A/N : Hi guys- just wanted to let you know that this is
the penultimate chapter >.<</strong>
Thanks for all your support =) Also... this
chapter really didn't turn out how Iwas planning it. But
Iguess Igot carried away- so it should be quite unepected. Well I
hope so anway =) Thanks for reading!
The island was sinking at a more speedy rate now, and my flicker
of hope was fading slightly as everyone realised that we didn't
really have much of a chance of fighting in the water. Though
many of us were strong swimmers, obviously we could not out-swim
hungry sharks and merpeople who spent their lives swimming.
We needed to fly, or build an unbreakable boat, or hitch a lift.
An idea shot through me like a lightning bolt, making me jump. I
lifted my arms and, turning to the sea, I let out a long cry,
turning it into a series of clicks and squeaks. The Atlanteans
stared at me in shock, but I ignored them for the time being. For
now, they could think I hadgone mad, I was just praying that it
would work. The other spirits on the island caught on, and joined
me, until, united, the sound rose up into the air, ear
And then they came. Dolphins. They swam in a pyramid formation,
and there must have been at least fifty- for it seemed never
ending as they swerved to a halt just before us.
I clapped with joy, and immediately told them what was the
problem. They were soexcited at the prospect of an adventure that
they offered us all a lift immeadiately. Several turned loops and
flipped in the air.
I instructed everyone to climb on, and they did- some with
frightened reluctance, others with desperate enthusiasm. The
dolphinsoff away straight away, heading to the right of the group
of sharks. Shouts from the merpeople signified that they had
noticed and were heading after us. I hurried everybody onto the
dolphins, children and their mothers first, then the teenagers. I
tried to make Solo get on, but he put an arm around my waist and
shook his head.
I had no time to argue so I shrugged and let him stay. It was
nice having him hold me, anyway.
The sharks had come and mingled with the dolphins now. I saw it
happening before it did. Somebody too eager, a man named Fengari,
mistook the shining back of a sharkfora dolphin, and climbed on.
The water around him turned red as he was devoured.
I felt sick, but I had no time to mourn him, not yet. More and
more people were packed onto dolphins, and we sent them off, an
army of them. It seemed to be working. Finally, it was only Solo
and I left, and one dolphin. We climbed on, and he swam
powerfully away, his tail slamming down into the water. The
sharks had followed us, as had the merpeople. I saw them
surrounding the others, but the brave dolphins carried on. The
Atlanteans were hitting and kicking at them too, and I saw at
least one dead shark float past, as well as the body of Zander,
Zeth's brother who had laughed at me when I was locked up.
Solo trembled, and I felt the same. This was suddenly very real.
A dolphin fell, and with it an elderly woman, who was torn apart
before she hit the water. People were losing limbs to the
snapping teeth, and screams filled the air.
Our dolphin was lagging behind with two of us to carry, and I saw
a shark powerfully thrashing up behind us.
"Tuck in your legs!" I shouted to Solo, and he did, terror in his
I reached into myself, to that spot I had found when I had
destroyed the wall, and pushed hard fury at the shark. With a
moan, it fell, and doing this wrenched at my gut.
"Ouch!" I cried, feeling drained as I was forced to destroy
another shark. Each shot of power caused my insides to wrench
with pain, and my body to become weaker and weaker. Two more
sharks were dead. A mermaid, her eyes full of hungry evil, I had
to kill as she tried to pull a baby from its mothers arms. This
was the stuff of nightmares.
I felt as if I would faint, and Solo gripping onto me was the
only reason I was still moving with the dolphin. The creature we
rode suddenly wailed in pain, and glancing back, I saw a shark
biting fiercely down on it's tail. I attempted a bolt, but all
that came out was a feeble, wobbly streak.
Someone broke the water, and I saw Solo's feet kick out at it.
No.Zeth had returned to watch me die.
I raised my hazy eyes and looked at him. I must have been
hallucinating, for his eyes were full of guilt and sadness. He
swam alongside us, and then, reaching for the shark, he ordered
it off, and pulled the dolphin to a stop. He was going to finish
us off himself. The dolphin was still squeaking in pain, and Zeth
pulled a knife out from his side.
I watched him, not feeling anything. We were going to die.
"Sorry, Solo, I'm so sorry." I forced out, weakly.
"No! Don't apologise, oreoss," he replied, soothingly.
Zeth curved his tail up in the air, and with a swiping of his
knife… cut it off?
His face wrenched in pain as I stared in disbelief. Black blood
poured from the tail, as he pressed it down over the mutilated
tail of the dolphin. Shimmering water covered it, and the tails
merged together. Okay, I was definitely hallucinating.
"What?" I gasped.
"I'm sorry, Airla. I'm sorry we did this to you, and to your
island." Zeth couldn't speak properly though the pain. He patted
the dolphin to make it swim away, and it powered off, going even
faster with Zeth's tail. Glancing back, I saw the glint of a
silver knife as Zeth plunged it into his chest.
My head spun, and I fainted into Solo's arms.
