KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

“Open up.  Police!” the people on the other side yelled.  We were all sitting around the living room watching TV.  We looked at each other, wondering why the cops would be here.  “Open up!”  I was the only one brave enough to open the door.  The two policemen violently pushed their way past me and into the house.  They stopped and turned to me.  I started shaking.  I suddenly remembered what Akiran said this morning.  He told me that something was going to happen and that I had to keep him safe.  I got what he meant now.  “Are your parents home?” they asked me.  I looked at them.  I didn’t answer, just walked away into the other room.  I looked around at everybody.  The person that looked the oldest of all of us was Michel, so I sent him out.  While he was distracting the cops, I took Akiran and shoved him into the hallway closet.  He knew why, so he didn’t fight it.  I quickly returned to the living room and sat down.  Michel returned moments later.

“They are looking for a kid.  I think they said his name was Akiran.”  I shook my head to him.  He took the hint and knew what to do.  He walked back to the policemen that were left standing at the front door.  He returned again saying that someone saw him come here with me a few weeks ago.  He also told us that they were going to search the house.  My stomach dropped.  I ran out into the hall and saw them looking through the hallway closet.  Crap.  I was so scared that they were going to fine him and take him back to that orphanage, but when I saw them move one, I was so relieved.  I followed them upstairs, staying close to Michel.  They started checking every room.  When they came upon my room, they stopped.  We still hadn’t fixed the large hole in the wall.

“What’s this?” one of them asked.  I started laughing.

“Oh, that?  It’s nothing.  This house is so old, I’m surprised it’s still standing.”  I tried to make that convincing, but I don’t think it worked.

“You shouldn’t be living here if this place is going to fall apart.  You could get hurt.”  This was when Jason stepped in.

“Please, sirs.  This house is just fine.  There is no need for such alarm.  This is my parents house, and I a child was hiding here, then I would’ve known about it because there isn’t really many hiding places.  If we find this child, we will inform you.”  His voice was so stern.  I hadn’t heard it in so long.  I kind of missed it.  The two policemen stared at Jason for a while and walked out of the room.  “Good day, gentlemen.”  The two men nodded and walked downstairs.  Michel followed them.  Me, on the other hand, stayed behind.  I tried to say something to Jason, but when I turned to him, he was gone.  I trotted over to his room and found him sitting on his bed with Akiran.  “Why didn’t you tell us about this?”  He was to me.  “This could’ve helped.”

“You don’t understand.  I’m just trying to protect him.”  Jason never looked up at me.  I stood motionless in the door way.

          “This could help us.”

“Help you, you mean.  And besides, if anyone knew that he saw what he did, then it would just be putting him in danger.”

“Bringing him here it putting him in danger.”  Jason’s voice rose, but not enough for the others to hear.  But, just to be safe, I entered his room, closing and locking the door behind me.

We sat in silence for a while.  I stared at Jason, who wasn’t even looking at me, as I was leaning against the door.

“Silvia, I’m sorry.  I know you didn’t want me to tell, and I didn’t.  He forced it out of me.  He knew that there was a reason you brought me back.  He knew that you wouldn’t just do this for any human.”  I raised my hand to quiet him.  This wasn’t his argument.

“Why would you do this?” Jason asked, his voice slightly lower than before.  “Why didn’t you tell me.”

“Tell you?  Why the hell would I tell you?  Like I said, if anyone knew, then that would put him in danger.  I thought that bringing him here would help.  I didn’t think that you would go stick your nose into it.  What could we use him for anyway, huh?  This isn’t his fight.  I just want him to be safe so that the vampires or demons find him and try to use him.  If we use him, then they will know that something’s up and come looking.”  Jason didn’t say anything.  I closed my eyes and tried to think of something else to say.  “Akiran?  Go downstairs.  Don’t tell anyone what is going on.  I’ll be back down later.”  He obeyed.  I moved out of his way and let him leave the room.  Jason tried to stop him, but I stepped in.  “Listen here.  You will not put him in harms way while I’m here, do you understand?  He is not going to help us.  Besides, I think it’s hard enough watching him cry every morning because of what he sees, I don’t want to have to go through with him dying because of it.”  Jason was still quiet.  “What is wrong with you?”  He didn’t answer.  “Damn it, answer m-“  I was immediately shut up my something soft pressing against my lips.  I felt two hands on the side of my face pulling my closer.  My breath caught in my chest.  What is he doing?

“What do you think?” he asked, pulling away.  I couldn’t breath.  His eyes moved up and down my body.  I started to shake in his arms.  He thought that I was about to hurt him again, so he backed off and sat on his bed.  I stepped over and stood in front of him.  He looked deep in my eyes.  Why did you stop?  He smiled and pulled me onto the bed next to him.
