I awoke with a start, reaching high abovemy head, desperatly trying to find the snooze button on my alarm clock. I had had a bad dream. The same dream I had been having since I could remember. I had grown acustomed to the shreiking of my mother as she got speared by something, but it was always too dark to see what it was. Every time I had the dream, I would be so close to death that she could feel the point of the sharp object and she would wake up. Screaming almost every time, her father would come rushing in with the beaver lamp off of his bedside table. That old man had such a weird sense of style. This time was different though. She had awoken scared, same as every morning but this time it felt more real. As if I had known what the object that had sliced my mother like butter had been teeth, but not human teeth, animal teeth. Although, this animal had seemed to have human-like qualities. Almost a human...but not. I felt in the pit of my stomach that I knew what it was, it was my mind that was still confused. As I got dressed, I couldn't help but think about why the dream had felt so different this time, what had changed. That same darness had envelopped her like a cloak of nothingness, the same dripping of my mother's blood as it hit the floor, the same paralyzing fear that had rooted me to the spot..but something had been off. I had felt like she had known where I was, I had felt like I had known who was done this. When I got to the kitchen, my father was trying to make eggs and pancakes, I had no idea why though, he very rarely cooked. I wondered what the occasion was. I smacked my forehead in stupidity,I had completely forgetten. It was my first day of highschool.I hurried over to the stove and quickly scrambled the now roomtemperature eggs. "Thanks dad.....for trying" I said as nice as possible, without gagging on the scent of the burn pancakes.
He embraced me tightly and said "your welcome sweetie," he heldme at arms length and continued, "today is your special day, be happy." He embracedme once more then turned his attention quickly to the eggs that had almost caught fire. Nothing had changed except for the fact thatI was fourteen and had not had a real boyfriend inmy life.I havehad those grade 7 and 8 "boyfriends" whose idea of a date was hanging around on the playground. No real boyfriends though, andmy older brother and father had petitionned againstme having aboyfriend tillI was married, unless told otherwise. They had thoughti was a perfect child, getting good grades, keeping my room clean and getting my homework done. ButI never did my homework, my room was a mess, although no one went in so they could not see, and I snuck out almost every night to go to a party. Very good girl indeed. I had my mind set on getting a real boyfriend this year though.I wanted a boy that would treatme nicely and would be approved bymy father, or smart enough to stay away from the gun rack.
Itook several deep breaths, trying to calm myself down whileIwas brushingmy teeth because last timeI got worried and was brushingmy teeth....well lets just say there was toothpaste where you would not expect. AsI walked downstairs to wait for the bus,my brother Robert, was sitting at the table eating a waffle drenched in syrop. "Do you want some waffles with that syrup?" I asked with a hint of a smile in my voice.
"No one was talking to you Cristie."He sneered, he knew i hated that name. "Aren't you going to be late for school?" He chuckled, knowing i hate being late, i had to check the window three times bofore going back upstairs to get my backpack. As i reached my room, the bus pulled up in front of my house and i cursed. "Crap!" Igrabbed my bag and rushed down the stairs. As soon as i stepped outside, i knew it was going to be a horrible day. For starters, my bus almost took off without me, second, it was pouring rain and i was wearing white. Good thing i had a spare set of clothes.
When I stepped onto the bus, eveyone stared. I knew i was pretty, but not THAT pretty. I quickly sat in the first available seat i saw, which was in the back next to some girl with average hair and a slightly smaller breast size. SinceI was tall, blonde and beautiful,I felt akward sitting next to a plain Jane. Yet,I felt bad for thinking like that. The Hathaways dont judge people for their looks. AsI sat down, the girl turned and looked shocked that a beautiful girl likeme sitting next to her.
"H-hi, I-i-i-'m Z-z-z-oe." The average girl spoke with a slight stutter, which didnt botherme sinceI used to volounteer at speach therapy, soI amaccustommed to speach impediments.
"Hi, I'm Crystal Hathaway. Nice to meet you. Im a freshhman, what year are you?
