an old friend of his-Marcus Ingerstreet. Mark and Toby used to be inseparable before Toby was taken away from here. Mark had been like a brother to Toby, and the two had always looked out for each other.
"Toby?" Mark's brain seems to clear up a little, and he wraps Toby in a hug. "What are you doing here?" He looks his old friend over, and his eyes widen. "Is that-"
"Yes, it's blood. But I haven't much time. Come with me! I'm leaving this city, and I want you to come. I'll explain everything on the way."
Mark seems to notice the cruel night nurse lying on the floor in a pool of her blood, and he nods. "Anything to get out of this hell. Come on, let's go out through the back."
Mark leads Toby out of the house through a secret back door, no questions asked, and the two make a run for it. After a few hours of wandering London's streets aimlessly, the starving boys seek out something to eat. Mark takes the little amount of money that Toby has and wanders into a small bakery and buys them some bread to munch on. The pair climbs to the top of a building where Toby changes into his only other set of clothes and tells Mark all about what's happened to him since Signore Pirelli came for him.
When Signore Pirelli found Toby, he had pretended to be a kind, gentle man who would take good care of the boy. Toby's overseers were more than happy to be free of one more mouth to feed, and they gladly sent the boy away. At first, life with Adolfo had been great. They had traveled all around London selling his miracle elixir. The only thing that had been asked of Toby had been his urine to help make the elixir.
But then, Pirelli changed. He began to be abusive to Toby for every little thing. He forced Toby to help him scam people by posing as a sick child whose hair loss was cured by Pirelli's 'miracle elixir' of piss and ink. They travelled London for a few years, Pirelli always claiming to be a barber who had serviced important nobles and monarchs and clergymen in Italy and all over Europe. He always used a ridiculous, fake Italian accent that always irritated Toby, but he beat Toby severely on the one occasion that he asked why Pirelli used that accent.
On one of their demonstrations near Fleet Street, Pirelli lost a shaving competition and five pounds to the mysterious barber calling himself Sweeney Todd. Pirelli had been especially angry and abusive after that encounter. A few days later, the next Tuesday, Signore Pirelli had an appointment near Fleet Street, and he and Toby visited Mr. Todd beforehand. Pirelli told Toby that they would soon be coming into a lot of money, and Toby had hoped that that would make Pirelli happier and less cruel. Perhaps he would even begin to feed Toby on a more regular basis.
A loud bang from Mr. Todd's shop alerts Toby that something had happened, and that made him remember that Adolfo had an appointment. He had hurried upstairs, but his boss was missing. He had assumed that he was just going to his appointment, and Toby had decided to wait for him in the barber shop, but Mr. Todd had convinced him to go back downstairs for some gin.
Mrs. Lovett had gone back and forth between the bakery and the shop upstairs. As Toby grew more and more intoxicated from the gin, he almost passed out. Before he did, he heard Mr. Todd yelling at someone to get out of the shop. He heard Mrs. Lovett assuring him that everything would be alright, but he could tell even through his sloshed state that Mr. Todd was furious. He began yelling about how he had someone and how they wouldn't be returning. Toby had moved closer to the stairs leading to the shop from the inside and had heard Mrs. Lovett mention something about a judge as she did every now and then until the end, but he paid it no mind fell asleep for a few hours just after Mr. Todd was speaking sadly about never seeing someone named Lucy again.
When he woke up, Mrs. Lovett told him that Signore Pirelli had returned and that she had told him that she wanted to keep Toby as an employee. She said that the barber had been fine with it, something that Toby had had a hard time believing, but he didn't question the kindly woman. She was always so sweet and gentle with him, and he soon grew to love her like the mother he had never known. He was always wary and afraid of Mr. Todd, but he was sure that Mrs. Lovett would always be there to protect him from the cruel barber.
Soon after his arrival, Mrs. Lovett began using much tastier meat in her pies. She had a grand reopening of her shop, and life was great for all three of the shops' residents. Toby began to beg Mrs. Lovett to let him help her in the bake house so that she wouldn't have to go up and down those stairs and do all that hard work on her own, but she always refused to allow him. She would always say that he just wasn't old enough.
He saw a young friend of Mr. Todd's every now and then-a sailor named Anthony. He was always reporting about some girl named Johanna, but Toby didn't pay the visits any mind.
But one day, Anthony rushed into Mr. Todd's shop in the morning. Toby had been downstairs cleaning the dining area, and Anthony had been excited but upset. When he came out a few minutes later, he was completely thrilled. Mrs. Lovett followed a few minutes later looking especially tired and grim. She had sent Toby up to see Mr. Todd where he had been told to deliver a letter to Judge Turpin and yelled at for asking to stop by the grocer on the way home.
Despite what Mr. Todd had said, Toby had stopped by the work house to see how his old friends were doing. He had been quickly reprimanded and commanded off the premises.
