Delilah made faces as she scrubbed the urinals. This was so unfair, she thought. And worse, Charles had assigned some prissy bitch to follow her around and make sure she didn't try anything funny.
"So Shane, he's like the head master right?" Delilah asked the snooty woman.
"That is correct." she replied.
"Why did he ask me to come here? I mean, what is the whole point of this place?"
"Ms. Daniels, I'm not here to answer your questions."
"Right." Delilah sighed. "It must suck to have to follow me around all day though huh? I mean, I can't help but wonder what you did to get a job like this. You must be low on someone's list."
"Charles asked me to do this because he trusts I can watch you and take care of any trouble you may cause." she replied in a sharp tone of voice.
Delilah snorted. "You just keep on telling yourself that. Any idiot can watch me clean bathrooms all day."
"Are you implicating on my intelligence, Ms. Daniels?" the woman hissed.
"As long as we have and understanding that you got handed a job a monkey can do." she muttered.
"I'll not have you mock me! You watch your mouth!"
"I'm not scared of you." Delilah snapped.
"Listen, you little brat. I have high connections here. I'm not aloud to kill you but I can very well hurt you and get away with it." she growled.
Delilah pulled her gloves off and faced the woman. "Don't get pissy with me because you're bottom of the food chain here. I'm not the one who made you follow me around all day-" the woman knocked her back against the wall with a hard slap.
Delilah felt her head smack against the wall for the second time in two days. It sent a painful shock down her spine and she felt the dull ache she'd had explode into a searing pain. She sank to the floor and put her hand to her head as the room spun around her.
She felt the warm liquid matt in her hair and groaned.
"Matilda!" a familiar voice yelled. "What in the hell are you doing? She's already had her head nearly busted open! You could have killed her! If Shane finds out about this he may very well kill you. She's his pupil."
The woman gasped. "You didn't tell me that!" she cried.
"I told you not to hurt her! Go, get out while you can. When Shane hears of this he'll want you dead. He favors the girl."
Matilda burst into tears then ran from the bathroom. Charles quickly walked over to Delilah and lifted her. He sniffed then groaned. "Oh no." he groaned. "There's a lot of blood."
Breathing heavily now, he began running. Then he suddenly stopped.
By now Delilah was too dizzy to make out faces. She was limp in Charles arms. "What's happened to her this time?" an unfamiliar woman's voice asked.
"It seems Matilda lost her temper with her. You'll have to stitch her up again."
"I've heard the girl has a mouth on her."
"That she does." Charles replied in a sigh as he set her down on a cushioned bench. "When Shane hears about this-"
"Charles." Shane murmured from the doorway. Delilah was only now realizing that Charles had already brought her in a different room. How had he'd gotten her there so fast? "What's happened?"
"Delilah seemed to have-"
"I slipped." Delilah cut in. She knew very well that she had deserved that slap. She just didn't learn. "I was cleaning the urinals and I tripped and hit my head against the wall when I leaned down. Matilda was so upset about it. She thought you might be angry with her for my falling on her watch. Charles, I would suggest you find her and calm her down. Let her know that I'm okay."
"Of course." Charles murmured then ducked out of the room.
"You and Charles have seemed to come to better terms rather quickly." Shane noted. "I find that surprising. I also find it quite interesting that you would lie for a woman you hardly know and who hit you."
Delilah flinched as the woman stuck a needle in head. Damn that hurt. "I would reply with something smart but I really don't feel good." she said and swallowed back the rising bile in her throat.
The woman who she now realized was a nurse began stitching up her head. Again.
"Maybe if you learned to control your tongue we would not have this problem." he said.
"Yeah, yeah. Look, I'll admit I deserved that hit alright? I was an ass and I needed a slap in the face. But if you would just let me go home-"
"I'll not hear anymore of that. You're not going home. That discussion is finished." he replied, his tone finalizing.
"Fine." she murmured.
"All done." the nurse said and smiled at her.
"Bet I look like shit." Delilah sighed.
Shane walked over to her and picked her up. "I'll take her to her room to rest." he sighed.
He carried her down the hall at a slow pace.
"Has anyone here ever heard of sticks and stones? You people are so touchy." she muttered.
Shane glared at her. "It's not about words it's about disrespect. We do not tolerate it here."
"So you won't do anything to Matilda?" she asked, feeling relieved.
"She will be punished. You disrespected her but she disrespected me by disobeying my orders."
"Oh come on. I had it coming to me."
He smiled now. "You are a strange girl, Delilah. But it is none of your concern."
"What did Charles mean when he said I was your pupil?" she murmured.
He sighed. "I was going to wait until you signed the paper, but I suppose I might as well tell you. When you become a student I will take you under my personal observation and you will be under my control."
"But I have to sign the paper right?" she asked.
"It is part of the requirement." he mumbled.
"You know I won't sign it." she replied.
"We'll see about that." he said and gave her a vicious smile that Delilah could tell had more meaning than he'd meant to show.
