Detective Janie Tavak paced back and forth across her livingroom while her husband drank a beer and watched. "What’s wrong Sweetie?" he asked, his eyes following her.
"I just can’t stop thinking about that girl. I’ve seen some of the stuff that goes on at that school. She could be dead, she could be getting beat. That Mr. Jacobs guy had a weird look in his face too. What if he’s raping her? I have to do something."
"Why don’t you?" he asked. "I mean, you’ve been talking about her nonstop."
She looked at him and saw a man she loved more than anything. He had light brown hair and brown eyes. He was average looking but he was always stood out somehow. He was the most beautiful thing in the world to her.
So why didn’t she do something about the girl? Because she had her priorities straight. No matter how much she wanted to save her, how much she wanted to save all of those people, she couldn’t risk her husband.
Shane had warned her before about getting involved in his business. If she put just one toe over the thin line he’d drawn, Ty would be hurt.
"Because it’s not my business and my Chief has promised that if I don’t keep my nose out of it then I’ll be fired." she replied, hating every word and more hating the realization.
Ty snorted. "Since when do you listen to your Chief?" he asked and sipped his beer.
She shot him a look. "He was serious this time, Ty. Mr. Jacobs is a dangerous man."
He made a face. "Did he threaten you?"
She looked away. "No, he didn’t threaten me."
"Janie," Ty said, his voice drifting into the "warning tone", as in, "Tell me because I’m your husband and we’re going to get into a fight if you don’t."
"He didn’t threaten me, Ty. He threatened you." she sighed. She went over to him and plopped down next to him.
"Janie, I can handle myself." he replied and smiled at her. "Don’t worry about me."
"It’s my job to worry about you. As a cop and as your wife."
"I know." he sighed. "It’s getting late. We should get to bed."
She nodded and kissed him. "Let me just go slip into some pajamas."
"There’s no point." he replied and grinned at her. "They won’t be on for long."
She stood with a big grin on her face and walked into their bedroom. "I’ll be in there in a minute. Just let me finish this beer." he called.
"Don’t take too long." she replied in a low and sexy voice.
He smiled then pulled out his cell phone. He stood and walked into the kitchen.
"Hello?" a deep voice answered.
"Shane, it’s me." Ty replied.
"Hello, old friend. It’s been a long time since we’ve spoken."
"Shane, you’re scaring my wife."
"Your wife is going to get hurt, Ty. Not by me of course, I think of her as family. But you know how Charles and the others can be. I’m protecting her."
"You know Janie. She’s not going to leave it alone. Something about a girl who was crying in your office. She thinks you’re going to beat her and rape her."
Shane scoffed. "She can think whatever she wants Ty. It’s none of her concern."
"Aww, c’mon Shane. If she hasn’t signed anything why don’t you just let the girl go? It won’t be that hard to find someone else-"
"I have good reason to believe that this one is...it. I think she’s the one, Ty. The one I’ve been searching for."
He sighed. "I’m happy for you, really. I know you’ve been waiting for this girl for like three thousand years but I waited for Janie for a long time too and I’ll do anything to protect her. Maybe if you could just convince her that you’re not going to hurt this girl. As my friend you have to do this for me."
"Ty, I won’t hurt her. She still has much to learn and it will take much authority for her to come around, but I won’t lay a finger on her."
"I believe you, Shane. But I need you to tell Janie this. She’s going to keep looking into this until she’s sure this girl is okay. I can’t let her get hurt."
"Change her then. You’re ready to do it. It will definitely distract her."
"Janie is strong. She’ll survive. Trust me, I know this. And if I had an ounce of doubt that she wouldn’t make it then I would never allow it. But I’ve been doing this for years and I know she’ll be alright. You have told her haven’t you?"
Ty sighed. "How am I supposed to tell her something like that?"
"Ty, she’s your wife. I think she’ll notice that you’re not aging in a few years. I’m surprised she hasn’t already."
"She’s said something a few times." Ty muttered.
Shane chuckled. "I’m not going to hurt Delilah."
"Delilah? That’s a cute name. How old is she?"
"Is she kind of small?"
"She’s average size. She has a mouth on her."
"What woman doesn’t." Ty joked. "We both know Janie isn’t going to let this go."
"I would advise that you try and convince her Ty. Why don’t you come over to the school and we can discuss how to prevent Janie from any harm. We may even be able to find a way to convince her that Delilah is safe. I would like to have the police out of my business once and for all. And it will be good to see you again."
"Yeah." Ty sighed. "That sounds good. I’ll come over tomorrow around noon. But that was kind of harsh, you threatening me to get to her."
"It was all in her best interest." Shane reassured him. "I’ll see you tomorrow."
