The door was easy to pick, just as Mickey said. It swung open to a fairly nice apartment. Moderate kitchen, with barstool seated countertops. The living room was a good size too.Pretty pricey furniture I snorted, surely they can afford a few missing pieces.I closed the door behind me and got to work.It only took five minutes to find something of my worth, a drawer under the TV held a case of assorted Casio vintage watches.I slipped them into my bag and stood up.
"You know, if you were going to break in, using the spare key under the 'Welcome' mat would've been much easier" I almost jumped, whipping around to a wild haired man now standing in the kitchen. Why hadn't I heard him walk in? He was covered in tattoos, calmly standing there shirtless with pajama pants.I would assume he'd just gotten out of bed if it wasn't for steaming white mug in his hand. I didn't answer, just stared. My heart thumped in my chest. No one was supposed to be home. Shrugging, he took a sip of what smelled to be coffee.
"Your wondering what now right? Good question." his voice sliced into the silence "I don't like police either.Since you were wondering that too"
He seemed to be babbling, disorientated as he peered into his cup. I realized he was thinking, a clear opportunity for my escape.Closest option is the fire escape to my right, I glanced over to it, It was closed. I could easily open it and jump out, but if it is locked it would've been a waste of time. There was another window to my far left, but with no fire escape it wouldn't do me any justice.I'd have to jump. Possible, yes, although it'd be difficult to explain to the officers on a stakeout in that alleyway why I jumped from a 6TH floor window in the first place. Not to mention how my broken leg managed to re-fixate and heal itself before they managed to call an ambulance.Too much risk for just watches. I glanced up, half-expecting the stranger to still be lost in his cup. To my surprise, he was staring at me. He frowned.
"I was quite serious, police are a hassle. I'd rather just let you take them.I'm Broden, Broden Manning" Brodens' eyes stayed fixated on me as he slipped on to the nearest countertop barstool.
"Am I supposed to give an introduction as well?" I asked stalling for time. I could hear the officers as they backed out of the alley. Apparently there was a robbery a few blocks away and they were needed. How ironic. That left window seemed awfully possible right now.
"It's the least you can do after picking my lock and stealing my watches, right?" Another sip.
"I don't trust you," It was the truth.
"Says the one robbing MY apartment," This time he quickly realized I wasn't going to answer and continued "Theres a fire escape in the other room by the desk. Use it and go home, it's a little late for someone like you to be out stealing"
I ignored his comment. If he only knew. I was the most dangerous thing out tonight. I blinked.Wait, come again?
"Why are you letting me go?" My voice played her role perfectly, giving off more shock than suspicion.
"I'm grateful you didn't try to steal the TV," He chuckled, mostly to himself.
"Your welcome?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Actually, it's Thursday, so my girlfriend will be here by 10. That's too soon for comfort.I really don't feel like explaining why there's a female in ripped see-through spandex in the living room"
"They aren't see through" I held back the urge to look.
"They in fact are, nice thong, who knew thieves," He gave me a look "Were so attractive in polka dots"
I yanked my shirt down and shot him a dirty look. Broden threw up his hands innocently, but smirked. Was he flirting with me?? I walked into the hallway, he didn't seem to be lying.
"By the desk?" I asked looking back to make sure he wasn't trying to pull anything. He hadn't moved.
"Weren't you listening Polka Dots?" He glanced at his watch "Five minutes to 10. I hope you climb fast"
I shot him another dirty look, walking into what had to be a bedroom. He wasn't lying, the fire escape was right there, by a mahogany desk. I opened the window, slipping out easily. Ran down two flights then jumped to the ground. Brodens' doorbell rang. My eyes drifted to his window, now closed and reflecting the moon. The moon will peak soon, if I don't get home I'll change where-ever I'm standing and kill anything within a 50-block radius of my claws. I ran.
