Chapter 3 :  "E"

This time Kane was grateful not to have fallen down. Although, he was absolutely not used to this changing or transmuting thing Red was easily doing, especially, when Red transformed into him. The shock still flowed through him like blood, reaching every corner of his body. The numb sensation kept his feet planted to the moist grass and ensured that his mouth was so dry and cold, that it was impossible to form any words, let alone move. However, his mind was still working at a hundred and ten percent.

“What  in the hell was going on ?? , what is happening??,  this HAS to be a dream?, this has to be, This is surely a dream , Kane was absolutely sure that he would wake up any moment in a cold sweat with the blankets intertwined with him, like a stray jacket. The stingy pain that came from his bruised arm, nullified any thought of that blissful option.

This could not be happening, and it was absolutely, definitely, undoubtedly not happening in knoxel. The idea that a man, who Kane left his safe and secure room to meet in the middle of the ominous dark street has, just changed into a white fox and there after a mirror image of him was ridiculous, even comical. However Kane was not shocked, no, it was something beyond that, an upgraded version of shock. Nevertheless this new version of shock still plagued his mind, causing the gears that were once turning so rapidly with such purpose to slow down. Why wasn’t he running, why wasn’t he his feet propelling him to any safe place, away from this maniac, a hill, a bush anything.

No. His body was dead still and somehow, inexplicably calm had undulated across his body. He didn’t know what to do or where to go, but he knew that this situation although bizarre was reality and he had accepted that .“So you’re like a shape shifter “said Kane, as he slowly bent forward and used his hands to push himself up of the neighbour’s lawn, in attempt to regaining feeling in his limbs. “No, I am a transmuter as I have told you” said Red calmly. “I can only change into humans and other animals, not insects though, I mean I have tried but, well it’s gone terribly wrong!” Seeing Kanes interested look, he elaborate further.

“Transmuting is the process of sub atomically altering or manipulating my DNA structure you see. So I can’t change into anything I choose, and there are some more limitations to my abilities. The further the desired transformation is from me, that is to say myself as a male human, than the harder it is to transmute into”. -“ where have your clothes gone” said Kane interrupting Red and  staring inquisitively at the dark place under the others neighbours looming tree, where Reds,  mouse coloured cowboy hat, his old wellington boots,  and his leather jacket, used to be, spread eagle like some had just disappeared  from their clothes mid walk.

“As for my clothes I am able to change inanimate objects into whatever I will, be it the colour or the size anything go to do with the condition of the objects”. Reds face seemed to become server as he continued. “But one of the taboos, in transmuting, is that you can not under any circumstance change a living physical being into an inanimate object and vice versa,  I’m sure you can probably guess why, as how could a soul be  added or removed. It is impossible and extremely unethical, to move a soul. The soul you must understand is such a precious element of the human condition and any attempt to manipulate it to fit your transmuting conditions is horrible and inhumane, although many people have tried and many people have unfortunately ended up -.

“POP” Kane had turned his head to the left so quickly that he was lucky to not have broken it.  Wincing in pain and rubbing his neck gently, he stared at the dark looming end of the street, drinking in every aspect of the looming trees and shapeless figures.

He was sure he heard a faint sound “POP, POP”. There it was again, where was it coming from.  It reminded him of micro waved popcorn. Straining his eyes as hard as he could, Kane saw to his absolute astonishment and horror that large wooden doors had begun to materialises out of thin air. Moving backwards he nearly slipped on the neighbours large green hose pipe that was snake like across the shining front lawn, looking up, he saw that several more doors were popping from inexistence to existence from nothing into matter. The doors all had a brown mouse colour to them along with a golden door handle that caught Kanes eye in the night, its gleam was sinister. Printed in the middle of the smooth brown doors was the letter E in big scarlet bold writing.

The doors seem to have appeared in sporadic bizarre places. One had made its debut behind a pruned lavender bush, shaped like a love heart. Another, in front of the second story windows floating in mid air,  like a cloud in front of  the house, and even from the ground, similar to a zombie rising from the  dark  straight gravel road.

