I smiled and rested my head on Rykers chest as I let everything sink in. I was officially a Dark Sider. I'd had to go through a hell of a lot to get there but I was one. Now Ryker and I were equals, the same and wouldn't have to fear being together. Or so I thought.
"So you're really a Dark Sider now?" Beylie whispered.
I looked away from Ryker and nodded. "Yes."
I saw tears fill her eyes and she quickly looked away from me. "I can't room with a Dark Sider. I want you out."
I was stunned; she couldn't just kick me out. Could she? "Beylie, w-what do you mean you want me out?"
"I want you out of my room! I want you out now! If you're just going to be like him I want you out of here! Pack your things and leave. I don't care where you go just so long as it's out of here."
"Beylie..." Ryker spoke up. "Don't you think you're being a little unreasonable?"
She turned her hate-filled glare to him. "And you, get out. I don't want you anywhere near me every again. Do you understand?"
"Do you fucking understand me?"
Ryker sighed and stood up. "I'll be outside, Min." he walked out. I stood and walked to Beylie so we were face to face, so close our noses almost touched.
"Beylie I don't know what the hell your problem is but you need to get over it. Ryker is not a bad guy, you're just making judgements. You're assuming because he's a Dark Sider that he's a demon or something. Now you're doing it to me!" I crossed my arms over my chest, hoping she'd get how pissed I was about this.
"You're two seconds away from being slapped." Beylie spit between her teeth.
"You wouldn't dare."
She brought her hand up and started to swing it toward my face but stopped midway. She balled her hand into a fist and dropped it with a sigh. Not a sigh of anger, a sigh of disappointment. "Just go, okay? I'll have someone send your stuff to your new room."
"Fine." I stepped past her and headed to the door. Before leaving I turned back to her. "I just hope you remember that you were my first friend here. And friends don't do this to one another." I pulled the door open and walked out. As promised, Ryker stood outside the door waiting for me. He wrapped his arms around me and held me close to him.
"Are you all right Min?" He asked, rubbing his hands lovingly up and down my back.
"Yeah I'm fine. I just need to go see Mrs. White about a new room." I looked down at my pajamas and sighed. "I guess I should've gotten dressed before I came out."
"At least you don't have a huge blood stain on your shirt." He smirked at me and I elbowed him in the stomach. "And this was my favorite shirt!" He tried to sound sad but he just ended up chuckling.
I laughed and kissed his cheek. "Want to come with me to see Mrs. White?"
"Anything for you, my love."
"Well Min, there are just no other available rooms in the dorm. You'll just have to continue to live with Ms. Knox." Mrs. White told me as I sat in her office.
"I would bu Beylie doesn't want me." I sighed and looked over at Ryker for help. He shrugged. Helpful.
"She doesn't want you? Why?" Mrs. White asked, a concerned look in her eyes.
"Because I'm a Dark Sider now and she says she won't room with someone like me."
"Ah. I see." Her eyes glanced over at Ryker. "Is that how you got the blood on your shirt, Mr. Daae?"
He nodded. "It doesn't usually happen like that though."
I looked back and forth between them. They were so weird around each other. Like they knew more about one another than they should. Or like they had been long time friends who shared secrets daily. But that had to be impossible, Ryker was seventeen and Mrs. White was... I wasn't even sure how old she was. I cleared my throst and leaned forward, "I still need a place to live."
Mrs. White turned back to her computer and looked over the list of students and rooms. "I'm sorry, Ms. Monroe. There's just no other place to put you."
"She can room with me." Ryker said. I looked over at him and smiled.
"You know the rules, Mr. Daae. Boys and girls are not allowed to share rooms. As the old saying goes, we have blue and red, we are not going to make purple."
I choked back my laughter at that. That was exactly how my mom used to explain sex to me. She'd tell me that if I was painted red and I mixed with a man who was painted blue we would make purple and I wasn't allowed to make purple until I was married and settled down.
"Come on Gill." Ryker begged, calling Mrs. White by her first name. And not her full first name even, her nickname. "You know what we have to do to become Dark Siders. We've already 'made purple'. And either way, you know me, you know I wouldn't do that in the dorms."
Mrs. White rolled her eyes and laughed. "You shouldn't be doing it anywhere on campus Ryker."
Ryker grinned. "Oops."
"All right. Min you can live with Ryker." I smiled and hugged him. This was going to be great. "But!" Mrs. White stopped our joy. "I have a rule for you. No sex of any kind or Min will be sent back to live with Beylie. Got it?"
Ryker nodded. "Thank you Gill."
She nodded. "You're welcome. Min, I presume you'll need someone to transfer your stuff to Rykers room?"
"Yeah that would be awesome."
"Okay I'll have it sent over. It should be there by the time you get there."
Ryker and I stood up. "Thank you so much Mrs. White. This really means a lot." I gushed.
"You're very welcome dear. Oh and tell your mom hi for me when you talk to her next."
I reached for Rykers hand but he pulled it away then picked me up and carried me out of the office. I giggled and kissed his cheek. "What are you doing?"
"Your socks aren't going to make very good protection walking across the campus, now are they?"
"No I guess they won't." I'd completely forgotten I was still in my pajamas since I didn't get to change before I left my old room. i guess it was good Ryker remembered. Which reminded me... "Ryker why did you call Mrs. White by her first name?"
He hesitated and looked away from me, trying to avoid eye contact. "My parents know her. She's an old family friend."
He didn't sound so sure about that but I didn't push it. It seemed to me that he wasn't going to reveal much of his past to anyone. The bad thing with that? I wanted to know. I wanted to know how in high school, my mom knew a Ryker Daae that looked exactly like this Ryker just with longer hair. Why he really called Mrs. White by her first name. What happened to him that made him who he was now. What made him so sheltered with himself and his past.
I wanted to break through his walls he'd built up around himself.
We reached the boys dorm and he set me down on my feet. Pretty much every guys eyes in the room shot up to stare at me as I walked toward the stares. At least until they saw Ryker, then their eyes quickly fell to the floor. Ryker just rolled his eyes and led me up the stairs to the top floor of the dorm.
"You know they're down there whispering now, right?" I asked, looked over my shoulder at him.
"Who cares?" He led me down the hall toward his room. I walked with him until I heard familiar voices coming behind us. I looked back and saw Alec and Luca walking down the hall toward us.
"Fuck." I looked around for a place to hide and saw several good places - the hall looked like a forest to me - but the places that i saw to hide me were most likely clear as day to Alec and Luca.
"What is it?" Ryker asked, noticing the panic on my face.
"Alec and Luca. You didn't tell me they lived up on this floor."
"I don't even know who they are."
Shit. I turned and found them standing right behind me. "Oh hey guys."
"What are you doing up here? Girls aren't allowed in this dorm except for the main room downstairs." Alec told me matter-of-fact like.
"I know. I was just checking out out. Nice dorm you got here."
"It's exactly like yours only filled with dudes." Alec said. Luca chuckled. I giggled nervously and twirled my hair around my finger.
"She's moving in with me." Ryker's voice made me jump at the unexpectedness of it being there. I didn't think he would speak up. The smiles practically fell off Alec and Luca's faces when they noticed Ryker.
Alec looked back and forth between us. "What about Beylie?"
"She kicked me out. Look, ask her about it. I want to change out of these clothes. I'll see you later."
I walked away from them and continued down the hall, walking right past Ryker's room. He grabbed my arm and pulled me back then pushed the door open. My mouth fell open at what lay before me, just beyond the doorway.