He had wandered the streets for a while before finally returning home late at night to an exhausted Mrs. Lovett. He had really come to think of her as a mother, and he was afraid that if Mr. Todd was okay yelling at them both, he might not have any qualms about harming either of them, and Toby refused to let him harm his only mother.
Mrs. Lovett kept on trying to quiet him down because he was so upset and finally pulled out a purse that he would recognize anywhere. He knew that Signore Pirelli had had it custom made, and Toby immediately pointed out that it had belonged to his previous employer. Mrs. Lovett had tried to assuage him, telling him that it was simply a birthday gift from Mr. Todd, and Toby believes that this proves what an evil man Mr. Todd is. As much as he hated Pirelli, he wanted to see Todd behind bars more than anything, and he had tried to get Mrs. Lovett to go with him to the police, but she had simply calmed him down and distracted him by offering to teach him how to make the pies.
Once Mrs. Lovett left him alone in the bake house, all hell broke loose, and Toby describes what he went through up until meeting up with Mark at the work house. He was a little scared to describe the adrenaline rush and desire to continue killing back at the work house, but Mark was completely okay with everything and didn't shun Toby as he had feared or look at him with disgust instead of respect.
"Oy, mate, you've been through a worse hell than I 'have back in that nasty work house, 'aven't you?" Mark says incredulously, shaking his had
"You have no idea, old friend." Toby shakes his head and stands up, holding his hand out to help Mark up.
"So you're going by Toby Lovett now? Maybe I should pick a new alias, too." Mark smiles at him mischievously.
Toby smiles back. "What did you have in mind?"
"Well why can't I simply go by Mark Lovett? After all, I always have thought of you as a brother, and we look close enough to be thought of as brothers."
Toby grins at his old friend. "I like the sound of that, brother."
The two boys begin climbing down the building. "So what are we going to do now?" Mark asks curiously.
"I don't know." Standing in an alley with Mark, Toby has no idea what to do. "I had only thought as far as avenging myself and all of the other children that had been locked up in the workhouse.
Mark gets a strange look on his face. "You said that Mr. Todd used to kill his customers, ay?"
"Yeah, I did." Toby suspects where his friend is going but doesn't jump the gun yet.
"How many a them razors did you say that you had?"
"Seven, if you count the one in my pocket."
"What if we posed as shoe shiners on the street? One of us could lure them in and then help hold 'em down while the other killed 'em."
Toby is intrigued, and he's about to completely accept, but then he considers for a moment. "But what would be the point of that? We would be as bad as Mr. T if we simply killed for no good purpose other than to cause trouble."
"Well, why should we 'ave had such horrible times as kids when they grew up loved and with families. It's not fair, and their families need to learn what it's like to have no one to turn to when their scared and alone."
Toby considers for a moment and decides that Mark is right. "And, they have something that we need." Mark looks at him questioningly, and Toby grins fiendishly. "Money."
Mark's eyes widen with excitement, and the two boys link arms, beginning to make their way down the busy London street to where no one could ever possibly know them.

A year passes. The boys found an abandoned little shop a few weeks after meeting up. They carry out their plan just as it was hatched, and no one ever catches on or suspects a thing as they take only one victim a week. The two are like demonic twins, mirroring Mr. Todd's behavior upon his return to London. Toby ignores the similarities and enjoys the time he spends with his adoptive brother.
After a year, however, they make the mistake of taking three in the same family. One visiting their establishment and disappearing is tragic, two is mysterious, and three is downright suspicious. The sister and cousin of the victims begins harassing police until they finally cave. Mark finds out about the alarm that was raised and hurries back to warn Toby.
The boys had developed a system. They take their victims on alternating Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays of each week. They would offer their victim refreshments from the back room where they would immediately pull the Sweeney Todd and slit their throat. They would then hide the victims in a closet in a back room for the day until they closed at 8. At 2 a.m. each death day, they would take the victim out of the closet and carry them to a grave in a random location that they would dig each Saturday at the same time.
Unfortunately, the police decided to raid the shop on a Wednesday only moments after they had hid that week's victim. The cops search for the boys in the front room, but they aren't there. The cops hurry into the back room where the boys stand in front of a closet with a small box containing five razors on the floor between them. Each boy has a razor in his left hand, and they both stare at the confused cops who stop in the doorway to the room.
"My name is Toby Lovett, and I killed Sweeney Todd," Toby says loudly. As soon as he says that, each boy digs their sharpened razor into his wrist as deep as he can and allows the blood to squirt out of it. They then take the razors in their left hands and slash their right wrists before the police officers can stop them. They collapse to the ground, having lost too much blood from their deep wounds.
The police are unable to save the boys, and looking at the man in the closet, they can't save him either.
