The Shapeshifters

Novel By: FantasyIcefeather
Fantasy

The year is 2257. The whole of the earth has been joined under one government: The Hunters. Why hunters, you ask? There are a new species of humans called Homo Shiftus. Also known as Shapeshifters by the public. These are a new breed of human, which, in 2152, began to exhibit special powers. Why? One word: wars. This species was created by the natural order due to the ongoing wars. Bombs, guns, napalm, it all shaped it. Modern science distilled the DNA and accelerated the process by over 1,000 years. These new creatures were able to turn into an animal. Fox here, owl there. They could also heal exceptionally fast, some having the power to even regenerate limbs. They were so amazing and so loved, being powerful enough to perhaps rule the world. Soon, the many governments of the world began to panic. They were paranoid that the creatures would overthrow them. They began to visit major cities, spreading the word that Shapeshifters were evil. Some listened, some didn't. Those who believed that they were evil became hunters. Their original code was: If you are certain they are a Shapeshifter, shoot to kill. If you think they might be Shapeshifters, tranquilize or wound them. However, by this code, too many got away. One very ambitious hunter by the name of Derek spoke out. He said that they should kill, wether they know or suspected. Now, only about 10,000 Shapeshifters remain. This is the story of Blizzard, an average girl who decided to fight back. Well, average as far as she knows. View table of contents...

Chapter 2: Mike

Blizzard turned back into a human and slowly approached the bunny. It looked up and slightly backed away.

“I'm not gonna hurt you, little guy...” she said as nicely as she could. Anchoring her feet in the ground, she quickly grabbed the bunny. It began to breathe, faster, faster, pop! The little popping noise seemed to come from the bunny, and it went limp in Blizzard's hands.

“Oh, my god...” she said, but the bunny just jumped back up like nothing had happened.

“Ha! I tricked you!” said the bunny teasingly.

“Are you a shapeshifter, too?” asked Blizzard. She felt like an idiot. Talking to a rabbit.

“Yep! I'm Mike!” squeaked the bunny. Blizzard sighed. This was going to be a long night.

“Mike, can you become a human, please?” she put Mike down, and his form grew into that of an eight year old boy. He had somewhat overgrown, mousy brown hair and hazel eyes. His skin was the color of somewhat darkened cream. The clothes he was wearing were patchy and dulled. Blizzard smiled. What a cute little boy.

“Mike has lived here my whole life. Mike can even remember the fox shifter that lived in that den.” he said, pointing at Blizzard's home. Blizzard smiled at the boy. He might be of some help.

“So, Mike, do you want something to eat while I look for someone?” Mike looked up excitedly.

“Mike wants a cookie. Can Mike have one?” asked the boy. Blizzard gave him a cookie and he nibbled it quickly, like a rabbit. Blizzard ran out in to the forest and looked around.

“Melissa?” the girl dropped down from a random branch.

“What?” she asked sleepily.

“It just occurred to me. Why aren't we fighting back? I mean, these hunters push us around enough.” she pointed at the small bullet mark in her arm. Her wolf ears flattened.

“I'm just a mockingbird, Blizzy. I can't fight back.” Melissa said in an emotionless voice.

“You could be of some help, Melissa. Honest, have you ever taken a good look at yourself? You could get right past security with that weird stalking ability of yours. I mean, I didn't even smell you before you got here!” Blizzard barked with increasing intensity. Suddenly, her ears pricked.

“I have a friend that could help me, Melissa! Have you ever met him? I think he can turn into a condor or something.” Melissa smiled.

“I think I know where he lives.”
