The new tunnel they traveled was darker than the last. One of the twins, probably the one that Brooke saved from the barguest, was carrying her on their back. That way she wouldn’t mess her leg up anymore. At least that’s what they told her. The real reason was so that if they get attacked again, they could run faster.
The young girl left them and went back to her dark little house. She left after they got away from the quintapeds and she showed them the way to go. She was supposed to fix Brooke’s leg, but the twin wouldn’t let her. They said that they would rather carry Brooke instead of waiting for her leg to heal, even though it would’ve only taken a few minutes. They said that it would be faster if they just took her to the Fair One first. Brooke could just get her leg fixed there.
The new tunnel they traveled was much shorter. Brooke was sure that the other truly had no end. Or, did it? No one ever made it due to the quintapeds. But, why they didn’t attack Brooke and the others was still a mystery.
The end of the pitch black tunnel came quick. Brooke shut her eyes from the pain of the bright light. The hands wrapped around her thighs tightened. Brooke looked over at the twin that wasn’t carrying her. He looked upset. She shifted her eyes over to the twin under her. His expression matched his brother’s.
“Are you two okay?” Brooke asked. The twins snapped out of their thoughts and looked at her concerned eyes. “You two look upset.” They turned their heads back and continued walking.
“The Fair One doesn’t exactly like us.” the one walking next to her said.
“So, bringing you here will get us into trouble. This may be the last time we see you.” the other informed her.
“So why are you doing this if it’s going to get you two in trouble?” Brooke asked. The twins didn’t answer for a while.
“Because…” the one next to her started. It fell silent again.
“…Because…” the twin carrying her continued. “…Because we…” He was having a hard time saying what he wanted to. “…We…because we…”
“Because you what?” Brooke asked. “What is it?” Her voice was low and sweet. She started to feel something wet hit her hands and arms. She looked over at him. He was starting to cry.
“Because…because we…because we…we...” he stuttered. “…We don’t want to see you hurt…” He trailed off. Brooke knew there was more, but instead of asking, she smiled.
“Thank you, both of you. I’m really happy that you two care for me, even though we pretty much just met.” Brooke laughed. “Plus, I think Roxxanne would love you guys.”
“Who’s Roxxanne?” the twins asked.
“Oh, she’s my best-friend-practically-sister. We’ve known each other for, like, ten or so years. I don’t remember, but I know it’s a long time.” Brooke explained. The twins nodded. “But…” she continued. “I’m not quite sure if I want to talk to her again.” Her voice was low, practically a whisper, so that the twins wouldn’t hear her. She wrapped her arms tighter around the twin’s neck and rested her chin on his shoulder. “Hey, guys?” she asked, breaking the silence. “Why do you care for me so much? We barely know each other, and yet you are willing to do anything to protect me.” The twins looked at each other.
