Chapter 1: 'Like a Predator...'
“No!” I screamed, my broken voice echoing on the walls and into my mother’s room were she stood glaring at me through narrowed eyes.
“Fine Jalyn!... But you know what happened to your sister when--!” She screamed at me, sending me yet another painful jab; but I was already out the door; running as fast as I could away from the house. I didn’t know where I was going, or what I was doing… but none of that mattered.
I smiled through the tears as I ran like a mad women through the narrow streets of a neighborhood I hoped I’d never see again.
It was the final straw, the last time I could take it; I was finished with her.
It’s not like it was unusual; a seventeen year old runaway…
Of course… usually the next thing you heard about them was either that they had committed some kind of horrible crime, or died.
But on a positive note…
The next sound I heard somehow wasn’t even a shock to me. Why not? Of course it would be my luck to get run over by a U.PS. truck the moment I ran away from home… WHY not?!
My eyes peeled wide as I turned around; my mouth gaping while a huge truck honked its horn over and over again; the headlights flashing in my eyes; disorienting me.
Reality struck not a moment to soon. I sent my entire frame flying to the woods; trying to avoid death… while it stalked me like an angry predator.
I was it’s prey… and I kept getting away.
I hit the ground with a thud and I could almost hear the ribs cracking. Gasping in pain; I pushed my arm down onto the hard surface.
“Perfect.” I breathed; staggering. Instead of landing ‘gracefully’ on the grass beside the road. I had landed in the other lane… on the ROAD; nearly avoided the oncoming truck.
To tired, to stressed; I laid my head back onto the cold pavement. Not even bothered by the fact that I was laying in the middle of the road at night.
I didn’t care at this point.
I closed my eyes; breathing in the scent of burning wood. Winter had just begun, the cold, crisp air nipping at my skin… while I waited for my breathing to slow; for the adrenaline to calm.
I sat up slowly, taking in my surroundings like a new creature. I was prey; and I was more careful now.
I stood up; gasping in pain when my sides reacted like stabbing knives; cutting into my chest.
Yep… broken ribs.
Groaning; I limped into the forest… yearning to lay down. I didn’t care that it was dark, that I was in the woods alone, that there could be wolves or something in the woods right now; I was too tired.
“…Or something.” A low voice murmured quietly into my ear. The shock and fear that voice sent through me was unimaginable, unexplainable. I, myself couldn’t even comprehend what I was feeling in that moment. My eyes peeled wide; while a shiver ran silently down my spine.
“What are you doing out here so late at night?” The voice asked; feigning sympathy.
“Who are you…?” I asked, my voice shacking; while my teeth rattled together. I strange, unnatural breeze began blowing through the forest …
One time,
Two times,
Three times,
Four times,
Five times,
Six times,
Seven times,
Eight times…
It continued on and on until I finally stopped counting around twelve times.
My breathing sped while I waiting for an answer.
I didn’t get one.
Slowly, I turned around, not wanting to catch whoever it was by surprise. I’d been under attack enough times to realize when you’re caught, you don’t surprise you captors unless you’re absolutely positive you can escape by doing so.
“I wouldn’t do that..” A voice cautioned me; a clear smirk in his voice when I was almost halfway around.
I froze as it’s hot breath blew down my neck.
Yes. It’s.