The wind carried Red’s frantic mutters. “ I’ve wasted too much time showing him my abilities, wanting him to fully understand why ummm, umm we need to leave NOW” Kane felt a  vice like grip rap around the middle of his arm, wincing at the pain, he turned reproachfully  to look straight at himself. Turning he was surprised to see shinning miscoloured eyes staring back at him, he had not heard any familiar body shaking bang, confused he asked. “When did you cha”- “LETS GO” said Red with a loud bark “NOW, we have no time to waste”

“What” said Kane cynically pulling his arm away “who said I was going with you”. “What’s wrong anyway?? Why you so stress and worried, I thought the door trick was a part of your transmitter ability or whatever, it’s pretty cool though or maybe it not you maybe it’s like someone with special powers like you ,I wonder  where the  doors lead to”. With what Kane thought was unnecessary force, Red pulled his arm around, swinging him straight, directly facing the distant popping doors “LOOK” said Red a note of fear in his voice “Their here”.

Looking forward at the moving dark figures, a shower of fear washed over Kane, as he stared mouth open, jaw hitting the ground.  People in unnatural white suits were emerging from the brown wooden doors on to the various mowed lawns and pruned bushes. These people all had mechanical malicious red eyes with no whites to them. The malicious eyes zoomed from side to side. They seemed to walk in a slightly stiff procedural manner like they were not properly taught how to work. Furthermore these “people” in white suits were, jumping from the doors that appeared floating beside double story windows, roofs and even ancient looking trees that were at least 50 feet in the air .  They landed unscathed onto the roads; some had landed on cars crushing the car with surprising eases, as if it was a soda when compared to their power and might. Some were descending from the top of crushed cars and destroying letterbox or playgrounds in their wake. These white suit people marched forwards.

He could smell the darkness that emanated from them as they walked towards Kane and Red, their eyes were fixed in the distant, scanning and looking for their prey. Their scarlet eyes swept over Kane and Red’s blurry disfigured shadow of a body. Their faces were mask like in their appearance, the skin was elastic and stretched tight around their faces like there were wearing a balloon.

“AAAH” Kane had let out a shout as he felt a hand grab the back of his t-shirt and slowly pull him of the ground dragging his feet on the gravel road and subsequently on to the green yard “What are you doi- “SHUT UP” said Red quietly but with authority. Releasing his shirt Red pushed Kane into an afro like bush .He could feel the pointy twigs and leave assault his face as he landed face first in the bush. Red follow suit, landing awkwardly and accidently squashing Kane’s bruised arm “Sorry” he replied to Kane’s whisper of pain.  Opening his eyes that had been closed because of the pain Kane looked around. He could see their red eyes permeate the darkness like a knife. The unnatural walk made Knoxel seem extremely eerie and evil. Rubbing his arm and underneath his armpits, where his t-shirt had cut him like wires, when Red had unceremoniously dragged him to the bush, he turned looking up and down the street to see if more had appeared.

What were they? And how come there was such a chilling aura emanating from them?. They seemed to be less than humans, their features were distorted like cold wax, their skin was firm and hard, but they were not robots.  It seemed to Kane to be a mixture of the two perhaps.  Kane hid his face behind a canapé of leaves that tickled the sides of his faces.”Don’t move” Red whispered. He was looking straight at the white suited men. To Kanes surprise Red was not hiding his face but sticking his head to the side to get a clearer but more dangerous view. Kane could feel his heart attempt to tattoo itself on the inside of his chest. Not doing anything, not running, made him feel uneasy, it made his sense of danger and impending doom increase tenfold.  He felt like him and Red were just waiting for them to attack us, to come get us and kill us.

He turned his head to look at Red’s unconcealed half body. What was he doing Kane thought? You could see his weird eyes, from ages away; surely these crazy white people things would see him. How could Red be so oblivious to his obvious revealing nature? Red seem to Kane to be an experienced man when they first meet, Red seemed to emanate an aura of knowledge and leadership. His presence should have a calming effect on Kane.

But Red’s face looked as confused and scared as Kane felt. If Red didn’t know what he was doing then, well I might have to come up with a plan of action to get us both out of here, despite Red warning of staying safe and quiet. I’m not going to stay here and wait docile as my death approaches.  As Kane caught a glimpse of his house, he wondered how in the world he could have landed himself in this mess. It was hard to believe that merely an hour ago he was in his old but nevertheless exceedingly warm cosy bed dreaming about her blonde beautiful hair. However now he was looking at the scarlet eyes of the white murderous men in suits hoping, just hoping this was not the last thing he saw before he died. Unfortunately these men to Kane look extremely intent on living up to their new pronounced title of “Murderers”.
