It was another boring day in class. I watched the clock as the teacher gave the lecture. I tapped the heel of my foot and was balancing my pencil on my nose, while my chin rested in the palm of my hand. The tapping of my foot got louder with every tick of the clock. It felt like this day would never end.
Just when I thought I would go crazy, the bell rung. I stuffed all my books into my book bag and dashed out the door. Finally, the school day was over. It was only a few more weeks until summer vacation and I was very excited. No school and I could just stay home and watch TV in my pajamas. Not only that, but I could sleep in as long as I want.
"Angelique wait up!"
I turned around to see my best friend, Beth, running towards me. I stopped and waited for her. By the time she reached me she was out of breath.
"You…have…to…remember…that I'm…on the…second floor." she said gasping.
"Sorry. I just keep thinking about summer vacation. I can't wait." I said cheerfully.
"Yeah, I have to go to that college thing for a week. I get to take an actual college class for a week. My parents are making me do to increase my chances of getting a scholarship. I am both excited, but then I'm not. I don't want to listen to anymore lectures."
"Well don't worry. When you get back, I promise we'll get to have a lot of fun."
"Okay, that's a promise."
Beth and I pinky promised. We walked out of the school with our arms linked, smiling and laughing. We got on the bus and sat down in our usual seat. We talked while we listened to my mp3. It was one of those cheap ones that only hold up to 255 songs. I didn't even have half of that on the stupid thing.
"Okay, pick a number between 1 and 111." I said.
"Um…35." Beth replied.
I changed the number to 35. "Dragostea Din Tei" by O-Zone. Yes, I liked to listen to foreign music. I don't care if I can't understand them. I just like the beat. Beth likes this song too. She actually knows the song by heart and sings along with the song. I usually just pretend I know the song by heart.
"So, do you have anything specific planned for summer vacation?" Beth asked.
"Nope." I said.
"Let me guess. You're going to sleep in, watch TV in your pajamas, and surf the net."
"Wow. Geez, I wonder what we're going to do on the day I get back."
"Don't worry I have something fun planned, but I'm keeping it a secret. Hey do you think I can stay the night tomorrow night since tomorrow is Friday?" I asked.
"Sure. I'll just ask my mom. She's picking me up tomorrow, so just bring your clothes to school." Beth said.
Beth and I were silent for the rest of the ride, but continued to listen to music. We would sing along to songs that we knew. The girl sitting in front of us was getting annoyed and told us to shut up. Beth and I put our hands over our mouths to muffle our laughter, then we continued on singing. We could tell the girl was getting annoyed, but that was the point. If she asked nicely we would have stopped. Maybe.
When we came close to my stop, Beth took the headphone out of her ear and gave it to me. I turned off my mp3 and put it in my pocket. Beth said bye to me when I got off. I checked the mail and walked up my driveway. Nobody was home yet, so I had to get my house key out of my pocket. I opened the door and expected to see my golden retriever, Holly, to rush up and greet me like she always does. She didn't come to greet me when I opened the door, which I thought was very strange.
"Holly! Come her girl!" I shouted.
I heard barking in the backyard. I went to the backdoor and found it wide open and Holly was in the backyard barking like crazy. I went outside and grabbed Holly by the collar. I brought her inside, but it was difficult because she was protesting. I was finally able to get her inside. I closed and locked the backdoor. I walked into the living room when it finally hit me. Somebody was in the house and that is why the backdoor was open.
Holly started barking and growling again. I shiver went up my spine. I could feel someone behind me. I turned around to see a man wearing a ski mask. I opened my mouth to scream, but he hit me in the side of my head with something. I fell to the ground and I could feel something warm running down my face. I saw Holly running towards us. She lunged at the man, but I heard a gunshot and Holly fell to the ground whimpering.
I felt the man grab my arm and drag me to my feet. He did it so quickly that I felt dizzy. He dragged me to my bedroom and flung me onto the bed. He ripped open my buttoned shirt and ran his hands down my body. I started to scream and struggle despite the fact that I was injured. He grabbed my hands and held them down. I kneed in his groin and I heard him grunt. He held himself with one hand and that made one of my hands free. I grabbed his ski mask and yanked it off.
My heart beat rapidly as I stared at the man. He had shoulder length curly, dark brown hair, and dark brown eyes that showed a lot of anger. My blood ran cold with fear. But I memorized every detail of that face. I made sure I would never forget it. The man tried to get his hand around my neck, but I continued to struggle. I scratched his face with my nails and he gave out a loud yell.
We heard sirens. The man jumped off the bed and pointed the gun at me. He shot me twice and dashed out of the room. The pain was unbearable. I couldn't breath. With every breath, my lungs filled up with more blood. I heard the door slam open and heard the police shouting. But that was all I heard when everything was covered in a white light.
I was surrounded by white light. There was a pair of white stairs in front of me. I walked up the stairs and it seem to take forever just to reach the top. When I finally reached the top I saw a pair of pearly gates. The gates opened up by themselves and a man was standing next to them.
The man had blonde hair and blue eyes. He wore a white robe and had a pair of white wings. He was also surrounded by a golden aura. I had to blink a few times to make sure this wasn't just me hallucinating.
He smiled. "Welcome to Heaven Angelique." he said.
"Welcome to Heaven."
"H-H-Heaven!?" I said. "But then that means…I'm…I'm…"
"Dead." he said casually.
I fell to my knees from the shock.
"I'm dead. I'm dead."
"Yes, but don't worry. You're in Heaven. You'll be living in paradise." The man said walking over to me and patting me on the head.
"No. NO!" I said. "I don't want to be dead. Please send me back. I want to go back. Please, I beg you to send me back." I screamed grabbing his robe. Tears were running down my eyes.
The man frowned at me. "I'm sorry, but I can't send you back. Besides, do you not want to live in paradise? Here you don't have to suffer. There's no pain, sorrow, anger, or jealousy. Just simple bliss."
"But I want to go back. I want to go back."
"Well there is one way. I could send you back on one condition."
"You can!? Tell me. I'll do anything."
"You have to become a guardian angel. We will send you back if you promise to protect the charge that we give you."
"Okay. I'll be a guardian angel. I promise I'll protect my charge, just send me back."
The man let out a huge sigh. "Very well."
He touched my forehead and I felt something warm spread throughout my entire body. A golden aura surrounded my body. Then the aura faded.
"Good luck Angelique." the man said.
The floor opened up and I fell through it. I was falling, but I couldn't scream. I looked down at the Earth below. My heart was pounding with fear. I was falling towards a big white building. As I got closer, I expected to feel the impact. But when I reached it I went through the building. I went through floor after floor. Then I went through another floor and saw myself in a hospital bed. I slammed right into my body.
I jolted up in the hospital bed. My heart racing and sweat pouring down my face. I could hear the heart monitor beeping and IV's were stuck in my hand. A bandage was wrapped around my head and my chest. It took me a few minutes to remember everything. The man in the house, Holly getting shot, seeing the man's face, the man shooting me, then I promised to be a guardian angel. No that couldn't have happened. That part had to be a dream. It just had to be.
