The Chronicles of Kitirr:

The Dark Sage.

Prologue: The Prophesy

The room was dark, save for a solitary candle burning on a plain wooden desk. The smell of mould penetrated the gloom and made their work stuffy and uncomfortable. But Phoenix cared little for the lack of light or the smell of old books as she searched the shelves with her hands. Being blind had its perks. She didn't need light to go about her business. It was there solely for the benefit of her companion.

A quest was the only way to get the reclusive Ruby away from his meditating and praying. It was always impressive when the leader of a spiritual movement practiced what he taught, but the man did it to the exclusion of all else. Phoenix, on the other hand was the polar opposite. She was impulsive and liked spontaneity. Though at the moment she didn't need eyes or magic to know that the man was now bent over the desk examining a scroll filled with prophesies.

As Tripasts, it was their duty to ensure the spiritual growth of the city that they were assigned to. But their other duties included: helping those in need, healing the injured, going on quests for truth, and sometimes even archeological expeditions for magic artifacts. Ruby was a renowned scholar and mage before he became a Tripast. Phoenix had been raised in the lifestyle of the Tripasts. But now, they had been asked to look up a prophecy that was kept in the vault under the Kersk Temple. This particular one, they had been told, was going to come to fruition very soon and they would need to prepare.

"Have you found it yet?" she called behind her. She got silence as an answer and continued searching the shelves using magic to read the titles of books and their descriptions. Books flew past her fingers with titles like "Prophesies of the New Age," "Prophesies of the Sun," "Prophesies of Tripast Aqualan, Year 2163," and others by this Tripast. Finally, her left hand landed on a particular book: "Prophesies of Tripast Aqualan, Year 2234." A tingle ran up her arm, this was many of the books of prophesy that were kept here, but now the magic was telling her that this was the book that she was looking for.

Quickly, she pulled it from the shelf and closed her eyes as she began flipping through pages. Something in the pages, a series of words, caught her attention 'from a world utterly unlike ours in social structure and appearance.' She giggled as she had not done in many years and ran down the aisle, carrying the book as if it were something precious. At the end of the row, she turned right and ran toward the desk, her excitement clouding her senses. She almost ran into the chair that Ruby was sitting in before she stopped.

"Do you mind, Phoenix?" he snapped.

"Sorry, I was so excited! Look here!" she said as she flipped the book open and waved her hand over the pages, letting the magic move them to the correct page. She set the book down in front of her stoic friend and stood back as he read the passage out loud.

"'They shall come, two Tripasts from a world utterly unlike ours in social structure and appearance. One shall bear powers of an amber stone and a violet stone, the other of a sanguine stone and of onyx. Their choices shall affect many, one will touch the darkness and return, the other shall be consumed by it. They shall discover the path of their destiny one hundred and twenty years from this date written on the twelfth day of the month of Aberdine in the year 2234 of the sun.' And it is signed by the Tripast Aqualan. Jade's memory of this prophesy hasn't failed in one hundred twenty years. He was right, and now we must prepare."

Author’s Note: I must dedicate this chapter to my biggest fan, my mother. She has been my primary beta reader, but now, I find that I need a larger audience of beta readers who also love the same kind of stories that I do. Please feel free to leave constructive criticism and helpful comments. All flames will be converted to magical energy and will be used by the Dark Sage to win against the good guys.