"Oh, me? Freshman, same as you. Really, you would be surprized at how many freshmen there are in a year." She spoke matter-of-factly.
When she stopped talking, five boys walked onto the bus, one after the other. The one that walked in first was tall drop dead gorgeous and had hair the was long enough to just cover part of his eyes. He looked at me as he passed and plopped into the backseat with his buddies. I didn't even bother looking at them, i was so concentrated on him. I turned to Zoe and asked, "who is that?!"
"Th-th-that's Tyler Boudeir. The c-c-c-coolest of the c-c-cool. H-h-he basically r-r-runs the sc-sc-school." She sounded awestruck as she spoke his name, which she should be because he was beautiful!
It was as if he could read my mind because at that exact moment, he turned towards me and smiled, a huge bright white smile. I was so mezmerized that i almost didn't hear Zoe rambling on about the other four guys.
"Th-th-the tall b-b-brown h-haired one is R-r-reynold, the c-c-carrot top i-i-is Hue and the t-t-two twins o-o-on his left a-a-are N-n-nick and Joey. Reynold is Tyler's right h-h-hand man, T-t-tyler never g-g-goes anywhere w-w-without him. H-h-hue, is Reynold's l-l-little brother. The twins, th-th-they are my c-c-cousins...." She almost sounded ashamed, I have no idea why though, they are HOTMAZING!
"You csn't chose your family," Iagreed without much enthusiasm. I was shocked when the bus came to a stop in front of the school. I could not beleive how short that ride had been, or was I just too preoccupied with looking at Tyler. There was just something about him that made me weak in my knees. His muscles were clearly defined under his tight shirt. It just seemed to magnify his cuteness. I got up to get off the bus when a girl shoved me down into my seat again to let the others past first. Every other freshman seemed to have followed my example and stayed seated. I just got up again and ran into Tyler by accident. He turned around and i turned three shades of pink.
"Hello there....are you new?"He spoke in a very seductive voice that lured me instantly into his arms. We just stood there, his arms around me while everyone sat and just stared in awe. I think I even heard a few angry scoffs. Too soon though, he let go. I knew he would have to eventually, and he walked off the bus with his gang. Zoe squealed and ushered me off the bus and intop the building shreiking as we walked.
"I-i-i-i-i-i-i can't b-b-beleive th-th-that just h-h-h-happened!! You kn-kn-kn-w how rare that i-i-is when he even n-n-n-n-notices a f-f-freshie?!?!?! J-j-j-just......wow!
I just calmly walked all the way to the main office to get my schedule and not hyperventilate, when i saw a few girls from my bus and they glared at me so cooly I swear the room temperature dropped below zero. It was as if they were staring right into my soul when a chirpy little voice spoke, "how may i help you today sweetheart?" She had a very heavy accent and after evey two words, she chewed her gum so loud i am sure the third floor heard it.
"I am here to get my schedule" I said in my sweetest voice possible.
"Were you not attending Virgin Mary Catholic school last year," clacks gum "you should have gotten your schedule there..." Her voice trailed off suspiciously.
"No, i actually just moved here this summer. I came from Arizona a few weeks ago actually. My mom died so we needed a cheaper house that we could afford."
"Oh, okay then," clacks gum "her you go dear." As i reached over to get the peice of paper, i got a smell of smoke and scotch. I could not place the wherabouts of the stench until i turned and saw that it was radiating from this woman! Uh, ew. I thanked her quickly and left as fast as I could.
I was horrified as i walked into my frist class because when i stepped inside the door, the only available seat left was next to Tyler, of all people why did it have to be him?
Iwalk to the seat and a big goofy grin spreads across his face. "Hey again. You are the pretty girl from the bus right?"
I swallowed hard, so hard it hurt, and said "yeah, and you are the guy that was randomly hugging me, right?" I asked shyly. I knew the answer to that question already though. It was definately a yes because he remeb=mbered me and the fact that i could never forget his angelic face.
